Charles Minlend Jr.

This is very connected guy In North Carolina hoops circles. From what I read CM is really developing.

Now that he appears to be moving up the charts in terms of D1 schools interested, do you have any idea why SJU is not? The truth is, he may not be a high D1 player. Or it could be that his family favors a stronger academic institution.

Any son of Charles Minuend must be a good man. Best of luck to him.

It's a shame if we lose kids because they feel that St. John's is not where they want to be academically. I wish the school would do more to show people its strengths.

Not sure. I know Rutgers is really pursuing him & it appears he is a late developer. Good for him. He would play same position as Sampson, so I suspect that could be one issue. High academic desire is certainly another.

I do not believe his dad is a practicing pharmacist so the College of Pharmacy is not a likely draw for Jr., although the academics are high there at SJU. I wanted to chat with his father about it in Charlotte but the opportunity didn't present itself even though he was only a couple of rows behind me

More then likely Lavin doesn't need any more guards. As much as I liked Minlend's dad we really need to fill the forwards position.

He wants to Major in Engineering and Rutgers has an Engineering program while St Johns does not.

maybe we should get an engineering program then and our basketball program wouldn't implode so much

Thanks for that info. If he keeps moving up in interest, Villanova has a great engineering school, and academically fits the profile of a student like him. Man, it's really refreshing to find authentic student athletes like the Minlends. FWIW, his dad seemed to have a great time sitting with former Johnnies in Charlotte.

Manhattan College also had a good engineering program. At least they did 25 years ago. I assume it's still good. Better coach than Rutgers, too.

I heard M.I.T. was pretty good and he could really dominate at that level.

As a Catholic school, it's amazing to me that St. John's doesn't have a medical school and hospital. It's hard to imagine anything more consistent with the school's mission than providing low-cost health care to those in need. It's also hard to imagine that SJU doesn't have an engineering program being in New York City.

When I was at NYU I think they had a joint program with Stevens Institute of Technology -- pretty sure the guy in the next dorm room my freshman year took engineering classes there. St. John's should look into a similar arrangement.

$$$$$

A few years back on a thread I mentioned that I would like to see St. John's have an engineering school maybe combining with an existing one like NYU and Poly have done.

But as Ctstorm alludes, it would, cost a lot of money.

Do you realize that all Catholic Hospitals in Queens have closed. There used to be three that I can name immediately, St Johns, St Josephs, and Mary Immaculate. They are all gone now. St Vincents in Manhattan is also gone. I do not know all the reasons that went into the closings, but it seems as if the presence of Catholic hospitals and schools in New York City continue to decline.

Those hospitals were all distressed financially. Throw in the worst of them, St. Mary's in Brooklyn, and they were all part of Catholic Medical Center or Brooklyn and Queens. In Accounts Payable they would take the phone off the hook rather than have it ring all day from vendors looking for payment. On the plus side, all had Directors of Pharmacy who were SJU grads.
