Coaching Carousel

I was in school during the Mulzoff era
He had been a high school coach in Suffolk County
Mulzoff had tremendous talent, including two future pros (Davis and Schaefer)
He did a lousy job IMO
Don't let the record fool you - there was no Big East Conference in those days
We didn't play the same strength of schedule as we did later on (more cupcakes)
There was no controversy when Looie wanted to come back
People were glad to see Mulzoff leave

Mulzoff probably was not a good choice to begin with, but he handicapped himself further with the assistants he chose. Inherited great frontcourt talent, but average guards. His record was solid, but he was not popular with the players, and his recruiting was headed downhill. His best recruits were Frank Alagia, Beaver Smith and Mel Utley.
In part, because of the way the Mulzoff era played out, The administration decided not to hire a St. John's guy for Louie's second assistant, and subsequently chose Brian Mahoney over Pete LaMantia, a former SJU guard and captain. Another "what if" for fans to contemplate.

Evidently, the administration wasn't THAT down on Mulzoff when he left. According to this, he turned down a two year contract extension when he left.

Louie probably approached the administration after all this went down, not before.

Now, many of the fans that I've gotten to know, who were around during that era, do not speak highly of him, as a coach or person (I wouldn't know, because I was still about a decade away from being born). But, it's pretty clear the powers that be were willing to bring him back.

You know, the whole sequence of events was never fully explained. Only Louie, Mulzoff and Jack Kaiser truly know, and there wasn't much discussion about the sudden turn of events. Most were happy with the outcome. I do remember Louie got rid of most of Mulzoff's incoming recruiting class, and came up with Glen Williams, as a late recruit.

And the next year he had Ed Searcy. Can you imagine Killer and Ed as bookend forwards. We would have gotten every rebound. Would have happened save for Killer's knee injury.

Problem with Ed Searcy was that he was not in shape. He was able to get up and down the court about 3 times and then he would suck wind. Guy could jump higher than everyone on the court.

The bottom line is Looie was being booed off the court at the Nassau Coliseum when his team flopped in his last season...and the next year he was back at St John's. Draw your own conclusions..

I remember reading that Searcy had to wear 6 pairs of socks to cushion the blow when he landed after jumping for a rebound

He was a monster but did little to nothing on the offensive end

Looie is "THE MAN" these days
But lots of people didn't think he was a great coach during his time at St John's
Many had issues with him running set offenses when city kids like to run and gun
Many felt we would have gotten better recruits had we been more of a running team
Looie used to joke that his recruiting budget was a bag full of tokens

Arizona State has offered Jeff Capel its coaching vacancy following the firing of Herb Sendek, sources told ESPN.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...arizona-state-sun-devils-men-basketball-coach

Are we going to add Sendek to our list of candidates?

Anyone who has previously been fired should not be considered. If we don't learn from our past mistakes, we are doomed to repeat them.

People are scared of up-and-comers because of the disaster that was Norm. Norm was not an up-and-comer. He was an unqualified disaster at QC.

Looie is a great example of how a personality can be so important in coaching. Every fan and media personnel loved him. It would take forever to find an article critizing him. Even after fighting to keep SJU out of the BigEast so SJU could continue its soft schedule he was left untouched.

And Dave Leitao and Tommy Amaker and Karl Hobbs and . . . . the list goes on and on and on.

This is a crap shoot no matter how you look at it because STJ is not able to compete with the top programs for qualified candidates. If Miller or Marshall or Smart or Jacobson or Larry Eustachy or Randy Bennett or Steve Prohm were open to at least taking a call I'd feel a lot more comfortable than the inexperienced local candidates most are fawning over.

Hmm, interesting. I'm not sure anyone can win at Fordham until that team leaves the A10, but maybe Brown will surprise me (if he takes the job). He's certainly done a great job at Albany.

@NYPost_Brazille

Albany coach Will Brown interviewed for Fordham opening today, per sources.

I don't get all the love for this guy. He has had as many bad seasons as iOS (including back to back losing seasons). I was unimpressed watching them in their league championship. It seems like he is at he right level.

Bobby front runner for DePaul per Jeff Goodman

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...er-depaul-blue-demons-job?src=mobile&rand=ref~%7B%22ref%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FN9Z2nlswxM%22%7D

Yet another reason to get him now. Depaul will be dancing in two years if he gets that gig.

I have to believe SJU is a better job than DePaul. As Paultzman's avatar would suggest, we really need to get off the pot (insert Obekpa joke here).

I'd bet he'd take the Depaul job ahead of ours if given the choice. New arena on the way and he'd inherit a much better roster. Plus we are planning on "going cheap."

The new arena isn't set in stone yet
