Coaching Alternatives
Thought I would start a thread on just SJzu staff hires.

Obviously Matt will officially be out next week. Number of names but one seems to be influenced by Cragg...
I’ll bite I didn’t notice Scheyer on the list. If not him which of Hsu, Pinckney, Pecora, Phelps seems ‘influenced by Cragg’ to you?
Phelps due to his ACC history?
Just curious.
Hoping we get 2-3 of these guys very soon.
Still thinking Mitch survives the ‘house cleaning’ but hope not.

No they aren't poaching Ks staff. Why in the world would a Duke assistant join a staff for SJU...

More about Duke background...

Perhaps if the Duke assistant came with some expectation of eventually becoming the head coach.

Id love to have Scheyer here. Also love to have Mike Rice as #1 bench coach, and D'Angelo Harrison involved too. I know people will say no to D because no coaching experience but he would kill it. Lots of ties to Houston/Texas area and has passion! Add Grasso and these four would kill it, but i know I'm dreaming a little.

Hope we don’t have that dominate the off season discussions as last year . DLO ? I admit I don’t know . What would his responsibilities be ? What would his role be ? There are several former Players who have expressed interest in joining the staff . Marcus Hatten being one . Has DLO finished his overseas professional career ?

Scheyer has no connection to NYC or the Big East. I don't get people's interest in him. We would be a stop for him before jumping to the ACC/Big 10. And why would he leave an associate head coach at Duke for the same role here?
Andy Borman ?
I like that name. Great NYC and national connections, and pedigree

D'Lo is still playing though I believe, so maybe one day when his playing career is over. The better choice currently would be Marcus Hatten. Not only does he want to be here, but he now has actual connections due to his AAU program.

I don’t question St Jean’s enthusiasm. But it is absolutely preposterous for a high-major D1 team to have a 28 year old running the huddle and calling the plays. Preposterous!! Watching the NCAA Tourney makes that so painfully clear. And, frankly, pisses me off. The good news is that I can imagine Cragg, with his Duke pedigree, being somewhat pissed off about it too and laying the groundwork to change it.

Hatten will never coach here. His social media practices will never allow for it.

Can you imagine a 32yr. old coaching an NBA team? He must suck, due to his age only. Talk about absolutes!!!!

St Jean came here with 1 whole year of experience as an “assistant player development coach” at Sacremento, and prior to that, “generated extensive personnel reports and statistical analysis that were instrumental in the scouting process” for the team for a year. (According to his official bio.)

In other words, he came to St John’s with **zero** in-game coaching experience. I am not saying the guy didn’t deserve a job here, but assuming the head coach role during Big East games?? C’mon.

Seems like we, as a program, have to bend like a pretzel to construct a coaching staff that our less than capable HC can work with. He doesn't seem interested in doing his job, where recruiting is concerned. Hopefully, a staff can be constructed wher CM can retire gracefully and leave us in good shape.

What players did this hypothetical 32-year-old have at his disposal?

St Jean is the least of the problems with the coaching staff imo.. the biggest problem starts and ends with the guy that sits to the left of Mullin on the bench.

So not a "real" NBA team. ;)

“ St. Jean primarily manages scouting and game planning responsibilities, oversees the player development program, and directs the team's video operations and statistical analysis.

St. Jean’s precociousness has not gone with notice, as he was recognized in May by the National Association of Basketball Coaches with a selection to the organization’s 30-under-30 list, an accolade that highlights up-and-coming coaches in the game of college basketball.”

So the issue I have with St Jean is how the team has not developed. The game plans have been awful. I always questioned why he’s running the huddles and it’s frustrating.
