Chris Obekpa

Anyone see Chris' latest tweets.

Someone should get in his ear and tell him that tweeting about his frustrations in summer school is not the best idea.

Doesn't Lavin ban the players from tweeting during the season? I guess starting in October?

Why stir up s*it? The kid is 17. He was answering some friend and ends it with LOL! Why not mention he is loving hanging with his new teammates and having fun! Did you like summer classes???

Great point and salient to the whole phenomenom of social media; w/o the ability to understand intent, nuance, intended audience etc. everything can be taken literally and misinterpreted.

No one's stirring anything up.

There's a reason they don't post during the season. I'm sure the staff isn't necessarily trying to muzzle them but they know that kids are kids and don't think of the ramifications some times.

It was just an observation that I made. Others with agendas that hate the program take things and run with them.

Imagine if twitter was around during the Abe Keita days. Oh my.

.@STJCoachLavin on Chris Obekpa "He's 1 of the more unique kid I've recruited bc of his ability 2 change the game w shot blocking prowess."

Just a note to stat geeks: Obekpa now leads the nation in shot blocks per game (5.33). He also leads in two other shot block categories Total blocks (64) and blocks per 40 minutes (8.39)

Blocks Per Game Leaders - Top 100 Qualified
RK PLAYER, POS TEAM Blocks per game
1 Chris Obekpa, F-C SJU 5.33
2 Jeff Withey, C KU 5.00
3 Jordan Bachynski, C ASU 4.50
4 Zeke Marshall, C AKR 4.33
5 Nerlens Noel, F UK 3.73

One uconn fan on their message board referred to Obekpa as a "10-armed Hindu God" on defense. I think it's obvious we have a pretty impressive player when other teams use such descriptions. I don't think Obeka will look back with that #1 rank this season.

It is becoming obvious that this was a very good and important get by the staff. If he stays 3 or 4 years, and continues to develop his offensive game, he could be one of the best all-around players we've ever produced.

Nice!

“@eamonnbrennan: Top 10: Impactful sophomoreshttp://es.pn/11uKxe9

If CO improves his offensive game, he could be our version of Gorgui Dieng

Kid has a ton of potential and will only get better with more minutes under his belt

Obekpa actually a better shotblocker than Dieng. A while before his offense is as good though. We'll see what Obekpa puts together on the offensive end in the offseason.

Yes but just because he's a better short blocker doesn't mean he's a better defender. He does still have room for improvement on other aspects of his defense as well as his offense generally.

Dieng might not be the best comparison for Obekpa. Dieng was a freaking giant and dwarfed Obekpa when they stood next to each other. Obekpa is 6'8 (probably 6'7), but has once-in-a-decade timing/instincts. He is much more mobile than Dieng and much less skilled. He's a 20-25 mpg guy. Sampson is a 30+ mpg guy.
