Coaching Alternatives
Not to send the board into a frenzy, but someone I trust who has connections told me he's heard from a couple different sources there's chatter about Mullin possibly stepping aside and that would clear the path for Bobby Hurley.

Not an April Fools. I'm not someone here who has sources, but I trust the person who told me this and I know he has connections. I'm just the messenger on this. Could be hogwash and might not come close to happening, but figured I would share. If it ends up being complete BS the mods can delete.
I for one sure hope it is true. The sooner we get a real staff and head coach in place the sooner we can build towards a relevant SJU basketball program.

I think we need to move on from current situation, but can someone tell me why I should be excited about Bobby Hurley? Guy has done very little in 4 years at ASU with significant resources in a down conference. What am I missing?

So yea.

The Duke pedigree?
Maybe BH was the source’s ‘gut’ about the ‘new’ HC hire without knowing anything about the possible candidates?

I happen to agree with you on the lack of importance on a Play In Game.
But he won the game and then got to play in the Big Dance.
And he made the Dance before with Buffalo.

I'm not going to sing Bobby's praises more than Mullin because its just chatter right now but I personally would gladly take him. Crazy Bobby or not. I'd feel a lot better going to sleep at night and the success of SJU with him opposed to Chris.

Great college player, great pedigree, has won at both programs, dont believe he would look to leave as the metropolitan area is home, very passionate about the game and does work hard at recruiting.
I followed ASU this past season as my son and I know Luguenz. He demands discipline and threw a player off the team for transgressions which increased my respect for him. Could they have done better you bet. He was also very unhappy with the fans at ASU this past season and got into it with them for not being supportive enough of the team. At times they played at home to very small crowds. Not a good sign, whereas we showed if we do well we can easily fill the garden.
Forth those that are too young or who just didn't know we were the runner up for Bobby Hurley when he selected Duke.

Bobby wouldn't be my ideal candidate, however I'd much prefer him to CM.

Arizona St also has TWO 4 star high school students coming in next year and the #32 overall class on 247. Anybody remember high school recruits?

What does Chris Mullin want?
Does he want to continue to be HC beyond his 6-year deal and, hence, will succumb to pressure. and accept ‘some’ staff overhaul in order to stabilize the program and structure it better for future success?
If he doesn’t wish to be St. John’s’ HC beyond his current deal, then why deal with the hassle of an annoying AD who will monitor his every move into next year?
I have no clue, but maybe there’s ‘some’ smoke to this latest buzz.

While ASU might have more 'resources' to me there is always something to be said about a basketball coach being at a basketball school. ASU is not a basketball school. St. John's is.

Agreed North. I also think that Hurley is a little out of place out West there. He is a Northeast guy and I think would recruit very well in this area where he has a ton of connections. There’s also the Duke connection between him and Cragg so who knows. I hope this has some legs.

...... t someone I trust who has connections told me he's heard from a couple different sources there's chatter about Mullin possibly stepping aside and that would clear the path for Bobby Hurley. ..... .
—————-
Per the below linked news article Coach Hurley’s 2018 contract extension, (which contains retention bonuses for him to stay at UArizona) provides that there is a $2.5M buyout to be paid to UArizona if he leaves to coach another school.

I would be shoked if St.John’s has $2.5M or has a donor that will pay the $2M buyout fee.

“If Hurley leaves for another job
If Hurley breaks the contract to take a college or pro coaching position, the university may require Hurley to pay the school:

$3 million if Hurley terminates the contract in the first year of the five-year deal.

$2.5 million if Hurley terminates the contract the second year.

$2 million if Hurley terminates the contract the third year.

$500,000 if Hurley terminates the contract the fourth year”

Thanks for the info Otis. I agree there is no way SJ pays to get any coach out of his contract. Our esteemed president has not even allowed Mullin to fill a $500K Slice vacancy over the past three years. I don't think he has a vision for the basketball program other than cost containment. Cragg is caught between a rock and a hard place. In the end it has always been the president of the university that made the final bad decision and we have been led by the weakest presidents for over 20 years now compared to all the other Big East schools.

As I mentioned earlier, maybe the ‘buzz’ Is legit but Hurley too expensive an answer.
I think there may be some credence to this rumor.
All depends on what Mullin wants.
IF he doesn’t want to be our HC beyond the next 2 years, why put up with unwanted changes now?
Why not walk away on the high note of a winning season?
We shall see.

You’re incorrect about filling that slice role. Mullin could’ve filled that spot anytime over the last two years if he wanted to, he chose not to.

That’s not Bobby G fault that’s Mullin arrogance.

If true, things are worse than I thought. Mullin can't believe he has a complete staff. It almost seems as if he does not care.
