Cluess

Hurley's contract will require a buyout ($?), Mullin $4 mil., still paying Slice. Lots of $ before paying a HC.
Cluess buyout $ ?
With Hurley the buyout isnt going to cost the school anything and same with Mullins. The buyout isnt the issue. These have are known variables. Cragg doesn't make this move without knowing that

The unknown is if Hurley gets blowing away by major $ from Az State
Which makes the fact of Cragg being caught with his pants down that much more inexcusable. Negotiations start at 7 years for 21 mill. If you can’t comfortably pay that then don’t force Mullin out.
I agree on your contract numbers. Might be offered. Its radio silent on that front it seems. I'm thinking if AZ State comes up with 3.5 average then we have to come in closer to 3.75 and that's territory I just dont know if the school is going to go there but I think they should have been prepared to beforehand unless they have a legit backup plan and no diesrepect to the person being talked about now and really it's just me guessing but I dont know if this person was plan B. ( very well could have but I just dont see a power move like the one Cragg made to be followed not by something big )
If Cluess is the hire, fine. But why the rush to hire a guy you can get any time you want?
I'd say because we have to stop the roster from bailing. 'Time' is against us here.

Q: Which D1 teams have won their conference tournament every year for the past 4 years?
A: Iona.

Sign him and rally behind the hire.

Great points, Mike. I just think that 'big boat' has sailed. Yes, it's been 'radio silent', but got to wonder if ASU would allow Hurley to address the annual post season dinner, knowing he's got 1 1/2 feet out the door.
Seems like an ideal time to announce an extension to thundering applause.
Hope I'm wrong.
We shall see.

I understand that we have to pay Mullin for the last 2 years of his contract, but why would St. John's have to pay ASU or Iona anything?

Both Hurley and Cluess have 'reverse' buyouts that they owe the respective schools.
So, if we want them, we got to pay that for them.
The cost of the trade.

Why not just wait until midnight madness to hire one? Because recruiting has to be done...

Thanks, maybe i wasn't aware of this because as a 45 year old SJU fan i don't think we ever had a coach that another school was interested in knowing that Louie wasn't going anywhere.

Question for the board, has there ever been a SJU coach that left for another school?
First two years he will get a fee pass as they blame Mullin for lack of roster the first 2 years.

Cragg will be gone so probably won't have every Duke guard involved in search
Hey good job. You just said Duke guard and didn't mention the color of their skin !

Cluess is all meat and potatoes. No bullish from him. He will coach each kid hard. I think SJU deserves someone of his pedigree. Will he adjust his style to fit better a conference? Can he get talent?
Not that I am any expert. but you have to think he should be able to leverage the advantages he does not have at Iona: a national program, TV, Big East, TV. MSG, TV, bigger budget.
Very different to recruit a kid to the MACC. Not as many layers involved. It's a totally different animal here. Those advantages sometimes become disadvantages when you step up. The budget we have compared to others isn't enough, the facilities aren't nice enough, the player lounges are mediocre etc, the handlers, the favors etc... obviously the staff is key. I'm sure we will have a strong local presence. Arbitello campaigning for Cluess makes me laugh. He is smart and calculated. Also usually stays anonymous behind his quotes. Could he be a candidate?
A candidate for an assistant position? I highly doubt that, but ya never know.

We may not have to pay, but there may be buyout clauses in the contract that the coach wouldn't want to/ or be able to pay himself so the contracting school would pick it up

If a Cluess announcement happens, it should come with a footnote of new seatbacks at Carnesecca.

Just hire Cluess already and put us all out of our misery. Tired of all this.

So worst kept secret turns out to be Tim Cluess will be the next coach of @StJohnsBBall . I think this will be a tremendous hire to reunite a disgruntled fan base and get #sjubb back on winning track .Were getting a real solid basketball man with St.Johns roots. Back the hire!

If his track record over the last month is any indication then cluess will be Iona’s coach next year.
