Coaching Alternatives
Adam is right.... Willard was on the cusp of being fired, but lasted because of the class he had coming in after his 4th season. So, it (or he) bought himself another season with the incoming class and the hiring of Tiny Morton.

I'll give WIllard more props this season more than anything, but I still consider Seton Hall to be mediocre. Some of y'all are using 'em as a "superior" team due to our ineptness.
I’m not saying he should have been fired. But our fans would have absolutely been calling for his head. “20 Wins with Bobby Gs players then 3 straight years of 500 or worse!!”

You’re in the “anti mullin” camp MJ but you’re objective and realistic about it. I have no problem with posters thinking he’s not the man for the job. But like you said, pointing to other situations such as the Hall as proof that we can and should do better doesn’t always work. The hall stuck with a coach who they were much less invested in than we are.

Bandied about might be an understatement.

If Matt leaves then we hire a veteran coach as an assistant, we better hope they don't become the next head coach after Mullin is gone. Assistants are assistants...head coaches are head coaches. Would be a cheap bandaid solution IMO. The last thing we need is another head coach who has never been head coach or has been mediocre as a former head coach.

Lol mike come on man now you’re worrying about crazy hypotheticals?

Why should he it’s easy money Why can’t Richmond hit the road and use his fame and start recruiting, not in the know but what contribution has he made,if he can’t recruit it seems like he would be easily replace but being so friendly to coach that is not going to happen. I am all in for an asst HC

Give me two ex-head coaches or one ex-head coach and a connected recruiter that wants to grind and build through multiple channels as opposed to a transfer dominant route.

Agreed. Not to mention that no one, I mean literally no one, cares about that program aside from their diehard core. I've lived in Jersey for a while now and can count on one hand how many Hall fans I know. And they don't get the casual sports fan either; far more Nova, St. John's, Duke, Cuse and even Rutgers.

Seems to be rumor that if we make a change at AC it might be the successor once Mullin leaves. Just hope that's not the case. We need A list talent, not re-treads. There are plenty of legit coaches who would come here IMO.

I don't know about that based on the names I've heard so far.
I'm resigning myself to the fact next year is going to be painful and we are going to struggle in the next 2 signing periods but such is life.

Realistically he needs at least 2 staff changes, all 3 would be really good.

I think he needs two coaches who can get on the road and recruit with at least 1 with solid coaching experience. Preferably HC experience.

What I expect though is basically if Matt leaves 1 change and not particularly exciting.

I'm still hoping for four staff changes.

Not only forcing a new assistant on him but the coach-in-waiting as well? Sounds like a recipe for disaster but then again this is SJU.

I think most prospective coaches will know it's our coaches who are ineffective, not the program as a whole. Looks like our facilities will be updated soon, we have very good attendance, the campus has improved a lot over the years, we are looking to play much more at MSG, and we just hired a competent AD with a winning pedigree. Not to mention, Big East affiliation, national TV, and being in NYC with lots of talent all over the boros, LI, NJ, and Westchester. We are still a huge step up for a coach in a mid major league and even a guy like Hurley would consider us assuming UCLA doesn't grab him. Just hope we don't get an unproven no name. What about Pitino's son?

If our assistant coaches and head coach don't recruit, they damn well better be great at player development and in game coaching. Unfortunately, our coaches are not good at either. New assistant coaches are a start. Hate to lose Matt who seems to be the only AC doing any recruiting.

You think SJ is a step up from Minnesota?

Hope by next 2 signing periods you don't mean 2 years worth because that will bury us in the basement for the foreseeable future and make our job even less desirable for an eventual HC change. Don't know what is going on with Mullin's staff but even if Matt is holding off on recruiting because of uncertain job status the other 2 ACs and Mullin should be recruiting unless the uncertainty is at the HC position.

I mean this April and November.
April 2020 might be an issue to but a lot depends on who comes in and what the landscape looks like.
