Cluess

Okay.....Cluess is a much better coach than Mullin. It's just going to come down to recruiting. He will need two strong recruiters who have experience swimming in the deep end. You can compete in the MAAC with scraps. In the BE, you need to land some big dogs.

Well-said PharmD and Adam.
I'm disappointed we didn't get Hurley but it seemed more and more unlikely as the days rolled on and when I heard he was speaking tonight at the ASU annual dinner, fuhgeddaboudit folks, thundering applause would ensue.
That said, some of us are being too harsh on Cragg. This came on him as a surprise when Mullin expected an 'extension' to his deal, likely a 'guaranteed' deal. Forget that Jack.
Looks like he fell back onto Cluess as Hurley was going to be 'no'.
Cluess will work hard and I bet he'll succeed and yeah I think Cragg will guide him in constructing his staff--one I expect to be very hard working and successful.
12-7-4 is the new mantra at St. John's.
About time.

Not happening. But I will give you one point, it would definitely prompt some excitement and fill the Garden.

But, really.......not happening.

Tom...really?!!?

Cragg shat the bed. We paid 5 million dollars and lost players to swap Mullin for Cluess?

Where was Cluess going? Why not take a one year shot with St. Jean? Cluess would have been there and cheaper next year.

If Mullin was forced out after a tournament berth what is Cragg’s punishment for handling this like an amateur?

The worst part about this is ASU didn’t even flinch. Their fans laughed it off. They admit they are a second tier program and they treated us like an annoying mosquito instead of a threat.

This isn’t just bad for us...this is bad for the whole conference. Behind Nova and Gtown you’d think we would have the third most attractive job.
I am ok with Cluess but really looked like this whole thing came as a surprise to Cragg. Very reactionary.
Yeah, from all I’ve heard, this was not planned. Cragg expected Mullin back next year, then the impasse. I think people are making up their own narratives at times to get fired up. Would you be fired up if you found out that when Cragg made the statement that Mullin was the coach a week ago that it might have been the case and an argument ensued after that that lead to this all going down? Just saying Marillac, you’re making up your own pseudo-facts without knowing how it all unfolded. I don’t think Cragg had much more time than the past week or two to work on this.
Stop making excuses for Cragg. He overplayed his hand like a delusional nerd in high school telling everyone he would go to the prom with the hottest girl in school and then looked ridiculous when he was turned down. Now he’s going with his fat cousin from New Rochelle.

If Hurley is your only dream target what good does it do to let all the media report that? You don’t tel the seller of your dream house that it’s your dream house.

Cragg controlled the timetable. He scheduled the meeting. He loaded the gun and put it in front of Mullin.

I’ll never believe for a second that Mullin would have resigned unless he was forced out. He reached out to Hsu before his meeting.

We are a laughing stock. They are howling in Tempe tonight at our expense. Every forum in the conference is making fun of us.

Cluess knows the recruiting landscape, and I'm confident his staff will know how to recruit. The staff better put more emphasis on defense, though, to be competitive in the Big East.

Chicago Days...you aren’t this gullible are you?
I don’t get why all the Cluess hate. I think this is a great hire. The last 2 coaches we hired were all sizzle and no steak. They both obviously didn’t work out. Now we may possibly get a guy who by all accounts is a very good in game coach who has done nothing but win and people hate it? He’s not a flashy hire by any means, but who cares?

He’s 60 yes, but Coach K is 72. If he lasts 12 years it’d be more than the tenure of our last 2 coaches combined by far. The one concern I have is recruiting. I think you have to put great recruiters by his side at this level. But if you get him players he will win.
You don't create this kind of turmoil resulting in a potentially gutted team and end up with Cluess. We did the run and gun thing for the past 4 years to no avail.

I don't see this as a home run not even a double. This will create no buzz and very little recruiting interest.

I am hoping that Cluess is a fallback and there is someone else in the hopper. I wish fans will wait to see what happens before throwing aspersions based on supposition.

No, just curious as hell that's all!
He keeps coming up with 'stuff', some of which comes to pass. That's all. Lol.

You mean like how we assumed Mullin would
stop improving next year and then blamed him for it in advance? Or how we act like Repole is going to save us every four years only and then fire a coach after making the tournament?

Think positive (something that doesn't come easily to me): We won't have Mitch Richmond to kick around anymore. :)

I think Mullin has basically been lazy recruiting, the most important part of being a HC. Matt alone did a good job getting transfers. What happened to knowing where all the gyms were, the janitors, blah, blah, blah?
Great player, poor coach.

At least it appears Cluess has a track record. Let's hold him accountable if he fails.

All I heard this entire past season on this board was how terrible of a coach Mullin was. Wishing we’d get an X and O’s guy etc. He leaves and we hire one of the better in game coaches in the country and people complain.... gotta love this fanbase.

hmmmm Now I'm wondering if Rick is coming.
Not the Tom Bradley quote but knowing that Moose pm'ed him.
Maybe telling Tom to pipe it down, that it has to be on the D/L until the time is right.
It's just how business is done.
