Coaching Carousel

No coach has to follow an exact template of a resume before they get a big job. Like anything else, sometimes it just comes down to showing potential to the right people.

Even though Holloway probably won't sniff the UK job, I don't think it is absurd to suggest he would be a good candidate.

With that said, I hope they hire Hurley

Saw on CBS Sports App they mention Pitino as possible Calipari replacement along with Coaches Dan Hurley, Nate Oats, Scott Drew and Billy Donovan.

lol you asked if the Oakland coach should be considered by the “his standard”. Was only pointing out the difference there is worth noting would think.
Because he beat a coach who has more resources. Shaheen beat Calipari in 2022. That is what I meant.

The last 4 coaches hired at UK were:

1)Rick Pitino-Final Four run at Providence after years of PC not even being remotely an NCAA team and in 2 years took them to a tie for 4th in the BE and 6 seed in the NCAAs. Then after the Knicks had missed the playoffs 3 straight years a flagship NBA franchise Pitino comes in and makes it his first year and then wins 52 games and the division in his 2nd year. Then hired by UK to take over a disaster after ironically PJ Carlesimo who did one of the great turnaround jobs ever at SHU turned then down.

2)Tubby Smith. Former Pitino ass't takes over after taking Georgia to the NCAA's 2 years in a row. And before that taking Tulsa to 2 conference championships and 2 straight Sweet 26 appearances.

3)Billy Gillispie-Just took Texas A&M to back to back NCAA's and a 2nd place finish in the Big 12 behind Kansas.

4)John Calipari-Taking Memphis to Final Four in 2008 just finished a stretch of 4 straight 30 win seasons at Memphis that included being seeded in the NCAA's 2006-1 seed, 2007-2 seed, 2008-1 seed 2009-2 seed. And this does not include what he did at UMASS.

And you are going to follow that up with a coach with no conference regular season titles, no Big East Tourney wins and no NCAA wins or appearances outside of 1 year at St. Peter's. Makes perfect sense.

OK.

Trust me the Louisville interest in Shaheen was WAAAY overblown. It was not serious.
It sounded like something from an agent floated to get Sha a contract extension or a commitment of some kind (maybe more $ for ACs). And they landed on a mid-major coach anyway. Louisville was swimming in very, very different waters than Kentucky IMO when it came to filling that job. Honestly I think Louisville is a very good gig but a good amount of its shine is because of how Pitino raised the ceiling there with what he did on the sidelines.

Kentucky will go hard after Hurley. They don’t want a Pitino with 5-6 years left.

Oats, Donovan, Wright…all great options. Holloway probably a year or two early.

What about Pete Gillen, Paul Hewitt, Bobby Cremmins and and Pat Kennedy? Oh wait, wrong program.
You forgot Jim Baron. He is needed on this list. He is always needed on this list.
If you walk down Union Turnpike and close your eyes, you can hear Jim Baron's name echoing from Jamaica Estates to Fresh Meadows.

And the leading candidate Tom Penders and the ever popular PJ Carlesimo.

Jobs like UK , IU and Kansas require a lot of Ass Kissing to a lot of different groups .
The Administration , the Head of the Booster Club , the big Donors , Alumni , Fans , etc

Shaheen is in the right job for him right now . That will change as he continues to win at the BE Level . He will make that leap to the next level where the Elite Coaches hold Court .

Look at IU , they have run thorough a lot of Coaches since Bobby Knight left so most 2 Decades ago

Mike Davis, Tom Crean , Archie Miller and now Mike Woodson . Woodson because he was a popular Alum , had NBA Experience and checked the boxes . He’s struggled to get IU to the level those fans want and demand .
He’s safe for now but, even as popular as he is , the frying pan is heating up .
He got high marks for restoring IU’s connection to Bobby Knight after many years . Knight is the standard that Indiana holds all their Coaches to .

So , a lot of these high profile jobs , especially at the large State Schools , have a lot of folks who have a say in selecting a new Coach .

It’s not easy to get that approval .

All this talk reminds me of the talk about another Seton Hall who went to a final four being a candidate for the opening which wound up going to Pitino.
