Coaching Changes

I thought Spiker withdrew candidacy?

Army is a tough place to win, so smart move if he gets hired.

I'm wondering if mid-major fans have the same expectations as fans like us. Do they get mad because he might not be a household name?

It was reported, but there is so much bad information out there during coaching change & transfer times.

Latest in UNLV coaching search:
Cinn. coach, Mick Cronin, left town without accepting offer of over two million.
Search is being conducted by the UNLV president, the lame-duck AD, and an unnamed donor.
Media and fan reaction to Cronin was overwhelmingly negative.
Apparently, school is only interested in those who have had previous head coaching experience, and Steve
Lavin's name is coming up quite often, in media, along with New Mexico St. coach, Marvin Menzies.

Chris Obekpa vote could put Lav over top. :)

With Cronin seemingly out, Lavin's name seems to be next on the list for UNLV.

lot's of smoke signals from Obekpa

I never thought much of Cronin, but he does seem to be in the big dance a lot. Lavin will be more of the same of what they just fired.

Per Zagoria

Iona's Jared Grasso & Stony Brook's Jay Young are among the finalists at CCSU, sources say. Grasso has been a strong recruiter at Iona.

Yes, but Lavin's recruiting ground is the West Coast and it will be a lot easier for him to convince West Coast kids to go to Las Vegas than to come to New York City. Lavin, in the end, just wasn't the right guy for St. Johns.

Lavin got quality guys from all over the country to come to St. Johns. He just couldn't coach them. The players he'd bring to Las Vegas would be no better than what he had here. His only chance at success would be to get some high quality X&Os tactician who will actually stick around longer than what Dunlap did here.

FWIW, and just one example, but friends of mine are friends with Parker Jackson-Cartwright's parents. They said they were told if Lav was at a western school PJC would have played for him so in isolated incidents it won't hurt to be at UNLV with west coast kids. Also FWIW UNLV has about the same national image as STJ, once proud national power, albeit in a weaker conference.

just as people speculated that Hurley would come here, this seems to be nonsense. Doubt Lavin would be interested.

As per Jon Rothstein, Tulane has a verbal agreement in place to hire Mike Dunleavy Sr. as its next head coach

WOW!!

Whoa...whats the connection? Figure he could gt a much bigger college job than that if he wanted it...?

He’s the brother-in-law of Sugar Bowl committee member Miles Clements, who played football for the Green Wave from 1973-75.

Not sure how much of a connection that is, but it's something.

I think Lavin is very interested in UNLV

Latest news - Marvin Menzies flying into Vegas tonight for interview and is very interested in the job. Lavin might be the next up, if Menzies doesn't get it. St. Mary's coach also may be an option.
Cronin actually said he would accept position yesterday, but asked for a few hours to work some things out. UNLV found out he was staying at Cincinnati when ESPN announced it this morning, Cronin never bothered to inform UNLV. Classy guy.

It's about as good a job as Lavin can get. I would bet he is very interested!
