Chris Obekpa

would it be the worst thing in the world to have a player or 2 not qualify every year and then come back after a prep year? (sampson, wood) Can't hurt especially now with all of our depth.. kind of like a stable/early start to next years recruiting class

-just an optimistic view

No but also we shouldn't be giving out 8 schollies a year. I won't have to name who is responsible for that. 2-3 a year. Were almost there.

I dont believe we will ever be in a position again where we have to give out more than 5 ships in 1 season.
Hopefully this will never occur again.

With all due respect, please shut up about Norm Roberts!!! Seriously, grow up and move on!

You are actually the one that mentioned him. Moose never did.

Um excuse me. There is zero need to tell me to shut up and grow up.

Someone asked a question that I responded to and did not railroad anyone. You have been around here for awhile. I think you know who wants to stir the pot and just rip our former coach whenever his name comes up. Ignorance out of you is the reason a point like this needs to be driven home. NORM put LAVIN in the position of giving out so many ships. NORM put LAVIN in a position of taking risks first year, 2 of which did not work out.

So unless you want to add value to the question posed and the conversation, save the BS.

With all due respect where are the content and tone of your post coming from?
Absolutely no need for same.
Furthermore, Norm was not even named in the post.
Please think before you post.
Thank you.

"Mutombo did it, Wallace followed, why can't I do it... D is what I luv...#motivation"

Well if that quote doesn't say it all. Refreshing in an era where most "bigs" think they are wings and value chucking treys from the perimeter because they think just because they are big, they are Nowitski. Love to read that we have an extremely rare quality in our new big man in that he loves to play defense and that is his motivation. Anybody who thinks this kid won't have a big impact right away is fooling themselves. He'll come out to outwork his opponents on the defensive end which is exactly what we need.

It seems like a common theme with a lot of our recruits. Pointer, Amir, and Branch seem to have the mind set of "Let me guard their best guy". You just don't see that mentality, and we have a few of those types of guys.

Would love for this kid to come remotely close to following the career path of Hakeem "the Dream" Olajawon.

I started following bball in 1981 when I started at SJU.
That year Georgetown was the runner up to UNC in the NCAA Championship game.
They were the best defensive team I have ever seen as evidenced by their early demolition of a good SJU team at the Garden in early January 1982. I believe the score at halftime was 41-9 for the Hoyas. Their press was devastating, a work of art to witness.
With the 2 Smiths at forward and freshman Ewing being the back stopper it was very difficult to bring the ball across mid--court.
There may be a lot of similarities on our young team in the future. Dom, Amir and Jamal could be fantastic on the press with Obekpa as our back stopper/
Time will tell and I really look forward to watching this group play together.

Interesting part of if is that in my time as a SJU fan, we've never had a shotblocker in the post. I can't remember any. I remember playing against a ton. Obekpa can really change the entire complexion of our defense if he can impact like he does now. It will make games against lots of guys much different. Guys like Notre Dame's Cooley might have a bit tougher time burrowing in the paint and using the glass. Really intriguing to finally have a kid with his shotblocking ability after all these years.

You had to bring that game up? It was quite a surreal atmosphere as the crowd was sitting in stunned disbelief as Patrick Ewing threw down reverse alley-oop dunks. I remember feeling quite sickened. If memory serves that is the game Chris Mullin went scoreless.

I read on JJ about the possibility of a last minute snag in qualifying although I dont know thw specifics.

You're wild, '72. LOL

In this case, it's worth being a bit concerned.

Does anyone have any particulars as to exactly what the issue is and how much of chance there is that Chris and Felix might not play?

It has something to do with the NCAA making sure their school, OSNA, are in compliance. There is always the chance of them not being able to play when dealing with the NCAA.

Hopefully, this is dealt with and taken care of soon, and in our favor.

This is exactly why i can`t I can`t get to excited about recruits coming until i actually see them on the court.
Always gotta be some type of BS

Deja vu all over again. Very frustrating.
