Coaching Alternatives

Let's see, it seems to me that most head coaches start out as someone's assistant. So what is your problem.

Don't most head coaches start out as someone's assitant

What was Gonzaga before Mark Few.
An Elite Eight team. ;)

But seriously what Few has done is remarkable even if he didn't exactly inherit the Titanic.

And about the context thing, just in case it comes up again, I'm just trying to keep the threads short and the natives humored.
Dan Monson was the coach of the Zags when they went to the Elite 8 and Few made them a perennial powerhouse ever since. Sometimes you can lose a good coach and come out even better than before. Perfect example that I was not even thinking of. You helped make my point that you just have to hire the guy that you feel is right for your program and not necessarily look for the coach for the next 20 years. Hoping either CM gets things righted real soon or we move forward with the right coach....

First, that wasn't your point or else you again made it using an incorrect analogy, but that doesn't make my joke any more or less funny.

Second, Fews are few and far between.

There was that poll preseason by certain anonymous BE assistant coaches that accounting for all the factors, had us at around 3rd or 4th best job in the league with Nova and Gtown at the top and right around Marquette, I believe. The pros were the media attention, NY market, Garden and ability to attract positive attention (and fans) with even a decent season, like this year. The cons were the facilities, on campus environment and having to deal with some of the NY/local AAU and HS coaching personalities. We are still a pretty attractive option for the right candidate, even now.

That is a good question. An argument can be made that most ACC, Big 10 & SEC jobs are more desirable than SJ. Throw in any number of mid majors and we may not make the top 50. Two decades of under performing does not help.
Depends on the criteria. Lots of schools probably have greater facilities and better funding. But with the right staff, I think the potential for sustained success here is probably top 50. That said, I haven't scanned a list of D1 teams, so I can't precisely say who I'd put above and below us.
My totally biased gut tells me that a St. John’s coach who developed a consistent winning program here—between say the accomplishments of Jim Boeheim to Mark Few—would be lionized in the NYC and N.Y. Metro media and endow the program with national significance.
The St. John’s ‘job’ is Top 50–lousy facilities and commuter school rap included—because of that potential, imo.

I think for the right candidate this can bea great job. The question is will we ever find that person.

St. John's is unique in my opinion being the only basketball school that calls NYC and MSG its home. There's some coaches that would probably put the job on the bottom of their list, but i would think that this is has got to be high on the list of other coaches. Maybe I'm wrong as our last 7 coaches haven't worked out for one reason or another,
I realize that I am not the norm, but I have never viewed MSG and NYC as these great recruiting tools. I think the sooner we strop trying to sell MSG and the city to recruits, the better off we will be.
Curious......were you at this year's Nova game, last year's Duke game, or the Dwight Hardy Pitt game? I know it's just three games over a span of years, but those in attendance know the power of that building. If we built a perennial contender, MSG would be a very effective recruiting tool.

There have been a week of rumors and now looks Hoiberg is about to be official to Nebraska, hopefully CM and MC did the right thing with Matt A. and are keeping him home! Or plan B better be in place!

He's gone
And its the right thing

Your probably right we are Transfer you and not 1 mention of us all week regarding new transfers.

While Chris was writing an Op-Ed about physical trainer licenses and talking NBA with TMC in interviews, Matt A. has probably been calling his prospects and letting them know he is making a move. He tells them something like: "St. John's is great, but I moving into an even better situation. I would love to talk to you and your family about Coach Hoiberg and our plans at Nebraska".

We Are.......

Without a plan.

Thought I would start a thread on just SJzu staff hires.

Obviously Matt will officially be out next week. Number of names but one seems to be influenced by Cragg...

Well to be a bright-sister, I’m guessing that Cragg knows it only a matter of time before Mullin is gone and he can hire his own coach. I can live with that, because I think he knows what our program needs.
