Coaching Carousel

i feel dirty saying it too but i would give calhoun a shot.

yep...Calhoun, Howland, I'd even give a serious look at Masiello, but that won't happen at this point. I can't blame any school for passing on Masiello, but eventually over time, he'll be a name in the mix of young talented coaches. He has the skills.

If Lavin leaves, I want Fran back.
I am glad everyone is being rational and no one is going off the deep end. If you are going to ESPN for a coach, why don't you make lawman all warm and fuzzy and pick Seth Greenberg, or go full throttle and go with Bobby Knight.

Pat Knight with Bob as special adviser.

How about giving Larry Brown a chance to come home? Barring that, a Pitino Jr. hiring would be a major coup..

Larry Brown is a HOF coach but, he's 73-74 years old. If he were 63 it's a different story. Pitino Jr would be a great choice, even for 4-5 years. NOT for anything but, if Keady was 10 years younger, I'd grab him in a minute too,.

Not the Lavin Keady who took notes but, the Purdue Keady who would take technical fouls to inspire his team, put his foot up a players a-- after a dumb play and, play in your shorts defense with the occasional knock your opponent on his keester when driving down the lane...
That's the Keady i would want but, not happening.

The names Larry Brown, PJ Carlissimo, Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin, Fran Fraschilla, Bobby Knight and co. should be permanently eliminated from the conversation going forward. Calhoun is at least worthy of discussion for the time being. But the rest?

Calhoun offers the opportunity to leverage the UConn / Final Four buzz --he's been frequently shown/talked about during Tourney.

Larry Brown is much younger than his years. I'm tired of the list of mediocre mid majors and "big time" coaches who wouldn't touch our program, even for two and a half million dollars per if you begged them.

Just shows you don’t have a clue. Marquette hired Wojo, USF hired Antigua, Wake just hired Manning and BC hired Jim Christian. All of these are pretty underwhelming.

If you think SJU would automatically do better simply because your magic powers think it would you are crazy.

Marquette has more money then SJU and spends more on their basketball program than anyone else except Duke and has significantly more success than SJU recently and the best they could do was hire a career assistant. Just ask yourself that.

Take Georgetown when they FINALLY fired Esherick they hired the coach of PRINCETON, granted with ties to the program.

OMG, Jim Calhoun at St JOHN'S? I would think his past indiscretions at UCONN and their NCAA suspension would preclude him coming here. No doubt he can Coach but, as a Alum I'm really against him here..
Some schools, HOUSTON, for example, apparently don't give a care to who they hire, i.e Kelvin SAMPSON. Kelvin can get even a pure as the driven snow Program like Indiana in trouble just by showing up with his phone. Jimbo is from much the same cloth but, a little smarter.. Until the end approaches..

This school can't afford to take a chance with the aforementioned. We're too deep in a hole right now. And talk about Hurleys make me want to hurl.

Underwhelming choices? Hardly.. These guys are the hottest names on the market today.. Any one of them would appear on any Search Committees list. HIRING JT3 for the Hoyas was as much DNA as anything.. JT3 earned his own credentials but, without JT2 would it have happened?

Being so down is why we can afford to take a chance. Marquette has a lot to lose, they've been very successful over the last decade and have built up a big national profile. SJU literally has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Although I do understand your pain, you want to see a winner in your lifetime. But I just don't think theres any chance a big name coach is coming here next. Especially since the budget will have to be reduced.

For the record, Marquette turned down Howland in favor of Steve Wojwhatever

Lovell then talked to former UCLA coach Ben Howland, who was Lovell's colleague at the University of Pittsburgh.

"Ben Howland wanted the job," Lovell said. "I talked to my friend, the chancellor at the University of Pittsburgh who ultimately hired him. And I got to talk to Ben. We shared some good memories of some good teams he had there in the early 2000s when I was there."

Marquette put him on hold.

For Manhattan's sake I hope the AD has a new buyout clause added to Masiello's contract which will make Masiello pay about 5 million if he leaves before the end of the contract or he'll be gone next year.

There are much more deserving coaches who now won't get a shot. He's very fortunate because this will be forgotten a lot faster. I'd love to see the "courses" he's taking to finish his 10 credits. Also, remember the statement he made about his mistake nearly costing him the job at an institution that he loves. We'll see how long he loves Manhattan after the next 25-8 season.

Wonder how his players will respond to him coming back, considering he tried to leave and almost did.

I was actually on Masiello's side until I read his weaselly statement. What a tool.

Masiello was always a tool. He was able to hide it while riding the positive waves of a successful season. But once things went off track, his true personality came out.
