Christian Jones

Please people, this is killing me. Not Minland, Mineland nor Minland. It's Charles Minlend.
You sound like Moose. Every time a poster writes Woods instead of Wood he corrects him.LOL

I was waiting for Minefield.

Don't you mean Minniefield the 6'8 juco from some years back? :) Hope I have that spelling right or I will get castigated, or is it castrated? :)

Actually, it's Mike Minnifeld ... or do you have a castration wish and purposely misspelled it? :eek:hmy:

 It's actually spelled Menniefield.

Ouch! (as the metaphorical scalpel slices through). I stand corrected.

After a 13-hour workday, I took the misspelled name off a Website, one that was obviously incorrect. (Was wondering why only a couple of websites mentioned him; I now see that with the correct spelling, there are multiple websites that do.) Oh, well, at least I didn't misspell Mullin.

Sorry I brought it up! :) :) :) :) :)

You can tell it's summer. B)

Exactly! Between discussions about the misspelling of former (and in some cases irrelevant) ex-players; D'Angelo's height & how it will affect his draft status (it's what he'll do at SJU that I'm concerned with); and whether Christian Jones is 6'-6" or 6'-7" or 6'-8", it's summer talk and nothing more. Can't wait for the season to begin.

A real sleeper for St. John's could be Christian Jones. 6-7 forward is a hidden commodity. Really strong + skilled. Could be solid reserve.

Sounds real good but I just don't see him getting a lot of minutes next season. We are really deep at every position.

Big difference between "solid reserve" and "a lot of minutes". Last time we were "deep", Sean Evans got 12 minutes a gme, and Dele Coker 6. Not a lot of minutes. But even Coker had some solid appearances, and I'd consider him a soild reserve. Heck despite his limitations, would have LOVED to have had him one more year to plug in LAST season...

The best part is that if Jones becomes good it's money in the bank...we aren't relying on him and even if he plays awful it won't really hurt us that much. Hope the kid proves people wrong and loves the underdog role! If he turns out to be a hidden gem this team can go very far.

Off the bat, he probably won't see a lot of minutes next year. Due to their year of experience at the college level, Pointer and Garrett are going to have the immediate edge at the wing position. On top of that, you also have SF/PF players like Sampson and Sanchez joining the ranks. Not to mention, you have combo players like Bourgault, Wood, and Balamou in the mix for minutes.

This may wind up being the classic test of whether a player has the patience and willingness to get better year by year. Judging by the alarmingly high transfer rate the past couple years, that is becoming more rare in the college game. For all accounts, Jones is a phenomenal athlete whose game is a little raw at this stage. You combine his athletic ability with strong coaching and maybe you have a diamond in the rough by the end of his sophomore year or beginning of his junior year. That is the development of a young player.

Personally, I'm really excited to see the step forward in the games of Harrison, Pointer, Garrett, and Greene for next year. 2011-'12 was a tremendously difficult year for them seeing as how undermanned they are. They persevered through it and I'm sure are going to be the better basketball players for it. It's kind of funny to me how everybody has penciled players like Sampson and Sanchez in as the next big thing at STJ, but the fact of the matter is our core four players still here from last year are the ones with big time college experience. They've been through the battles and are going to be essential in teaching our new players what it is like to be in a tight NCAA game down the stretch.

I think a lot of playing time will reflect on how our players develop as scorers. Clearly we have a lot of athletes, so I think a solid hounding defense will be a given, regardless of which players are on the floor. If Christian Jones shows he can score consistently and make good decisions on the offense end of the game he will get playing time.

The same goes for Greene, Pointer et al. If they aren't reliable on the offensive end I think it will open the door for playing time for the newcomers. Pointer is just an incredible athlete, I really hope he was able to refine his offensive game this off season. He can be the most improved player.

Pointer is a great athlete but he needs to let the game slow down a lot. His biggest problem is he looks lost and confused when he has the ball in his hands and he rushes things.

Ideally, he's a slasher and moves towards the basket on a dribble drive or waiting for a pass to finish with a slam.

However the key things he had to work on from last year were ball handling and seeing the floor. He was very unsure of himself with the ball in his hands last year and this forced him to be out of control.

If he improved his ballhandling and confidence with the ball in his hands then I think he could big a big surprise.

Perhaps he will rec'd more playing time than we think Lavin saw something he liked Maybe just maybe he is a much
better defensive player and sees major mins

If he sees major minutes we have a huge problem as Amir, Sir Dom, Jakaar and Orlando should all be playing ahead of CJ.

jayvee.... what impressed you most when you saw Christian Jones play?
