Coaching Carousel

Kentucky list might have Hurley right at the top and Sean Miller as a solid backup. Oats? Scott Drew? any of the ex College coaches young enough to have a nice run, Wright or Billy D?

Rick?
Those are some elite Names for sure . And , it’s amazing that Kentucky still has that kind of Brand identity when it hasn’t dominated the College scene for quite a while .
I have trouble seeing Calipari at Arkansas but , just speculating on when / if the UK job opens up , who gets on their list ?
Adding Rick to your last comment isn’t far fetched and while I doubt he’s interested in moving back to Kentucky , it’s never impossible .

Just my opinion but , I believe Pitino is fixated on rebuilding the St John’s program to its highest levels . It would be a capstone of enormous stature to his legacy if he won a NCAA Title here

The Kentucky opening is going to get a handful of guys big raises and NIL bumps.

I think Hurley laughs at them if they even bother to call him.
Scott Drew considers it briefly but turns it down.
Oats already has a massive buyout and I think Alabama will be sure to keep him especially after a final 4 run and losing Saban.

I think their next call is TJ Otzelberger and they make that work. I think he'd crush it there too.

I'm going to be massively wrong on all this.
Why would Hurley leave. He’s won enough where he is so he can continue to be the obnoxious, loudmouth scumbag that he truly is.

I said this after they lost to Oakland a few weeks ago.

I did not think he would be fired. Really hard to fire a coach with that type of resume and who has that type of buyout.

But I did think he would be willing to look elsewhere (I said Louisville and Ohio St should make a call) and "voluntarily" go to another high major job.

Just think it got too toxic for him in Lexington. It takes a different breed of cat to handle that job. It ate up and spit out Tubby and Billy Gillispie barely had a cup of coffee there. Rick and John were probably the best prepared for that type of job.

But man SMU firing Rob Lanier after just 2 years started this chain of events and who would have thought it would lead to Calipari leaving UK.

Oats is the obvious choice for Kentucky.
If he turns them down then their next call should be to either Sean Miller or Billy Donovan - and probably Miller given the catchup Donovan would have to play with the current landscape.
After that I don't know where they go - they'd probably have to do whatever it takes to land Drew.

No I don't think Bill would take it but if you believe you are the best job in CBB you take a stab at the best or certainly one of the 2 or 3 best coaches in the game.

I think they end up with someone like TJ Otzelberger. Just a hunch.

I think it is a good take honestly. Holloway with Kentucky's money and resources probably builds a great team that is hard to beat yearly
I don't doubt that Holloway has that capability... but... this is Kentucky Basketball we are talking about...

This would be Goldman promoting a 3rd year associate to CEO....

If a young all-star type coach were emerging, his/her resume would look like Shaheen Holloway's. What more does the guy have to do? He is already an upgrade to Calipari, who essentially stopped coaching.

No, I was not kidding.
There are a lot of coaches you can make an argument with bigger budgets and more resources could theoretically do what you are saying.

I could list other coaches in the MAC and Missouri Valley etc. So what?

Why is Holloway the only one you seem to think is good enough? And more importantly by that definition if Bill Self went to the NBA are you saying Kansas should take a look at him? Because by that definition he is qualified for that job or any job.

My God can you imagine if Kentucky had not blown an 8 point lead late in round 1 of the NCAAT in 2022. Or if Dawes had not hit a late 3 to put the first round NIT game into OT vs St. Joe's?

I can assure you if UK hired Holloway there would be a riot in Lexington and the AD and Administration would be barred from ever entering the state again.

Kentucky basketball under Calipari got lazy and soft. Hiring someone like Holloway for a change of energy/culture would be smart to me.

Though you're right and I am sure Kentucky won't see him as big enough of a name, all JohnnyFan was saying was what HE would do if he were the Kentucky AD.

I’m a fan of Sha, but he’s been to two NITs in two years for a program that basically lived in the NCAA tourney with Willard for a half decade before he stepped into the gig. And he didn’t exactly light the world on fire in the MAAC.

Good young coach with a great tourney run at SPU, but there are numerous candidates with more accomplished resumes.

Yes and he would be fired before the contract was ever signed.

He would not have the job of UK AD for more than 5 minutes after an agreement was reached.

Again how many mid major coaches could I name that you could theoretically make the argument that with better resources they could do a good job? That is literally dozens of coaches?
