Coaching Alternatives
Rehire Lavin. Just think if he did not have cancer treatments, not burden with his Father's death and was given an extended contract before it was to late what might have been. His recruiting was the best in years , coaching ,assistants and public relations were better than present..
I sure hope the next coach we hire will know how to coach on his own and not depend on assistants for the Xs & Os aspect. IMO this rules out Lavin , Mulin and their ilk.

Was going off of your number of posts, apparently a rookie mistake, my apologies.
No worries.
As for the sources. I believe it was LJSA or Fordham who said "The funny thing is -- and I know you know this -- that there are posters here who do have connections inside the halls at St. John's. They can't say much because they risk outing their mole" this is true. But it works both ways. Just because these guys hold back info, doesn't mean they can't be quick so squash nonsense.
Yes, I know. I was pointing out that you were complaining about people not revealing sources when you weren't revealing sources.
Yet his reign still is supreme. Why is that? It's because he has the backing of some of the most prominent alumni.
His reign "is supreme" as you put it because Chris Mullin IS St John's basketball. Powerful people support him because of what he did on the court here as a player. This program would be aspiring to be DePaul if Mullin had picked Duke over St John's. That's why he gets away with not being very good at running a college basketball program.

I seriously doubt there is anyone in the St John's community over the age of 40 who has the balls to fire Mullin, and THAT is the problem.

Our only saving grace in this current debacle is that Cragg isn't one of the guys who grew up worshiping the ground Chris walks on so at some point he will realize he either attaches his AD star to the Mullin wagon, or he fires him and hires the coach he is willing to risk his career on.

Now if we can just find a way to make the $$ work out, then maybe we can move on from this disaster sooner rather than later.
I seriously believe Cragg has the balls to at least put pressure on Mullin to resign. Making him replace his buddy Richmond is one way, plus I'm sure they have already had a sit down regarding this past season. We all want results and why not? After all a $2,000,000 salary should warrant more of an effort on Mullins part.

I agree Jack. Cragg might be the best hire St John's ever made if he has the guts to be his own man. I hear he does so I have some optimism on that front.

I just don't understand Mullin. I don't understand how he isn't the hardest working head coach in the Big East. Afterall, it's his legacy that will be damaged when this falls apart. How does a guy who worked so hard as a player to be great, fail to do so as a newly branded HC?? Hubris?
If he wants to be a CEO head coach then he needs to hire 3 excellent recruiters and have a bench coach who is the defacto day-to-day head coach. He may have tried to do that up front, but once slice left this became a dysfunctional staff the way it was assembled. What's he done to fix it? Nothing.

If money is the issue, he should be out beating up donors/alum for the cash he needs to buyout his mistakes on the staff. If its not the problem then WTF is he doing?

As I recall, Mullin led SJU to one final 4 in his time as a player. Clearly he was the greatest player in SJU history.
Seems like he has banked a lot of goodwill for his 4 years as a player. Has he been active in fundraising since leaving for the NBA?

Before he got hired, there was a poster who every time Mullin's name was mentioned would remind us that Mullin never donated. I don't think he had much to do with the school. But there will surely be a poster or two who interject to the contrary here.
Seems to be a lot of moving pieces for one vacancy at this point.
Yes. Also, several days of no news makes me feel like they are busy working on something.

He would never downgrade the program as long as Louie is still around.

To be honest from what I hear the changes stop at Matt and that is very underwhelming...

Assuming Matt's replacement is a recruiter and not another friend of Mullin's.

Yikes. That won’t cut it.
So, the GSJ ‘moving on’ rumor is also bogus?
Well, I’m hoping Paultz’s remark that “Seems to be a lot of moving pieces for one vacancy at this point.” proves prescient.
I’d be surprised that Cragg would settle for just replacing Matt and otherwise keeping the current Staff with just ‘1 recruiter’.
If he settles, then he’s got much less leverage than many think and it may mean he’s not long for the position.
Because I doubt he came here to be Mullin’s caddy like more recent previous ADs..

Rumor was GSJ might be leaving for an NBA job. That has not materialized. And I am growing skeptical everyday it will. There is nothing to suggest Mitch is leaving. So right now it stops at 1. Could it change yes. But right now don't see it. The longer this drags out for all 3 spots the less likely it means a change.

I'm actually going to be in Twin Cities for work. Going to sneaker party on Friday and games on Saturday. Be interested to see if Chris is there. Obviously Final Four is good place for rumors and job interviews.

K, doesn’t sound good. Maybe it takes time for NBA jobs to ‘line up’?
Anyway, enjoy the Final Four!
And I hope you bring back some juicy ‘positive’ rumors about our Johnnies!
Lol.

i don't think you can expect Cragg to force Mullin to replace GSJ or MR if he doesn't want to. This will be a make or break year for Mullin assuming he returns.

Sure will, and on his terms.
Yikes.
I know I’d be humbled by how the season ended and realize changes have to be made and be open to reasonable ideas.
But then again, I’m not a hoops legend.
Lol.

Positive? I guess you aren’t familiar with his body of work.

Last off season, after becoming frustrated with not landing a big man, no staff changes and a weak non-conference schedule, many (including me) had this season as the make or break year. But, it seems like we are stuck with him, so I do get your perspective.

That'd be extremely disappointing if Mitch and GSJ both come back.

One positive, however, is that Mullin will be fired if next year is underwhelming. He has burned bridges with so many fans by not recruiting or hiring competent ACs. He'll be on an extremely short leash and will not get another chance. He could've made that leash a lot longer simply by hiring a new AC and showing up to recruiting events.

This is just as mind boggling to me as the Femi and Sidney situations, but I won't try to understand his logic any longer.
