Coaching Carousel

After posting how I liked Mulzoff's style of bb I just checked his results.
83 games
50 games SJU scored at least 80 points
26 in the eighties
13 in the nineties
11 100 or more
We could use Frank now.

No thanks. Results speak for themselves. Past settling for mediocrity.

Looie left for the opportunity to make much more money .SJU was not paying him very much and pro offer more than tripled his salary. In order not to leave SJU in the hole Looie actually delayed taking the job for a season.
Mulzoff got the job even though he was really an unknown in the coaching profession. I think he coached at a small LI college and been an ass't. coach. He played for SJU about 20 years prior.
When Looie got fired things got sticky. He wanted back, SJU wanted him and fired Mulzoff even though he was certainly not a failure. It was pretty embarrassing so it has been pretty much forgotten in SJU circles.

So he's Tim Cluess before Tim Cluess?

No, his teams played defense.

His third and final season at SJU was my fr yr there and at one point in the season he had us at 17-2 ranked 9th in the country. End of season fizzled out ala Lavin. Remember his team could press full court and come up with steals and run off 14-2 like runs in 2-3 minute stretches.

I was in school during the Mulzoff era
He had been a high school coach in Suffolk County
Mulzoff had tremendous talent, including two future pros (Davis and Schaefer)
He did a lousy job IMO
Don't let the record fool you - there was no Big East Conference in those days
We didn't play the same strength of schedule as we did later on (more cupcakes)
There was no controversy when Looie wanted to come back
People were glad to see Mulzoff leave

Mulzoff stayed away for many years although he made an appearance this year at Basketball Alumni reunion.

Mulzoff probably was not a good choice to begin with, but he handicapped himself further with the assistants he chose. Inherited great frontcourt talent, but average guards. His record was solid, but he was not popular with the players, and his recruiting was headed downhill. His best recruits were Frank Alagia, Beaver Smith and Mel Utley.
In part, because of the way the Mulzoff era played out, The administration decided not to hire a St. John's guy for Louie's second assistant, and subsequently chose Brian Mahoney over Pete LaMantia, a former SJU guard and captain. Another "what if" for fans to contemplate.

They wanted to get more diversity on the staff, thus Mahoney, who had a great playing career at Manhattan, and had played pro ball for a few years. In the past, Louie, Lapchick, and Frank McGuire hired assistants who had gone to SJU.

If I'm not mistaken, the Looie-Mahoney "bromance" started when Brian played for him with the Nets
Another reason why I wished Looie had never left St John's

Evidently, the administration wasn't THAT down on Mulzoff when he left. According to this, he turned down a two year contract extension when he left.

Louie probably approached the administration after all this went down, not before.

Now, many of the fans that I've gotten to know, who were around during that era, do not speak highly of him, as a coach or person (I wouldn't know, because I was still about a decade away from being born). But, it's pretty clear the powers that be were willing to bring him back.

Utley's backcourt mate at St John's was Kevin Cluess
They were often referred to as "Salt and Pepper"

The comment about the assistant coaches was true
If memory serves me correctly, Mulzoff was a History teacher at Connetquot HS
He surrounded himself with other HS guys, like Chuck MacAuley, a real nut job
I did like the loud plaid pants that Chuck often wore on game days

yeah, those pants looked good sitting next to Mulzoff's red socks. ;)
say what you will about Mulzoff, but his teams played exciting ball, scored lots of points, and hit the boards. That second year wasn't so great. He had a monster front line with Killer Davis, Billy Schaeffer, Greg Cluess and Big Billy Phillips, guards ,not so terrific.. If we had someone like Killer,
Schaef or Greg on this years team we would have had something special.

And the next year he had Ed Searcy. Can you imagine Killer and Ed as bookend forwards. We would have gotten every rebound. Would have happened save for Killer's knee injury.

Bill Phillips scored a huge chunk of his career points in a single game against St Francis in 1971
There used to be a trophy given to the MVP of that game each year
The starters only played about half the game because the score was so lopsided
It was Greg Cluess' senior year and he was the captain so they gave him the MVP award
The fans booed, thinking it should have gone to Phillips, his understudy
Based on performance at that game alone, they were right

Hmm, interesting. I'm not sure anyone can win at Fordham until that team leaves the A10, but maybe Brown will surprise me (if he takes the job). He's certainly done a great job at Albany.

@NYPost_Brazille

Albany coach Will Brown interviewed for Fordham opening today, per sources.
