Cluess

Considering the other names this was the best we could hope for. Hopefully some of you will give him more time than you gave last 2 coaches and hopefully he won't require as much time as some of you were ready to give Norm. Cluess getting hired, so bitching about it won't do anything so try and get behind him. Most of you got what you wanted and last 2 coaches were let go. And remember considering the names I can only imagine the names that will get thrown out there in 3 years if Cluess does struggle.
I hope this isn't true. If it is wake me up in 3 years when we start our next rebuild. This is a terrible decision
Scheyer will still be available

Why? This would be a terrible hire for St. John's if they want to have a nationally respected program. He is a no name outside of NY. You thought players knew nothing about Chris Mullin, well they will no even less about Cluess!
This is why you end up with Jarvis or Lavin or Mullin.

You win the press conference. You make a splash.

But the grinder. The guy who works non-stop to get the program better, who eats breathes St. John's basketball? That's a guy like McKillop or Beilein or, yes, Cluess.
Terrific post Main Man

Guy is a winner at every level and will be at the Big East level.

I cant wait to revisit this thread in 2 years and get a chuckle over all the moronic messages posted in.

This guy is born coach. After 20 years of Mullin, Lavin, Norm, Mahoney, Jarvis and Fran, this would be an exciting era for SJU basketball.

No need to win press conferences, only games.

A little something I like to do before every hire. Our firing schedule is more predictable than the Olympics.

Who do you guys like as a coach in 2023? Tre Jones?

Hire Cluess and we lose 20 games next year, and it wouldn't surprise me if we lost 20 the next year too. Will root for the team no matter who is hired, but I will probably start a fire Cluess thread the day he is hired. Zero faith in his ability to lead this team to the top of the BE and into the top 25.

Lineup the resumes of Cluess and Jarvis and tell me whose looked better at the time of hire.

First two years he will get a fee pass as they blame Mullin for lack of roster the first 2 years.

Cragg will be gone so probably won't have every Duke guard involved in search

You disagree with me, and that's ok, but I have never referred to someone's opposing position as moronic, and quite frankly it is uncalled for. If I am wrong I will gleefully admit it.

Dude, I just want a full time coach.

Fran was full time before his ego killed his career.

Jarvis was for a year or two before ego also killed his career.

Norm tried, god bless him.

Lavin was in year one and then cancer, etc.

And Mullin.... Jesus, Mullin just was NEVER into it.

Just give me a damn coach.

Hurley seems like he's one. Cluess is definitely one.

I could care less about revisiting Mike "Belmont Park" Jarvis. His lack of institutional control embarrassed this program.

Tim Cluess is a basketball junkie, a New Yorker, and most importantly A WINNER

But it will be the same guys that said you couldn't do that for Mullin

Seton Hall hired Willard after three years at Iona. While it would certainly be underwhelming, Cluess would be a solid hire if we bring in guys like Hsu and Borman to fill out the staff.

I just looked up Cragg on Zillow.com and the most recent transaction has him owned by a Robert Hurley of Tempe, Arizona.

#AmateurHour
#Thanksfortheraise

But all is not lost. At least Cragg was able to elevate Jon Scheyer’s rep. Nothing screams up-and-comer like being rejected by St. John’s!

I just don't see getting rid of Mullin to hire Cluess.

Cragg would have almost certainly anticipated that ASU would ante up to try and keep Hurley. I have a hard time believing he wouldn't of had the money needed to get this done beforehand. Harder time believing Cluess is his Plan B.

Really confused right now as to what is happening.

I think this is a good take.

By chance Cluess bring in those two, I'll still be a bit reluctant of the hire. I've already gone on record why I fear this hire could have quite a few folks up in arms in another 3 or 4 years, and I still stand by it until proven differently.

I'm on board with Cluess, if this goes down. Perhaps not a flashy hire, but that stuff doesn't really matter at the end of the day. Just give me a coach that is all in.

Sidenote, I was an AC for a PSAL HS that played St. Mary's one year when they were coached by Cluess. I think we lost by 12 or so, but we could've easily lost by 30. Was thankful for Cluess not embarrassing us at the time.

Pitino

Hard to believe we pushed out and probably alienated an SJ legend to end up here.

Was definitely time for shakeup or full blown change but this is not where we should have ended up.

If Cluess is hired, can the fan base rally behind him?
There is literally no chance. His teams don’t D-up or board like many want. His teams jack threes and play one-on-one more than Mullin.

We will also suck next year if he is hired and are looking at a three-year rebuild. When have we ever been patient for that?

Hurley is the only coach that can unite 90% of the board 4 years from now, but that ship has sailed. The Cluess era has begun.
I still want Hurley and I'm not saying that Cluess is the '2nd Coming' but Iona last year was 2nd in 3-pt %, 1st in 2-pt %-age, 1st in FT %, 9th in DRB, 1st in ORB, 1st in TRB, 5th in Assists, 6th in Steals, and 6th in Blocks...with a roster in which 9 guys played at least 10 MPG.
If he can convert that to the BEC, I'd take it.
Not bad.
