...Can we make the Tournament?

Lose to SH - NIT
Beat SH / Lose Next Game - Some hope for NCAA / Probably NIT
Beat SH / Win BET Semi - 80% Chance in Tourney or #1 NIT Seed
Win BET - 100% Tourney with no play in game

Those are my expecatations.  Would really like to see us make at least Semis.  That makes for a succesful season.

I would also add that any loss after beating Seton Hall can't be a blowout loss.

I continue to believe that if we win next two and lose in the BET final we will dance unless (i) we lose to someone other than Creighton or UCONN or (ii) lose really badly to Creighton or UCONN. IMHO Big East is not getting more than 4 bids and Nova, Creighton & UCONN are in so if PC or Xavier win it all that would likely be at our expense.
I think failing to make final we are almost certainly NIT bound.

To add to my prior post about MSG BET games counting as home games for us (from Twitter in 2019):

Yelley @yelbeeez
Well it looks @jppalmCBS confirmed that #SJUBB is indeed considered the “Home Team” during the Big East Tournament. Thought that was a question we’d never get the answer too.

Palm also confirmed in a RT that they do count as home games for us (NET/quads). Full thread is here:

As we know, it makes a HUGE difference playing home vs neutral games. The school better get on this and make sure MSG does not count as home games for us this year. The NCAA may just be using the same template as last year.

If these games count as home for us and neutral for all of the other bubble teams playing this week, that makes our path significantly tougher. We only gained 1 NET spot after beating Seton Hall at home our last game. If that were a neutral game we probably would've improved 5 spots.

Anyone with connections want to get in touch with the school about this? I don't use Twitter personally, but Tweeting at Zach/Fanta/etc to seek clarification couldn't hurt.

The Bubble Watch at The Athletic today basically echoing our collective feeling about St John's chances...

You could forgive St. John’s fans for fostering a similar sort of positivity. The Red Storm aren’t on the bubble, but after beating Providence and Seton Hall last week, they’re not so far off of it that, as the No. 4 seed in the Big East tournament, they couldn’t at least get back on the fringe with another win over the Pirates on Thursday afternoon. Assuming Villanova holds serve against the winner of Georgetown-Marquette, that would give the Johnnies a chance to knock off the league’s best, most résumé-improving team in the semifinal. Let’s revisit it later this week, but Julian Champagnie and Co. aren’t out of this just yet.

Right now Providence is 77 in the net.
DePaul is 164 in the net.
Both of these are huge numbers for us.

As many have pointed out if Providence moves up into the top 75 we get an additional quad 1 and 2 win. But maybe just as important is DePaul. All they have to do is move up into the top 160 for that loss not to be considered a quad 4 loss. That blemish really stands out right now.

With them playing each other Its hard to imagine neither of these things happening one way or the other (good news!), I just wonder if there is a chance both could happen. It's a quad 3 game for prov and quad 2 game for DePaul.

This NET thing is rediculous.  Kentucky at 9-15 is NET 59.  Penn State at 10-13 is NET 40.  You can lend the NET some merit but there has to be the eye test and common sense.  In a year that does not have many out of conference games, how can you say that the Big 10 or the ACC is that much better then the BE.

If you are in a Power 5 conference and you are above 500 and in the top 4 to me it has to hold more weight then finishing 9th in another power 5 conference and a sub 500 record in this Covid year because of the lack of out of conference games.  And now the Garden games count as home games.  We did not play there all year.  This makes no sense to me especially this year.

I was looking at the top 4 Big 10 teams results vs other conferences this year.  Big wins vs UCF, Toledo, Notre Dame, UCLA, Duke.  Losses to Baylor, Miami, Missouri,Gonzaga.  Where is all the credibility?  Who did they beat that is good outside of their conference?

Had to dig deep for this. This will be the 6th time SJU opens the Big East Tournament against the same team which they concluded the regular season. The previous five times produced an overall record of (9-1). The one loss in 1981 to Syracuse sent us to the NIT. So for the sake of keeping this stat consistent, a win on Thursday would be a good omen.

1979-80 (NCAA) Feb.23  Providence W 68-62 / Feb.28 Providence(BET)W 48-44
1980-81 (NIT) Feb.28  Syracuse W 82-73 / Mar.05  Syracuse  (BET)L 66-71
1982-83 (NCAA) Mar.05  Pittsburgh W 91-73 / Mar.10  Pittsburgh (BET)W 64-53
1984-85 (NCAA) Mar.02  Providence W 72-53 / Mar.07 Providence(BET)W 90-62
1985-86 (NCAA) Mar.01  Seton Hall W 82-70 / Mar.06  Seton Hall(BET)W 87-68
2020-21 (?????) Mar.06  Seton Hall W 81-71 /  Mar.11  Seton Hall(BET)???????

Awesome, that makes a big difference having BET games count as neutral this year.

Also, we are now in 4 out of 139 brackets on Bracket Matrix.

There's a decent chance the winner of #94 Georgetown vs #87 Marquette will be our opponent after Hall, so in that case think it's better to root for Marquette. At this point Georgetown would do nothing for our resume (though I wouldn't complain reaching the BET Finals). Marquette wouldn't help much either, but still better than Georgetown.

Sorry Adam, I just can't bring myself to root for Wojo's team, so I'm rooting for the Hoyas & Ewing. If we take care of business and get to the final, we'll be fine imho absent losing to someone other than Creighton or UCONN there.  Plus I don't think either one of these team beats Nova in the next round, injuries notwithstanding.

Frankly we don't want them to beat Nova.  We want to play Nova the second round. The Quad difference is likely helpful for us and any game would be difficult.  A hobbled Nova team that is ranked well is preferable.
