Cluess

Total speculation, but not buying it just yet. Thinking for the moment maybe using this as more of a lever to expedite Bobby decision.

Yes you want to get a coach in place quickly, but irrespective of whether Cluess is a good or bad candidate, he's definitely not a candidate you need to rush for. He'll be there, especially for this job. Makes him easy chip to use up front if Cragg is playing chess.
Cragg isn’t playing chess. It’s too late for that. He surrendered all of his leverage before Mullin even handed in his “resignation.” A savvy negotiator would have put out misdirection off the record in the form of interest in other coaches like Alford, Matta, Beard, etc. on Monday. It’s silly to think he’s trying to gain some leverage at this point.

He’s either doing his due diligence by securing secondary options or he completely mishandled everything and is going to plan B. There is no gray area here due to the way He made Hurley his target.
If Cluess is hired, can the fan base rally behind him?

My first choice is Hurley and I'm glad that St. John's is trying to make that work, but if it doesn't then so be it. Pitino should be out after yesterday's news. I'd assume the school has done their due diligence and would pass if he's too big a risk.

Under these circumstances, Cluess seems like a great hire and personally the one I would go with. He definitely deserves a chance and our full support. After he is hired, any initial negatively would be unwarranted and only hurt St. John's.
Heck if you are a St. John's fan anyone hired deserves our full support including Schyer. There are no sure things in either direction.

Be careful with logic, JC3, you’re going to get yelled at. Cluess whole family and PR machine is on this board.
I know that you & Marillac are co-founders of the Anti-Cluess Club, RSR2 but that was funny. Thanks.
Pitino and Hurley are the heavy favorites on the Board.
But I think Pitino is a fantasy and Hurley looks like a long shot at this point.
In addition to Cluess and Scheyer, I've got no clue who else on Cragg's list.
But I'm sure he'll make the best choice from his remaining targets.
Let's hope.
I will keep my fingers crossed with you for the best possible outcome. And will gladly eat crow if it means NCAA tournaments.

We may not agree on our next coach but I hope we all can agree on this board being a trip and it being a far superior way of occupying my time than a typical day of work.
A positive spin on this board in this week with this decision of significance is simply this:

WE ALL CARE ABOUT ST. JOHNS BASKETBALL; THATS EXACTLY WHY WE ARE FRENETIC; WE ARE EXTREMELY TIRED AND FRUSTRATED BY THE REALITY OF THE PAST DECADES; AND WE WANT A GOOD COACH WHO COACHES AND RECRUITS; SO WE CAN JUST ENJOY THE GAME AND OUR TEAM
PS - no one is going to stop following the Red Storm; we will get over this transition; and hopefully Mike Cragg makes a stellar choice of coach and becomes the well respected AD we all hope he is.
Amen

Exactly right. Cluess will be there no matter what. Everyone knows he'll take the job. Hope Cragg is exploring all the options.
That'd be my guess. Not a lot of downside to dancing with Cluess right now. Not just a lever for Bobby but any other coaches who might have a toe in the water that you want to get in or out.

You might end up hiring Tim Cluess, and he might end up being a great hire. But I don't think you leave Duke, decide to take rebuild job at SJU, move on from a program legend ~8 months on the job as AD, and then replace that program legend with the coach at Iona within 48 hours. That wouldn't totally add up.

Any fish not cooked for a couple of days starts to stink. I'm sure Iona is contemplating how to increase him and require a buyout or some poison pill that any suitor would need to swallow. They'd only have to do this once for Tim, since in 4 years when we hire a new coach he will be too old for consideration.

At least until we are 0-5 in conference.

Not my first choice.

But to dismiss his success at every stop over the course of 25+ years is silly.

It has been shared the SJU has no money to pay top dollar for a coach, but if Cragg said he came here to make a national program then we need to find a way. If SJU could offer $3million/year (Cooley is making), the program becomes competitive, team starts to win, then revenue would increase. Why is everyone assuming that Cluess will be the hire and the SJU might just say screw it, lets go get someone for $3 million?

Depends on the schedule and how we did in OOC portion of the schedule.

I typically go turncoat at 0-3.

Why? This would be a terrible hire for St. John's if they want to have a nationally respected program. He is a no name outside of NY. You thought players knew nothing about Chris Mullin, well they will no even less about Cluess!

One year at Suffolk, several at D2 CW Post and then leading the MAAC teams doesn't scream to me he's the right guy for Big East and SJU

Coming from Duke and knowing what it takes to get to that level (not saying we are) but I'm sure he see's the value that a coach like Coach K brings to the table and what we need. To give someone (Cluess) a chance, makes absolutely no sense to me.

Get that contract signed and get him over the Throgs Neck Bridge and in a sit down with LJ and Mustapha ASAP.
Those 2 guys will thrive in Cluess' high octane offense.

Considering the other names this was the best we could hope for. Hopefully some of you will give him more time than you gave last 2 coaches and hopefully he won't require as much time as some of you were ready to give Norm. Cluess getting hired, so bitching about it won't do anything so try and get behind him. Most of you got what you wanted and last 2 coaches were let go. And remember considering the names I can only imagine the names that will get thrown out there in 3 years if Cluess does struggle.

There is literally no chance. His teams don’t D-up or board like many want. His teams jack threes and play one-on-one more than Mullin.

We will also suck next year if he is hired and are looking at a three-year rebuild. When have we ever been patient for that?

Hurley is the only coach that can unite 90% of the board 4 years from now, but that ship has sailed. The Cluess era has begun.

This is why you end up with Jarvis or Lavin or Mullin.

You win the press conference. You make a splash.

But the grinder. The guy who works non-stop to get the program better, who eats breathes St. John's basketball? That's a guy like McKillop or Beilein or, yes, Cluess.

I hope this isn't true. If it is wake me up in 3 years when we start our next rebuild. This is a terrible decision

Pitino probably would have, and I was in 10% with Hurley so I am happyish. At least not Scheyer which would have united 95% in the wrong way.
