Cluess

I don't think you realize what you did there.

Sun Devils baby.

Someone has to prove to me that Cluess can't coach. He seems to have succeeded everywhere he's been. He's been criticized for recruiting transfers to fill his roster with players. So? How many 5-Star kids stay 4 years these days? The lack of a defensive focus is the only thing that troubles me.
I'm trusting that Cragg knows what he is doing.
He gets better players than his competition at all his stops. That won’t happen at St. John’s. He can’t tap his resources for enough high major talent to fill a Big East roster.

There were 39 d-3 teams in the country when he was at Suffolk and 20 of them are awful. He has the opportunity to take a handful of area JUCO jobs any year so his timing was no accident. A coach with his access to players at CW Post is just unfair. He also brought over players from Suffolk. He inherited a 21-win tournament team from Willard at Iona (and Machado and Michael Glover). Then he was gifted Momo after we were prohibited from signing him.

He’s never built a team like he’d have to do here.
Don't most very good and winning coaches "get better players than (their) competition at all (their) stops."?
Cluess would continue to do that at St. John's. He is well-respected and well-liked by many prominent NY Metro HS and AAU coaches, and at St. John's he would be able to target the high 3* kid and the 4* kid off-radar at Iona.
Plus, I'm betting Cragg will encourage Tim to hire the likes of Borman and Hsu to complement his Staff.
At this point, I'm antsy like the players.
We need a coach. ASAP.
I highly doubt Hurley is coming back to the NY Metro.
Too bad, but it is what it is.
Hire the next best option by tomorrow.
I'll support whomever Cragg picks.
Let's do it.

I’m just trying to have some fun while we wait. I support any coach we hire longer than anyone so I gotta get my licks in now. Plus I’ve had too much caffeine today.

Cluess makes this search dare I say failure proof. He won’t be getting us to any Final Fours but we should dance somewhat regularly.

Hurley isn’t dead yet obviously and there are a million details to iron out if he were to accept a position here ($ for camps, a weekly show in season, incentives, etc.), but he isn’t leaving.

We won't dance regularly unless Cragg moves us into a conference like the MAAC..

I just want the best guy we can get in here...now.
Never had much 'pazienza' as they say in Italian.
Lol.

Disagree. It’s disappointing because the Mets fan in me always wants a homerun hire, but that’s just not realistic here anymore. But Cluess is a slight improvement. I hope he keeps St. Jean and adds Borman and Hsu.
We are hiring a 60 year old MAAC coach and paying Iona 7 figures to have that privilege. Kill me now.
And he'll be starting from scratch considering our current (and ongoing) exodus of players.

Just think: a little over a week ago we had a coach who did everything he said he would do, improved every year, won 20 games, got us in the dance and is considered an SJU great. He loved SJU and was not here for status or to use the school as a stepping stone. We had 3 quality BE players returning (Simon, Figs and Heron). We had a decent PG coming with Cam Mack, plus Tabor the next year. Some quality transfers like Manuel. We had something resembling a bench in Roberts and Williams. We would have been contenders next year. Plus there are now some transfers on the market who have become unexpectedly available.

But our asinine fanbase had to run another coach out of town with a constant vigil of social media vitriol and harassment. The same fanbase that does the same thing every 4 years. The fanbase that drew ire from Shamorie and Cam Macks mother twitter just recently. Why? Now we have NOTHING. And we're staring IONA in the face to come help us. All we had to do was leave well enough alone.

Be careful with logic, JC3, you’re going to get yelled at. Cluess whole family and PR machine is on this board.
I know that you & Marillac are co-founders of the Anti-Cluess Club, RSR2 but that was funny. Thanks.
Pitino and Hurley are the heavy favorites on the Board.
But I think Pitino is a fantasy and Hurley looks like a long shot at this point.
In addition to Cluess and Scheyer, I've got no clue who else on Cragg's list.
But I'm sure he'll make the best choice from his remaining targets.
Let's hope.
I will keep my fingers crossed with you for the best possible outcome. And will gladly eat crow if it means NCAA tournaments.

We may not agree on our next coach but I hope we all can agree on this board being a trip and it being a far superior way of occupying my time than a typical day of work.

You do know Mack and Simon was probably gone if Mullin had returned, right? Tabor was only a verbal commit, and word was he would also eventually reopen his recruitment. I still believe Figueroa will return based on who we bring in, and Tabor can be re-recruited.

Mullin is supposed to come back and talk to the players, if I remember correctly. You can catch Mullin at the airport before he departs and head back out to Cali once he's done speaking with the players.

Count me as one that does not want Cluess. There is a reason he has not ever been approached by a team in a major conference. The ABC's of me...Anyone But Cluess!

Total speculation, but not buying it just yet. Thinking for the moment maybe using this as more of a lever to expedite Bobby decision.

Yes you want to get a coach in place quickly, but irrespective of whether Cluess is a good or bad candidate, he's definitely not a candidate you need to rush for. He'll be there, especially for this job. Makes him easy chip to use up front if Cragg is playing chess.

If Cluess is hired, can the fan base rally behind him?

My first choice is Hurley and I'm glad that St. John's is trying to make that work, but if it doesn't then so be it. Pitino should be out after yesterday's news. I'd assume the school has done their due diligence and would pass if he's too big a risk.

Under these circumstances, Cluess seems like a great hire and personally the one I would go with. He definitely deserves a chance and our full support. After he is hired, any initial negatively would be unwarranted and only hurt St. John's.

Exactly right. Cluess will be there no matter what. Everyone knows he'll take the job. Hope Cragg is exploring all the options.
