Coaching Carousel

The idea that just because something didn’t happen is evidence that there was no smoke to the fire is ridiculous.

Choose to believe what you want to believe. But Tulsa is trying to do this on the cheap and that was not going to work. And I personally never posted that Anderson owed us a statement.

Yeah, Imma go with Panther's level of insight WRT Coach Anderson over what  bunch of folks with an agenda said/created on the interweb.  It's been shown time and again that Twitter is not the real world.

But that's a dead letter so we should leave it that way.

As for the coaching carousel, I think Willard has built a very solid program at The Hall. But you do have to raise an eyebrow at his NCAA record. I don't see his tenure at Maryland going well if that doesn't improve.

From a SJU standpoint having Willard and Holloway both fishing in the same pond as us for recruits is suboptimal, but you'd think Willard would have to turn his attention to the DMV as the first order of business - more of a headache for Georgetown than us.

Willard, if he ends up at MD, does not impact recruiting.  He's not a strong recruiter.  His best players, besides the obvious ones that came with assistants, were top 100/150+ guys that they developed or transfers.

I think Holloway would be a good recruiter at Seton Hall.  But that's a big jump from St. Peter's.

The point several made, and I've made since this rumor circulated a long time ago, is how Maryland can sell its fanbase on Willard given his record in 12 years at Seton Hall.  He took over a better roster than Anderson did (granted, in the old Big East); he didn't make the tournament until year 6; and while he's mostly made the dance in the second half of his tenure, he has 1 NCAA win to show for that (ironically, Anderson beat him a few years back in Round 1).

Right because you don't ever have an agenda and always play it down the middle but you conveniently choose to believe a narrative that fits what you want to believe.  BUt everyone else has an agenda.

Willard on job rumors: "When I get home tomorrow I will discuss things with my agent. I'll be honest: If I'm not here next year, if Shaheen Holloway is here, that would be the happiest thing that ever happened to me"
@NJHoopsHaven

Some may hate this, but a little bit of me appreciate the honesty. We get on coaches all the time for speaking like coaches.

Some of the comments on here are comical.  Willard in his heart knows he is leaving, and stated that he would be talking to his agent.

As for his comments about Holloway, I respect that. All he did was put the name of a former loyal assistant who helped him at Iona and Seton Hall, get his name out front for the Seton Hall job at the best possible time. Not sure why anyone has a problem with this. No one on here has any idea what Willard said to his players and coaches after the game.

Sorry but Williard’s  comments were terrible and totally disrespectful to his team and their fans and even worse for the St. Peter’s players, just absolutely shameful on the part of a grown man with plenty of experience speaking to the media.
All he had to do was shut his mouth , or say no comment , or better still say we just lost a very tough tournament game to an excellent team and all I care to discuss is the game we just played.
But instead the jerk,  who I have grown to respect as a coach,  let’s the entire world know that he is open to jobs , a comment there was zero need to make, everyone who follows college Bball is aware the Terps are looking for a coach and that Williard is high on their list.
And then to complicate matters the classless jerk talks about Holloway, whose team is still playing in the tournament after perhaps the biggest and greatest win in their program’s history , little St. Peter’s over Kentucky, replacing him at the Hall. Well how do you think the 15 kids on St. Peter’s feel right now ? How do you think they are currently looking at their coach in the locker room , Williard just made Holloway’s job this afternoon or tonight that much more difficult.
Last comment/ question do you really think the SH AD is unaware of Holloway to the point that Williard has to public push his candidacy at such an inopportun time ?
I for one don’t.

It’s not honesty.
It’s disrespectful to every kid on the Hall.
What if Posh started talking about transfer destinations in the locker room after the Nova loss? He’d be vilified in this board and throughout college bball for disloyalty, old men shaking their heads on the modern athlete.
Meanwhile, Willard will no doubt go to Maryland on Monday and talk about “molding men” and the sanctity of the “student athlete” while cashing checks that none of his players will ever see in their lifetime.

I get it but it seems like we’re talking about two different issues.

Would you be fine if Willard said point blank I’m the head coach of Seton Hall and then on Monday accepted the Maryland job?

The correct, classy and respectful answer to that question at that point it time is, "I'm not thinking about that right now.  I am thinking about this team and the season we just had."

Do you think Willard’s honesty may have caused his team to no-show last night?

As in WhyTF should I bust my ass for a guy with two feet out the door?

That's exactly what entered my mind. He was already checked out before the game even started. The results show it.

Wilalrd must  believe the Maryland job is a done deal. He better be right or this could be embarrassing.

Just because a rumor doesn’t ultimately pan out does not mean it was a conspiracy theory hatched up by wingnuts. My source isn’t a wingnut. Wrong in the end, yes- wingnut, no.

The idea that the rumor was trumped up by people who wanted to see Anderson leave is not only false it is so stupid.

How could a made up rumor lead the coach to leave if it is fiction?

Hey let me start a rumor that Anderson is leaving for the Knicks, I totally made it up but maybe if I wish hard enough it will turn out to be true...

Willard has developed into a solid coach, with some strengths and some warts.  But all you need to know about him is that he was willing to hire Tiny Morton to save his job, who even Steve Lavin (for all the talk of his alleged sketchiness in recruiting) wanted absolutely no part of.  That's Kevin Willard.

If Miller to Xavier then I guess Wade to Butler make sense and sell their souls to the Devil

If he can find a good recruiter focused on the DMV, I think he will have a shot at some of the higher talent guys in the Metro area particularly NJ.

For Willard and staff specifically DMV guy my best guess is he tries to hire back Tony Skinn who he lost to Ohio St or try to bring back Bino Ranson who left Turgeon for DePaul.

The difference now is his staff budget will be far greater than at SHU.

I thought the Anderson thing was put to rest.  Let’s move on to another coach.

If Willard/Holloway move happens, wonder if Assoc HC Grant Billmeier follows Willard, stays at Hall or maybe gets shot at St. Peter's.

Also shows the difference between SJU and Xavier as programs. Obviously Miller comes with a ton of baggage but Xavier doesn't care about perception when it comes to nonsense like that. They care about winning and it shows.
