Coaching Carousel

Lol. Quite sure Kentucky would target guys that would stay there 20 years first. Nate Oats would be the first call probably
Agree

"Oh no!" was my first panicked response, followed by "Now what do we do?!?", followed up with, "Wait, KY would want a young coach, not Rick even though he brought them back from the dead.
Now I hope my more 'thoughtful' reaction proves out.

Just the Calipari to Arkansas stuff. Think it might actually happen
Seems odd unless he is just sick of KY or someone is pushing him out. I've always thought Arkansas is the second best job in that league, but Kentucky is like the Yankees, Cowboys, etc.

My question - In the world of NIL and a somewhat evened playing field (everybody openly paying players instead of just the Kansas and Kentucky’s of the world just brazenly doing that under the table more than anybody else) is Calipari really a top 10 coach still? Is he even top 25? I’m not so sure personally.

I think now X’s and O’s guys might be better than recruiters because recruiting is nothing more than offering players a bigger bag than everybody else. As Mike Boynton said there’s no more winning over the parents in their living room or getting the advantage by being at every game a kid plays. So how much are recruiting first guys like Calipari worth these days?

He’s never really overachieved with a less talented team and there have been numerous seasons recently where he’s straight up underachieved. He hasn’t really adjusted to the portal era yet, still relying on 18 year old Freshmen to be his main guys.

If he does leave the first two calls probably go to Oats and Otzelberger. Would be a tough job for either of them to turn down

I bet you he will have great success there. I don’t buy Muss or Pearl (both great) are better coaches. Look what they’ve done at less than Kentucky SEC schools. He won’t need to get exclusively 5 stars and he can get some traction. Good for Cal, I hope he shoves in the Kentucky fans faces to be honest.

I don’t think winning is as easy as getting the best recruiting class on paper. Obviously no one will complain with all 5 stars. And at UK it was his calling card. But can you recruit at or above the level he did at Memphis, with better fit and continuity, at a school like Arkansas and actually have more success? Ceiling might be lower, but not ready to say he can’t do at Arkansas what Mus was able to do.

Yeah I think he’ll be fine at Arkansas but at Kentucky he was on the beneficiary side of a very uneven playing field and still wasn’t dominating. Now that the playing field is leveled a bit I can’t see the argument for him as a top 10-15 coach still but not a hill I’d die on

Do Jersey kids who don't yet seem ready for long NBA careers follow him to Arkansas, or do they do another year of college closer to home?

Bigger question is what impact would this move have on Rick's recruiting goals this year and beyond?

Don't know that impact on Arkansas' roster from Mus's move and he was a very good and active recruiter there.

But not sure in this new $NIL world and the chicken coop of $$$ he'll have.
