Cluess

The roster is taking hits like Rocky Balboa.
Got to stop the bleeding or we're in the re-set nightmare of 2014-15 deja-vu all over again.
Time for Bobby to bravely announce at the ASU dinner that he's coming to St. John's, or wax poetic about his plans next year as the Sun Devils coach, or Tim Cluess, with a solid staff, to begin the rebuild at St. John's.
Let's get one or the other going, like now.
Nada time for 'national searches'.
Blame whomever, but face reality and hire 'the' guy.
For all of you still pining for Hurley after the Cluess hire is official, had he come here there is no way in hell he was going to be here very long. A couple of good years and one of the big state schools would have offered him double what we’d be paying him and he’d be gone. I’m not even talking about a couple of great years, I’m talking about a couple of years like he had at ASU. I’d rather the program take a little longer to be rebuilt, but be secure in the knowledge that the coach isn’t going anywhere.
I'm with you Monte. Well said. Thanks.

If Cluess is the best we can do after firing a legend then this President looks like a horse's ass. We know that Oliva is an incompetent sneak but this program returning to square one after 4 painful years of watching Greg St. Jean coaching and now receiving accolades from the players tells us how far removed Mullin was from nuts and bolts. The nuts are still running the asylum and the players are bolting. Our level of incompetence has reached a new level.
It's not done yet...
I feel like George Plimpton trying to coax more personal info from Will Hunting. "A little more", a little more". So, a little more please. Or I will just post that there is "more to come", which there is.

I think Cluess is a good coach. However, he is a 60 year old and I just don't see him sticking around for the long term rebuild this is. We have become a perennial rebuild but next year is already a loss. This is the problem we have over and over. Three or four years odds are he retires and here we go again.

by that do you mean the Hurley negotiations?
He means the contract hasn’t officially been signed yet (of course) and ASU/Hurley hasn’t announced anything.

More vaguery and ellipses from him to give the illusion that he knows something that he doesn’t.

If Cluess is signed he will say that ASU came up with too much $. If by some MIRACLE a bag man delivers in the 11th hour he will say he knew it all along. This is why he avoid specific statements.

Again, I prefer Hurley but Bobby would also be 'gone' in 4 years, off to a bigger State school or Duke.

After watching 2 great defensive teams go toe to toe for the NC, I would prefer a coach who thinks defense is important. Cluess's teams run and gun, but, from what I have seen, don't defend. Virginia and the Red Raiders put on a show. It was really college basketball at its finest.

Marillac, I know you have a problem with Fordham, and I don't need you to spend time on my question, with your issues with him. Ease up!

I agree. Neither is a great fit. If these two names are all we got we have nothing.

FWIW, since Louie there has only been one coach that my gut told me was a good hire, and that was Fran. My gut tells me that Cluess is a good hire. I’m going with my gut.

“Great” ain’t walking through the door anytime soon. We’re going to have to settle for good-very good, which is still a whole lot better then 4 of our last 5 coaches.

great could actually walk through the door, but it won't happen because of a hypocritical SJU moral compass that gets a lot of run time on this board.

True. I would rather swing for a first time HC preferably an assistant who needs to prove something before finding an exit. Hurley would move to xyz state school in a couple years and Cluess I just don’t see him doing the dirty work needed. Long story short... we are screwed.

It will be nice to have a coach that actually teaches fundamentals, runs plays and helps kids develop and get better. I think he can be very successful with a pair of excellent recruiters. I think you need the whole package for this to work, which includes the recruiters. I like Hurley but I think this can work and would not be unhappy with Cluess. It would have been nice to put this in place 4 years ago and be up and running by now, but here we are again...

Everyone here knows my opinion on Cluess and I'm not saying this mean spiritedly. I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine (Nova fan) and he was surprised we were still coachless.

And I just got a fit of laughter imagining a scenario where Cluess knows we stuck out on Hurley and is playing hardball with Cragg as the rumors around the program swirl.

That would be so St John's.

BTW this is probably not happening, I have no information, I just got a kick out of thinking about it.

I’m not the most moral of guys, I can tell you that. But I would take a “good-very good” upstanding guy over a “great” sleazebag any day of the week. Even if it means a few less Ws. Besides, no matter how much we may want it and talk about it, Pitino ain’t walking through the door. Besides he already shot himself in the foot with his comment about demanding an apology from federal prosecutors before even considering the St. John’s job. He lost me right there.
