Chris Obekpa

Read a CO quote when discussing his shot blocking ability and he said it was a gift from God so maybe God's Gift had a lot to do with his commitment to St J's.  :)

Did I read some where that CO is only 16 years old? Is that possible?

According to IS8 he cant turn 18 through the next 12 months. So hell be 17 at the most throughout next season.
Thats if I interpreted the announcer correctly :S

That is correct, and I believe they are pretty strict with that.

Hmmm. Late signed, "stolen" from another team. 6'9 athletic big man, who'll be only 17 throughout his freshman year.

This must seem like Deja Vu to Steve Lavin! In July 2002, he stole a 6'9 underated C/F prospect - a young man who decommitted from another school when that coach left for a better job. Lorenzo Romar THOUGHT he was taking the kid with him from St. Louis to Washington. Then Steve got involved....

One can only hope - THAT 16-17 year old wasn't finshed growing. He finished his freshman year under Steve at 6'11, and is now a 7'0 NBA center - Ryan Hollins.

We will have two excellent Nigerian Freshman bball players at SJU next season.
1. CO; and
2. Sandra Udobi, who is the top women's recruit right now and is a 6 2 " forward.

Did I say I love Nigerians.

New video of Obekpa!

Amazing - of all the blocks in that video (what were there....12? 15?) All but one wasn't just blocked, but kept in play. And only one of THOSE wasn't blocked to a teammate or to himself. That's a Bill Russell/Bill Walton kind of talent. Couldn't help noticing the difference between his blocks, and those they showed in the highlight clips for Nerlens Noell during both the McD broadcast and the "announcement" show - the majority of THOSE were the showboat "thunder bllocks" that look spectactular, but simply go straight out of bounds, and BACK into possession of the opponent.

CO could be REALLY special, cause that's a skill most centers, even the most gifted of shot blookers, rarely master.

Funny you say that, because I was thinking the same thing every time I watch him. I never kept an exact #, but it seems like 80 to 90% of his blocks are kept in play. That is a very tough thing for a young kid to understand. An overzealous big swatting a shot into the stands has the same result as a deflection or kicked ball.

More CO , good stuff.

Happy days are here again !

My favorite may be at 0:50. CO springs back on defense to block the shot from behind. You don't regularly see that kind of hustle from a man his size. Especially in a non-league game. Gonna love that intensity in the BE.

I was looking at the Cincy board to see what they had to say about us stealing obekpa from them. They are saying that CO took an NIT team over a Final 4 team in Cincy. I don't wanna get ahead of myself hear, But I think we are top 25 material and better than Cincy. I'm so excited!!!!! 124 days until college hoops begins!!!!

Cincy a Final 4 team? Huh? I'll have some of what they are smoking....please.

Some of their (silly) fans act like they've been world beaters of late. I'm also one who believes we'll be the better team going into March.

They call us bottom feeders of the BE. I'm just sitting here saying put your money where your mouth is come BE play and all the sudden the "bottom feeders" are Surprising everybody. All this talk by their fans just make me wanna play them and beat them more and more...

What on Cincy's roster is better than ours? Their backcourt is their strength and it's quite good. Cashmere Wright and Sean Kilpatrick? I think Branch, Greene and Harrison will be every bit as good. Plus I think our frontcourt will, be stronger than theirs. They lost Dion Dixon and a huge piece in Yancy Gates. We are younger, but we are deeper 1 through 5. Even with our deficiencies, we finished ahead of them 2 years ago and split with them the last 2 years. They are having delusions of grandeur.

When Cincy fans call us bottom feeders I don't think they are taking into consideration the coaching change of Norm to Lavin. IMO college ft and bb programs are who the head coach is. Take Bama ft-under previous coach Mike Shula they were mediocre-now with Nick Saban have won 2 of last 3 NCs.

Something tells me SJU and Cincy won't face each other this season unless it's in the BE tourney. Played twice last year. The schedules will rotate unless I am mistaken.

For any of you fine folks interested and in the NYC-area: Chris Obekpa will be playing tomorrow night (Thursday) at Dyckman at 8:15PM. Try and get there early if you decide to go.

Every team plays every team at least once in the BE. Head to heads are decided based on preseason ranking and some traditional match ups plus what CBS/ESPN want for their marquee national broadcasts.

The Cincy fans thoroughly believe they are a Final Four team...I really think they woke up after being dropped on their heads and now they think they are a Duke/UNC/Kentucky/Cuse. Cincy is a good not great team. They had 1 very good year this past year but I will bet they don't make the sweet 16 again for some time. Sky is the limit for the Johnnies though.

Hostility and an over-inflated belief of their team. Not to mention, some sour grapes for losing out on Obekpa. I think they'll fare decently over the course of the season, but they're smelling themselves a bit too much.

I'd love to see Obekpa have a block party at their expense.

I was reading some of the Cinci comments and they are convinced that Steve is doing something dirty. Said he is the protege under one of the most dirtiest recruiters.
