Christian Jones

From his coach

“Christian Jones is a very good athlete who has improved his skill set tremendously,” IMG postgrad coach Loren Jackson told SNY.tv. “He is developing into a face-up four that can also play the wing position.

“Christian will eventually be a very good three-man.”

That quote I don't like. Doesn't sound like we are getting a power forward, but another Amir and Sir'Dom. How many three-men does one team need?

Could be that Lavin felt Christian was worth a gamble.

It's late in the day to get a quality 2012 recruit.

If he comes through, that's great. If not, we still have a great recruiting class and guys at the end of the bench , really, usually transfer.

It looks to me like a nothing lost gamble.

With all due respect to you, I will trust Lavin and whatever his plan is for all these players...

I trust Lavin, but it just leaves me scratching my head a bit.

But that is my problem, I didn't see the need for another 2012 recruit, and the gamble is we now have one less ship for a top flight 13 or 14 kid. We'll see how it plays out.

I am of the school that says, you never run out of ships. Someone good comes along, an open spot appears.

Where there's a Lavin, there's a way---- a way out!

Most likely scenario Otis is that he had some grade problems and just got qualified recently. He also probably opened some eyes this season at IMG. Not all to different than Kansas signee and one time SJU recruit Jamari Traylor. I hope he is qualified and think he probably is if we recruited him at this point in time in lieu of Wood.

You can't compare this kid to Traylor. Traylor was a top 150 player and highly recruited including offers from Indiana and Kansas. He didn't just appear on a couple programs radars in July. Oh and Traylor didn't qualify. I assume this kid is qualified at this stage otherwise I can't imagine the staff would offer.

Traylor came on late in his recruitment as well. I don't know his exact height, but I doubt he's 6'4". Look at the video of him next to Kamari Murphy. They look close in height to me, and Murphy a bit bigger than 6'4".I know Traylor didn't qualify, just meant his recruitment at img picked up late as teams jumped on. I doubt Lavin would have grabbed him now if he wasn't qualified.

Because Mr. jones is unknown and unranked by Rivals despite the fact that he has played at IMG which a high profile program, and was still open to recruiting 2 months before the start of classes then I tend to be less optimistic about his potential then those posters in this thread that sing Jones' praises - sight unseen.

I fear that Jones and Hooper are wasted scholarships. I hope I am proven wrong.

Hey, almost the entire Seton Hall roster were unknowns yet they still play in the big east. Just because we have one or two guys at the 10-13th spots on our roster doesn't make them "wasted ships". I just don't agree there. Can't have top 59 kids in those spots. Maybe this kid turns out to be a solid role player for us, or even a gem in a year or two. Who knows? Still need depth in second half of the roster and nothing is "wasted" IMO. One or two injuries or defections and we'd be at or below 10 active players.

 MCNPA,

I just checked SCOUT and ESPN and I did not find Mr. Jones name among the top 500+/- prospects for the class of 2012 on either site. ESPN did not have Jones listed among the to 40 prospects in the State of Florida. I am sure you will agree that IMG is a high profile program where it is difficult for a kid to go overlooked.

I hope Christian and Max Hooper prove me wrong.

Hooper definitely just a shooter. Doesn't mean he can't help us at all. We still need role players.

Maybe Lavin is doing the coach of IMG a favor for helping us in the past or maybe in the future

Yes this is a bit head scratching, but that's all. If you don't trust Lavin yet... well, then that speaks for itself. Anyways, the only thing i would be concerned about which i don't think is being brought up enough is how this affects the balance of scholarships for better or worse in the near future. Again, we don't know about hooper/walk-ons yet etc, but based on these past 2 classes, could we anticpate a huge Kentucky-like class in maybe 2-3 years? Again, I'm aware of the balance in regards to junior college/transfer players we've brought in recently but any thoughts or expansion on this? Kentucky is in a league of it's own obviously but who knows, maybe in a few more years st johns will be that school where 4-5 friends all in the top 100 say, hey lets win a title and go to st johns! ha

-Just an opinion

Wasted scholarships?

Is Felix Balamou a wasted scholarship as well? He's unranked by Rivals despite being the leading scorer at OSNA.

Some people must want Top 100 kids as their 12th and 13th guys on the end of the bench.

For as much praise as Rivals and ESPN get, they should be slapped silly for over-ranking so many kids as well.

You can realistically say that from probably the 70th ranked player on down, it's just a crapshoot ranking based on what they have seen.

Trey Burke was ranked #142 by Rivals and ended up being arguably on of the top freshmen in the country.

I'll take my chances with Lavin and the staff's due diligence on these players over Rivals ranking every day of the week.

I trust our coach, and I don't think he would have just recruited a kid for the sake of filling a spot on the roster. Why don't we let time shake out the answers as to why coach got him. It will be interesting to hear Coach Lav's spin on it.

 Found this from 2010

Team Texas has switched things up a bit and because of that, Christian Jones is getting a chance. Missouri Valley, Conference USA and Mountain West teams are all on alert that the 6-foot-6 rocket ship of an athlete is a guy to keep an eye on. He's tough, gets rebounds and has quickness that is really tough to deal with in the paint. Not the most skilled guy, yet, he's got plenty of natural tools to work with.

we all know he isnt coming into start.love to know his true height but look at this kid. From a former gym rat you can tell the kid is loaded. Look for gods gift slash glover off thr bench. Lay the hammer down

That was 2yrs ago he is now bigger and more skilled

Listen to all of us cry babies... We are worried about taking a verbal from a strong-bodied athlete with a 40'' vertical leap this late in the recruiting period?... My, my, how have times changed for this program vs. three years ago.

I for one am going to sit back, relax and look forward to a season of watching all these young studs out-hustle, out-rebound and out-run other teams into the ground.

Enjoy it! Life is short.

I agree 100% with you BK. As I said on a previous post, if Coach Lavin had Norm's team ranked 15th in the country I very much am looking forward to what he and this staff can do with the abundance of talent they have on the roster now.

Also, if that article from 2010 has Jones at 6'6 he's probably a couple of inches taller now and has probably worked on his game. To me this is the perfect type of player to put at the end of your bench. By his junior year he'll probably be a solid contributor. Hammer to rock!!!!

Someone asked Nate on Twitter if he saw Jones at IMG. He said yes and compared him to Michael Gbinije who went to Duke before transferring.
