Cluess
If Cluess is the next coach, do you think Hsu & Borman will be part of his staff?
Maybe they can join the next staff when Cluess is fired in four years.

The chances of our fans being patient while a 60+ year old coach rebuilds are next to zero. One-on-one ball, living and dying with three pointers, no defense or rebounding. Good times ahead once Hurley is done tap dancing on Cragg’s face.

It's troubling that like Mullin, Cluess seems to focus on chucking 3's and praying while playing poor defense. Skilled coach but IMO too old...I'd rather take a chance on a guy like Scheyer being more balanced with more energy. Cluess just seems like a grandpa figure...nothing wrong with that, but can he relate to kids these days? I want a coach and not a friend, but at the same time it's a concern. We don't need more of the same e.g. no rebounding, chucking 3's, poor defense. We need more balance and we need someone who can get big men to come here and be a big part of the team. Scheyer would have to come with Hsu and Borman.

A couple of thoughts:

1. The fact that Cluess left St John's should be irrelevant. Rutledge left St John's as well and came back to be an assistant coach or many years
2. The fact that Cluess never won an NCAA game is a joke. Coming out of a 1 bid league, his teams were always seeded 13th or worse. His team would have to pull a major upset to win an NCAA game.
3. While Cluess has not coached at the major college level, he has a lot of coaching experience and has won wherever he has been

While he's not my first choice, I think he would do well at St John's. I'm sure he's chomping at the bit for it. He would be coaching at the major college level, would almost triple his income and would cut his commute in half. A great way to finish his coaching career

He would certainly need savvy, aggressive recruiters imo.

I don’t follow recruiting as closely as some on this board so genuinely asking. Does Cluess enjoy recruiting? Though Iona was rarely recruiting the same kids as us, I can’t even remember a mention of him ever out recruiting. Grasso was everywhere for Iona.

Not my first choice, but “beggars can’t be choosers” as the old saying goes. He fits 2 major criteria that we haven’t had here in a long time:

1) he can actually coach(and has won everywhere he’s been)

2) By all accounts he’s a hard worker

The only other coach we’ve had here since Lou that met both those criteria was Fran. Additionally this will not be a stepping stone job for him, as it likely will be for Hurley or any young coach. Not saying that I wouldn’t take Hurley over Cluess, I would. Just saying that I’m starting to warm to the idea provided, as Paultz stated, that he surrounds himself with a strong recruiter(s) and staff.

Cluess makes sense, good coach , a promotion , does not have to take up roots and NYC kids know him. He will have the support of his family and he will want the job.

Give Bobby until the end of today, and if you can't reach an agreement then sign Cluess first thing tomorrow morning.

Think Cluess situation has been covered in this thread. Quite a few positives, with his defensive strategy his weakest attribute. Another positive which wasn't mentioned is that he already resides in Nassau County, and doesn't want to leave. Bringing in out-of-towners can be problematic when they discover the real estate prices, NY taxes, traffic, etc.

There is no reason Cluess can't bring in an assistant who can concentrate on defense, along with two other assistants, each able to coach and recruit. His family has a SJU pedigree second to none.

That's been my working 'premise'. I'd expect Cragg to be heavily in on AC appointments with all new HCs except Hurley.
I suspect that Hsu and Borman are at the top of Cragg's wish list of ACs, and Hurley has also heard their names from Cragg.
That's my hope.

We are hiring a 60 year old MAAC coach and paying Iona 7 figures to have that privilege. Kill me now.

Be careful with logic, JC3, you’re going to get yelled at. Cluess whole family and PR machine is on this board.

If Cluess hires Borman and Hsu, and retains St Jean. I wouldn't mind that staff at all.

I believe St Jean still being on staff might help keep current players and continuity

You might be right, Seattle but that'd be tough to take. Maybe Cluess can teach him to be a coach. Gotta laugh.
Seriously, betting GSJ likely goes back to the NBA very soon.
I think the roster stops gushing once we have an HC and I'm sure Cragg will act fast at this point.
He's been waiting for Hurley. I don't think he can afford to wait much longer.

If this happens, I'm going to be one of the few guys left on this board. I'd love this hire.

We've got to be Providence or Seton Hall, before we can become Villanova, and this move would get us on that track.
I played sports for years and have been watching sports for a very, very, long time and this isn't actually true. If a fortune teller told me that we'll soon be VIllanova after being Providence or Seton Hall, then I'd immediately sign up for it. But the notion we have to be those teams before we're Villanova isn't written anywhere, as well as it being a misnomer.

The only defensive strategy that really matters is outscoring your opponent, which means making key stops in crunch time. It's hard to have good defensive stats when you have short possessions.

I'd be all for this: Cluess as head coach, with GSJ staying on as coach in waiting.

I know that you & Marillac are co-founders of the Anti-Cluess Club, RSR2 but that was funny. Thanks.
Pitino and Hurley are the heavy favorites on the Board.
But I think Pitino is a fantasy and Hurley looks like a long shot at this point.
In addition to Cluess and Scheyer, I've got no clue who else on Cragg's list.
But I'm sure he'll make the best choice from his remaining targets.
Let's hope.
