Cluess

Hope it works out, but if it’s Cluess and Cluess so quickly, then this is an underwhelming hire at best.

Nah, just in “coach search fatigue” :)

Not expecting to hear many chants of "defense" in CA or MSG, except if in jest.

If Cragg was led to believe Hurley would come here, but didn't have a back-up plan with multiple candidates, he deserves some criticism. It's not impossible that Cluess was his second choice all along, but that feels unlikely.

I was never in love with BH, but I did get excited thinking about Borman and Hsu. Now, I am guessing Borman is out if Hurley is not the guy.

Again, I can rally for Cluess, but I hope this coaching search wasn't just a fumble and scurry.

Can you imagine being UCLA with that wait?

Paultz,

Thanks for the photo levity. We all need it.

Given the fact that Cluess has been a successful coach his whole career, I suspect that he will solve the defensive riddle when he comes to Jamaica.

Cragg shat the bed. We paid 5 million dollars and lost players to swap Mullin for Cluess?

Where was Cluess going? Why not take a one year shot with St. Jean? Cluess would have been there and cheaper next year.

If Mullin was forced out after a tournament berth what is Cragg’s punishment for handling this like an amateur?

The worst part about this is ASU didn’t even flinch. Their fans laughed it off. They admit they are a second tier program and they treated us like an annoying mosquito instead of a threat.

This isn’t just bad for us...this is bad for the whole conference. Behind Nova and Gtown you’d think we would have the third most attractive job.

I am ok with Cluess but really looked like this whole thing came as a surprise to Cragg. Very reactionary.

Our national search only extends to Riverdale for Manhattan coaches and New Rochelle for a once spurned Tim Cluess.
The amount of misinformation being put forth by all parties is insulting. Mullin supposedly wanted an extension a few days ago. President Bobby said no via Cragg. Mullin supposedly went above Cragg directly to Booby G and was rebuffed.
All of a sudden Mullin decides to step down for family reasons.
Well, if he decided to "step down", under what terms? Pay me my entire contractual salary because I don't want to coach anymore? President Booby was not independently looking for Mullin's departure. He had to be inspired with $$$. Now we are led to believe $$$ is the major issue and can get Cluess on the cheap. Cluess, sensing the blood of an injured animal hires agent for the first time in his career at age 60. He senses St. John's is both desperate and not to be trusted.
Yes, we are desperate. Cluess has won a lot of meaningless games at all levels but has never won anything anywhere. His teams, when they lose, regularly give up 80-90 points per game. A defensive maven he is not. He kisses a lot of local ass to get their second best players. He relies on transfers and even settled for Norvel Pelle, a Lavin flunky.
Please tell me this is all a bad dream not repeating itself.

P.S. never ever have faith in any coach endorsed by a so called Maven. It has never ended well.

I think Cluess would have been ok if given a real shot. Going in with no roster. Otherwise agree with the rest of your post.

Yeah, from all I’ve heard, this was not planned. Cragg expected Mullin back next year, then the impasse. I think people are making up their own narratives at times to get fired up. Would you be fired up if you found out that when Cragg made the statement that Mullin was the coach a week ago that it might have been the case and an argument ensued after that that lead to this all going down? Just saying Marillac, you’re making up your own pseudo-facts without knowing how it all unfolded. I don’t think Cragg had much more time than the past week or two to work on this.

Will Cluess be able to recruit? Will he be able to win without having better players than his competition like he had at all his previous and current stops?

I don’t get why all the Cluess hate. I think this is a great hire. The last 2 coaches we hired were all sizzle and no steak. They both obviously didn’t work out. Now we may possibly get a guy who by all accounts is a very good in game coach who has done nothing but win and people hate it? He’s not a flashy hire by any means, but who cares?

He’s 60 yes, but Coach K is 72. If he lasts 12 years it’d be more than the tenure of our last 2 coaches combined by far. The one concern I have is recruiting. I think you have to put great recruiters by his side at this level. But if you get him players he will win.

Who has a better idea than Cluess? I see a bunch of people upset but no solutions.

If the money for Hurley is not there then it's not there. We can't afford Mullin's two year buyout, Hurley's buyout, and then likely the $3 million a year he'd require. One year from now things would be different since Hurley's and Mullin's buyouts would be much lower. So what could we have done? Extend Mullin? No thanks.

This being bad for the Big East is BS. We're not competing with ASU in the open market. We are trying to poach their coach, while also needing to pay millions more in the two buyouts.

Not sure what some of you expect, but I have not seen any plausible alternatives and just a bunch of finger pointing.
