Coaching Carousel

This coaching carousel topic is fine if we're talking about the whole landscape of college hoops. But relating any coaching hirings or firings to St. John's is ridiculous. Like it or not we have a coach and he's not going anywhere this year.

Masiello going to South Florida was a bad choice. There are some places that you just can't win and South Florida seems like one of them. Sure you might make an appearance in the tournament here and there but you're not ever going to be a big time program at South Florida. That being said, he is losing a lot off this year's team and maybe this was his shot to upgrade conferences. Manhattan goes .500 next year and no one is talking about him anymore

+1, that's what I think.
If he's at USF for more than 2 seasons I would be surprised.
Manhattan is going to struggle next season. USF on the other hand lost their last 9 games in a row - and they return everyone but Rudd. All he has to do there is not be the worst team in D1, and it'll be an improvement. If he goes .500 he'll get nominated for COY.
It's gotta be a stepping stone. Pitino and the other people he listens to probably told him their will be better jobs available next seasons.

Before Sampson declared, my expectation was that Lavin would be extended and given a raise. Now, I'm not so sure. This whole move just reeks of something much more dysfunctional going on behind the scenes.

So if SJU had a great year, do you think Sampson wouldn't have left?

Not about SJU as a team having a great year or not. It's about Sampson regressing this year and choosing to jump ship when the draft odds are well stacked against him.

I, for one, was hoping to see Lavin extended to give the program stability and help with the the 2015 recruiting class. But with next year's outlook suddenly changing, and with the BE losing its luster, and with the prospects of getting back to the NCAA tournament maybe three years off at best, I wouldn't be surprised to see Lavin play out his contract and leave. He didn't come here to lose, to further tarnish his reputation as a coach, or to coach a mid-major program.

We are pleased with the progress our basketball program has made. I look forward to being the coach at St. John’s for the long-term. #SJUBB

A cynic might refer to this as Lavinspeak. Only time will tell.

But why would he even bother with those tweets, essentially shilling for his job--especially considering that the tweets came (in my opinion) at a wildly inappropriate time--ie, the day before Marquette game, team still on the Tourney bubble.

My bet is that he wants to lock in another $10 million right now, while he can. He's surely developed some thick skin, courtesy of his UCLA days.

It's all relative because if St. John's had a great year, Sampson would have had to have a great year. So yes I do.

Pitino called Masiello to South Florida a slam dunk last weekend. BC and Wake are better jobs that USF. Sounds to me like Pitino didn't want him in the ACC with him if he could help it.

Lavin would love nothing more than to make another 10 million. Twenty million over ten years is not too shabby. With some good investment planning he should be set for life when the next contract expires at 55. He can choose to live in Soho or Cali and find another hot wife if this one leaves him.

Good point. Pitino didn't want to play Manhattan in the first round. Masiello, supposedly, had a big hand in Louisville's defensive sets, as well as (have his Manhattan team) mimicked the overall play of Louisville.

Saw on Twitter Shaka smart to Marquette. Is it confirmed?

Heard on Sirius/XM that Shaka to Marquette is not likely to happen
They have an interim President and an interim AD
Not a stable situation there at this time

Not a bad move after the weather this winter either. If he can win there he could use it as a stepping stone to a major program.

2nd post ever - ready to take more abuse. Why the hell do you bring Lavin's wife into this? Leave family out. I think Lavin is a great recruiter. And I have to say, as a bench coach he does not impress me. I wish he was great at both. But if I have to choose, I will take great recruiting and wish for the when it comes to coaching.PS- a side note, different topic. JK is no way going in the 1st round.
