Cluess
Have to think Cluess coming down stretch is the guy. Add Borman, Rasheen Davis, another quality AC and go to work. Practical hire at this point.
Maybe, but practical not to rush at this point. This hire shouldn’t be about next year or the year after. Should try to make a smart hire, with long-term vision for once. If that takes another week or two, so be it (on the plus side, might cause some posters to explode).

Got to think Cluess and Borman would keep LJ and Heron here which would give us fighting chance next year with sit out transfers and some grad transfer addition.

Thank God for Mike Cragg. I mean seriously, what other AD in the country could've delivered TIm Cluess to St. John's. Masterful work here.
Solid guy around the water cooler I’m told. Donuts every Friday. He does a mean Journey karaoke at the annual athletic department gathering too. Never once picked a bad hotel in 30 years at Duke and the toilets he picked out for the renovations in 2000 are still being complimented almost two decades later. Hurley sh*t on them years ago and on Cragg last week.

__________

Had Cragg had more $ to work with then he could have delivered a more attractive candidate.

Craig was merely playing the cards dealt him and following the directions provided to him by the StJ's Board of Trustees..

I respect your opinion but at same time will you give praise to Cluess when he wins here consistently like he had done his whole life and at every level?
100 percent. And if you go through this thread and re-read my posts (not that I would expect to you), my criticism has been the same throughout. I'm more upset with the process and how this all played out than I am the end result. I think Cluess could work out just fine, but the way this was conducted is laughable in my opinion.
I agree 100%. Cragg looking more like a rookie right now than a seasoned vet.

I ask again, why the rush? Cluess will be there in two weeks if you want him that badly.

You think this fan base is going to put up with another 2 disaster seasons. They should not be expected. If they lose LJ and Heron and go through another 1 win big east season ticket sales and attendance sales will plummet.

Get Cluess and some ace recruiters In here. He will surprise to upside with limited roster the next couple of years (Guy has done so at every level) while assistants pound pavement and restock talent base over next 18 months

I get it and frankly am disappointed in the way a lot of things were handled in the last week. I am assuming Cluess, but must say this process is so cloudy that nothing would surprise me including someone we are not even thinking about.

Mike Rhoades?

Even more interesting is that Iona releases a statement saying that St. John's has not asked permission to talk to Cluess and that he is their coach until he retires.

Remember all the names that were floating around here after Norm was fired? Then we heard the annoucement about Lavin being hired straight from leftfield.

Deja vu all over again?

Yes. If the third and fourth seasons are good. Ask 76er fans.

Only 46 and close to 20 years as head coach. My pick, but I also think Cluess can be successful here.

Would be a home run in my view. Would be shameful if they didn’t at least reach out to gauge interest.

Cluess got hosed by Iona. A buyout 2.5x his annual salary? That’s unheard of, and I’m not sure that would hold up in court if it was challenged since he unrepresented.

Imagine Coach K having a $22,500,000 buyout? Or a plumber having to pay 200k + to work for another company?

He is a practical hire like the Toyota Camry is a practical car. It gets you from home to the store and back with great reliability. It gets you to Bingo on time. It's the safe choice for a man on a budget. But it doesn't inspire excitement. There are tons of Camrys on the lot. I would rather pursue a limited edition Porsche, and give our best offer after reaching between the seat cushions for every last nickel. Every coaching hire is a chance to bring the program to greatness. I don't see greatness with Cluess. Like others have said, with all the coaching changes since he was at Iona, who has pursued him?

Solid hire. Good basketball bio.

Why not Shaka Smart then? He’s on the hot seat and he admitted that. He seems more like a Big East guy than a power five guy to be honest. I love his style...just don’t think it works with most top 50 talent.

Rhoade makes $1.2mm per year so likely too expensive for us

Agree we should kick the tires on Rhoades. Also, disappointed I am not hearing anything on Odom.

I am not outraged by Cluess, but prefer one of these experienced, up-and-coming coaches in their mid 40s.

You guys are off base to think cluess is out there forever. I guarantee you iona is already strategizing.
What if they offer him 10 years at his option, 750 per now escalating to 1.25 with a 3 million buyout. He's rock solid there, finishes his career nicely and doesn't need the pressure of being fired here in 4 or 5 years .

Sju must move decisively or we will again look foolish.

On that matter, let cluess sign gsj as associate head coach for a guy who is a proven coach. If Tim has had enough after 5 or 6 years, we have our program set for a long time w a 35vyear old up and comer
