Coaching Alternatives

It's not that confusing. Coaching a college team requires busting your ass all season and every minute before, after and in between. especially on the recruiting trail. Anyone not willing to do that needs to leave the job to someone else.

Do you know for a fact that Mullin is not dedicated? Stop with all your suppositions, you seem to know what is going in Mullin's head, 24/7.
He sure as hell wasn't dedicated to recruiting. . .
do you know that as a fact?
Femi does.
Burke does.
Sidney Wilson does.
Sid Wilson? He left here because of Chris?
No ironically he did commit to SJU. But it wasn't a full house for his visit.
Yikes! Not showing up to visits for TOP 100 RECRUITS is unbelievable! Not showing up for even a low level recruit would be bad enough as it's very disrespectful of their time. Sad that we have to scold Mullin like he's a child, but I hope Cragg never allows this to happen again.
Not giving Femi any love might be the most inexcusable act in his tenure. Such a perfect fit for a obviously glaring team weakness.

My 2 cents: Not a fan of Mullin. Needed a new assistant last year. Desperately needs 2 new ones this year. However, I suggest the mods start banning the losers who have infiltrated this forum with bs lies and rumors out of their ass. Point us to sources regarding Hurley, Pitino, et al. You can't. And if you can't you should be banned. Talk about fake news.

Marc Hsu is the only choice to replace Matt. He’d also net us a grad transfer PG overnight.

Hsu served as the interim coach for WKU when Stansbury went down for four games. He was 3-1 with two of those wins on the road.

He is an elite recruiter. He’s a 9/10 and Matt is a 6/7 on a scale of 1-10 IMO. He’s a head coach at an assistant’s salary. And he’s a beast in recruiting.

You get an Xs and Os/player development guy with a recruiter.

Could not agree more. We needed him yesterday. Make it happen!

This is a fan website. Were are all here because we want to hear the rumors and inside dirt on the program, but expecting people to out sources is absurd.

There are enough people on this site (and others) who are connected to the program enough to hear whispers and give insight on a lot of stuff, but NONE of them are going to be accurate all the time. If you are around here long enough, its not hard to figure out who you can trust and who you can't. That said, everything that is shared on fan sites is fluid. What's true today, might not be true in a week or two.

My advice, is take the info from sources you trust with a HUGE grain of salt. Ignore those you think are full of it, and report those to the mods who you think are lying through their teeth.

You'll enjoy the time you spend here a lot more if you don't take it all too seriously.

I've been around this forum longer than you have. I did not make my post blindly. I in fact have solid sources on the program. Not once has Hurley or Pitino's name come up. Not once. From law school BOT members, alums, and even undergrad BOT members. That is why I posted what I did. These stories are so off based, there's 0 truth them, 0. This is coming from someone who is over the Mullin experiment too.

If someone reveals their source, that person likely won't have a source anymore. I would have thought this would be common sense. The Hurley thing has been floating around for a while and the poster who mentioned it yesterday is not a jerk. . .

In my opinion, anyone who actually uses the term "fake news" should be the one banned.

Leave it to you to bring in politics. Of course you do.

I would jump for joy if Hurley came here this year. I'd also be happy with a winning coach like Pitino coming in. Not going to happen. For anyone who knows how this President operates, and the players on the BOT who run the show.

so its fair to say after reading everyones thoughts here: he didn't recruit (left that all for Matt) and he didn't coach during the game(st jean), sooooooo do i even need to say it??????? Just save your dignity, save face, go out on top. step down, stay a legend

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. LOL

Possible, but I seriously doubt it. I've been a mod for 20 years. Was a member and poster for a handful of years before that. I joined about 6 months after the original site was started.

When did you join?

You're going to have to be more specific about your sources. Their lack of info conflicts with what a lot of people are hearing about Hurley. How are we too judge who is more trustworthy without knowing more specifics about where you get your information?

The Pitino stuff was an April Fools joke. You should put it behind you and move on. Everyone else has.

Being a Mod is so 60's and late 70's. Then again the Modfather is still one of my top 5 artists.

Just keeping the new wave music references going.

Seriously this is your argument we have to be inside the halls of SJU to confirm everything...
The funny thing is -- and I know you know this -- that there are posters here who do have connections inside the halls at St. John's. They can't say much because they risk outing their moles. But the things I've heard from people who do have connections are some of the most ridiculous things imaginable. St. John's was and still is a mess, and the sooner Cragg cleans it up the better.
I have no inside connections. But I know there have been plenty of ridiculous things. Mullin hiring an inexperienced staff, Constant trips and inordinate amount of time by him and Mitch n Cali, having only 1 recruiter. Constant failure in getting bigs. Poor HS recruiting. Not going after Dort when RMN said he was interested in SJU. Not showing up for the Femi visit. Etc.

Was going off of your number of posts, apparently a rookie mistake, my apologies.

As for the sources. I believe it was LJSA or Fordham who said "The funny thing is -- and I know you know this -- that there are posters here who do have connections inside the halls at St. John's. They can't say much because they risk outing their mole" this is true. But it works both ways. Just because these guys hold back info, doesn't mean they can't be quick so squash nonsense.

Do the math though. Mullin has gotten away with defying common sense many times, all while producing nothing but mediocre results. Yet his reign still is supreme. Why is that? It's because he has the backing of some of the most prominent alumni.

Chris' coaching warts are noted by many on the Board. He is also defended by many others.
Barring dramatic 'breaking news', he'll be our HC next season for 'better or worse'.
That said, and not knowing the man's mindset about how he views his job's challenges going into next year, the good thing is that it looks like at least 2 AC spots are up for replacement.
One problem is, we need those AC replacements on board, post haste, to attack our recruiting needs as well as stabilize and manage the roster.
Here's hoping we're talking 'days' and not weeks until the Staff is re-structured and on the job, including Chris...and Mitch.
Here's hoping MC pushes all the right buttons.

I’m thinking the same Chicago. Think Mullin will be back w new assistants. I don’t think Mullin is recruiting at this time, which if true is a mistake and inexcusable.Somebody on the staff has to recruit now.

No worries.

Yes, I know. I was pointing out that you were complaining about people not revealing sources when you weren't revealing sources.
Yet his reign still is supreme. Why is that? It's because he has the backing of some of the most prominent alumni.
His reign "is supreme" as you put it because Chris Mullin IS St John's basketball. Powerful people support him because of what he did on the court here as a player. This program would be aspiring to be DePaul if Mullin had picked Duke over St John's. That's why he gets away with not being very good at running a college basketball program.

I seriously doubt there is anyone in the St John's community over the age of 40 who has the balls to fire Mullin, and THAT is the problem.

Our only saving grace in this current debacle is that Cragg isn't one of the guys who grew up worshiping the ground Chris walks on so at some point he will realize he either attaches his AD star to the Mullin wagon, or he fires him and hires the coach he is willing to risk his career on.

Now if we can just find a way to make the $$ work out, then maybe we can move on from this disaster sooner rather than later.

It's hard to argue against the position that someone should be recruiting now, but realistically that is going to be a pretty difficult task until coaching situation is settled, not to mention status of players like Heron & Simon. If everyone on this board knows there is some uncertainly as to next year's staff, including the head coach, pretty sure various recruits' teams are also aware. Which only reinforces Chicago's point that it is critical staff situation gets resolved in next few days so we are able to recruit w/o two hands tied behind our back.
