Chris Obekpa

Ohhh yeah! how great is this? All the haters that said Lavin was done due to his illness or that he wanted to go back to cali, now look. He put together a very solid recruiting class that addressed our needs, and did it well. Smiling ear to ear right now. On ward and upward and welcome CO.

Have no fear.
Some 'fans' will still find something to complain about here. It's coming.

NY Post article.

Great news! And to think, a month ago the "insiders" were saying that we didn't have a chance with Obekpa. Glad to see we prevailed.

Absolutely no reason for the second part of your post but I guess this is what unfortunately is to be expected of you Boo.

I wasn't referring to anybody on this site. Plenty of time for us to all bicker later. Let's enjoy the good news!

Of all days to oversleep! Then it took an hour to read all the posts. Finally everyone playing their proper positions and huge potential all around. No more holes to fill and a team that will make us proud right from the point they're announced at every game. Thank you Steve and Chris for putting us over the top. Gonna have to do a lot of driving this year to make the games but it will be a labor of love. Let's go Johnnies!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on the pick up. He should be a good one.

My bad. I never expected to hear from you. Sorry for the slight. I agree with the other guys. Classy on your part.

I agree as well. I didn't get involved with the earlier (often heated) exchanges, but I gotta tell you that those Bearcat teams in the early sixties (Paul Hogue, Tom Thacker, Tony Yates, Ron Bonham, George Wilson, et al.) -- along with the St. John's teams from that same era (led by the recently deceased Leroy Ellis, Kevin Loughery, etc.) -- were what lit the fire for my passion for college hoops. As a result, I'll always have a warm spot in my heart for the U of C basketball.

Surprised nobody mentioned the most important Bearcat hoopster of them all, Sandy Koufax!..To me he was the best ever even though it was in a different sport.

Because we didn't. Things changed. Instead of being petty with potshots why not accept things change.

Steve did a great job of using the Nigerian/African connections to pull this off. Not just Felix, Gift and a great women's team recruit but the SJ Nigerian student community was introduced to Big Chris to make him feel more at home in making his decision. He hasn't turned 18 yet so he has incredible potential with our coaching staff.

Mostly stuff we've all heard before but I enjoyed the last para:

Put the pieces together and Monday was a huge day for Lavin and the Red Storm for a number of reasons. Not only did they land an immediate impact big man but they punctuated what can only be described as the best comeback story the recruiting world saw this season. St. John’s is very clearly heading in the right direction once again.

Per Zags (twitter):

I'm told #stjbb commit Chris Obekpa is qualified and does well academically in high school.

So much for the vicious Cincy rumor about CO' s handlers withholding his grades. LOL! Most Nigerian kids tend to do well in class as they have strong school work ethics.

for those of you that are espn insiders, there is an article on their website about our recruiting class....

Thanks 88grad .I trust that I can post an excerpt from the piece as there are some Interesting comments by Finkelstein about Obekpa and his offense:

"...there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about his potential on that end of the floor as well. He’s already an outstanding finisher, owning the strength and explosiveness to elevate through contact and finish in traffic. He also owns a naturally-soft touch that allows him to make open 12-footers with consistency. What he doesn’t have yet is a presence with his back to the basket. But given his size, touch and sharp learning curve, that should be something he can develop over the course of his college career...."

In between the semifinal and championship games at IS8 Obekpa spent the lion's share of his time huddled in conversation with God's Gift. Not hard to imagine the nature of the conversation.

Always heard he had trouble going to his left.

Other than Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel, no player in the 2013 class can block and alter shots like Obekpa. A cerebral defender with uncanny timing, the 6-foot-9 big man will do a tremendous job protecting the rim for the Red Storm, who are now positioned to be a legitimate factor in the Big East next season.

Did I read some where that CO is only 16 years old? Is that possible?

According to IS8 he cant turn 18 through the next 12 months. So hell be 17 at the most throughout next season.
Thats if I interpreted the announcer correctly :S
