Cluess
Cluess is all meat and potatoes. No bullish from him. He will coach each kid hard. I think SJU deserves someone of his pedigree. Will he adjust his style to fit better a conference? Can he get talent?
He got talent everywhere he’s been. Granted he’s stepping up another level, but he’s always stepped up and succeeded. A lot will depend on who his recruiters are, but I trust he’ll surround himself with the right people. And Cragg will also be involved in the hiring of the staff.

Excellent questions linx that none on this Board know the answer to.
I'm hopeful but we shall see.

I like Cluess as a hire. Agree, he’s extremely qualified and wouldn’t miss a step. Hire a few great recruiters and get right to work. He’s not easily outcoached and does run a fun style of basketball. It isn’t the stuff that Mullin ran. If it’s Cluess, we won’t be ignoring local kids and gyms at all. I’m happy with a hire like Cluess if that’s the case. He has a 69%+career college win percentage.

Not that I am any expert. but you have to think he should be able to leverage the advantages he does not have at Iona: a national program, TV, Big East, TV. MSG, TV, bigger budget.

Hurley's contract will require a buyout ($?), Mullin $4 mil., still paying Slice. Lots of $ before paying a HC.
Cluess buyout $ ?

Yes Monte, I agree. One would think Cragg will be on top of all major decisions going forward now, including the composition of the Staff.
Hoping for both Borman and Hsu...

Somebody mentioned Jay David as an assistant candidate as well. Anybody have any endorsements for him?

This isn’t directed at you CD, but I never understand the big concern about getting talent here. We’ve always gotten talent here. Hell even Norm got talent here, and his hands were tied with the budget he was given and the kind of kids he was allowed to recruit. The last staff was disfunctional and shorthanded and they got talent here. Getting talent here is not something that ever concerns me.

The answer is no and NO ONE knows what is going on
( sorry I think I double posted - my bad )

Oh wait, drumroll, news flash, real fake news. The Solution to this anguish on this board and the suffering we endure as St. John’s fans...
Let’s drop down to Division 2 or wait, better yet, to Division 3
Cheaper and less stress when we lose
Or
No hold off, let me think
let’s treat our basketball program like we did our football program.
No program is the best solution.
We could make better, much better, use of Alumni Hall, say
Convert it into a state of the art
FOOD COURT
and create a culinary college -
The Red Storm Culinary College of
St. John’s University
With branches in Queens, Staten Island, Rome, Madison Square Garden
AND
On 18th Avenue in Bensonhurst
AND
Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.
And our Food Court - formerly Alumni Hall - will have all the great franchises represented to include
Listen now and to be politically correct, a new chain called “Sunday’s” that is
ONLY opened on Sunday to balance our CHIK fi let
Where I hear they only sell right wings
They leave all these chickens running around with only
Left Wing’s, it’s sad
Especially for those of us who like animals...
But with no basketball in Queens -
Well
Save us the time and stress of still another Mahoney, Roberts, Franchilla, Jarvis, Lavin, Mullin - did I leave anybody out - transition!

So screw it, no more basketball. Forget blue bloods. Well have no blood and no more bloody crises with this program.

And hold on, one more thing. Only one.
I already miss the team and the chance to root and dream of 20 win seasons.
So you know what.
Forget what I posted
And I promise, take the oath to make us great again
I won’t bitch and moan. I won’t post. I won’t stress.
I will just calmly wait and let this play out.
As posted no one knows for sure even though half of us act like we know ahead of time
Hmmm

Maybe I will even give Mike Cragg- with his stellar background - a chance. Maybe he actually knows more than we do. Than I do.
Hmmmn
Okay then... let’s remain in division 1!

And give it another day.
After all, worthwhile food courts cannot be built in a day even if we have a campus in Rome...
All the best
Go Cragg!
Go LJ and your teammates!
Go Mack and other possibilities!
Go Storm!
And finally and despite it all -
Go St. John’s!

Very different to recruit a kid to the MACC. Not as many layers involved. It's a totally different animal here. Those advantages sometimes become disadvantages when you step up. The budget we have compared to others isn't enough, the facilities aren't nice enough, the player lounges are mediocre etc, the handlers, the favors etc... obviously the staff is key. I'm sure we will have a strong local presence. Arbitello campaigning for Cluess makes me laugh. He is smart and calculated. Also usually stays anonymous behind his quotes. Could he be a candidate?

Cluess buyout $ ?
With Hurley the buyout isnt going to cost the school anything and same with Mullins. The buyout isnt the issue. These have are known variables. Cragg doesn't make this move without knowing that

The unknown is if Hurley gets blowing away by major $ from Az State

Is that common practice for an AD to have so much say in which assist coaches are hired? I always thought that the head coach picks his staff, which is then vetted by AD.

Which makes the fact of Cragg being caught with his pants down that much more inexcusable. Negotiations start at 7 years for 21 mill. If you can’t comfortably pay that then don’t force Mullin out.

You're right, but this is a different situation I think. And Cluess is moving up 1 level+, is coming in late and would need ACs with great contacts for high major recruits / transfers. Plus,Cragg owns this whole book.
We shall see.

No, but we have all the leverage here because nobody else wants Cluess.

If Cluess is the hire, fine. But why the rush to hire a guy you can get any time you want?

I'm hearing chatter about Grasso re-joining him and effectively becoming HCIW. Complete conjecture but is that a possibility?
