...Can we make the Tournament?

Probably not as good as we've played recently, definitely not as bad as we played tonight. Most likely an NIT team, barring a Big East tourney run. Disappointing after how we played recently, but overall happy with what this team has accomplished this year.

We've clawed back and accomplished a lot more than we thought we could.  Even the Hall lost to Georgetown today.  Tournament or not, we are getting better.  Need a few more pieces.  Now we HAVE to sweep Nova to stay in consideration which is no easy task.  Uphill battle.

The final three games are going to be challenging. I think St John's has to win all three to get back into consideration for a he tournament.

There probably won't be a Big East tournament. St John's has to make a strong impression until the season ends.

Stating the obvious here, but we're not making the Tournament. Just gotta hope for a BET or NIT run.

Luckily tomorrow is not selection Sunday. Plenty of games left to make a mark.
Being in someones bracket on February 20th really means jackshiite.

Being in "someone's bracket"? We were only in 2 out of 103 brackets on BM before tonight. I don't even think we're on the bubble anymore.

Sure, we're not mathematically eliminated yet. Sweep or win 4/5 and we might make it, but that's pretty unlikely. There's no downplaying how big of a loss this was.

I've been a St. John's fan since '62, a Mets fan since their inception and a Jets fan since they were the Titans.
I'm 73 years old and I don't know if I can take all these devastating losses for much more.
Please Redmen, save me. Let's go on a run and make the tournament.

Not downplaying it at all. Just stating the obvious. More games are to be played and  from what we've seen from Champ and Posh, I do t think they are ready to lay down. If we don't make it, the losses to Gtown, Butler and DePaul will prove lethal.

Crushing news to wake up to. The bubble was shaping up nicely for us. This was the one game we couldn't lose. Now we are likely done baring a win out and 2-3 wins in the tournament.  The BE is pretty crummy this year and will only get 4 teams amd possibly only 3.

St Johns only fell eight spots in NET. Down to 76. Expected worse. Also DePaul moved up to point it’s a Quad 3 loss not Quad 4. So there’s that

I have posted a few times the past few weeks that the Georgetown and Butler losses would really hurt us, but on the run that we were on, I never thought a DePaul loss would bury us.

Don’t remember who said it yesterday, but somebody said on one of the shows that the BE tournament will start on March 10. So it sounds like we’re a go. Hope so.

Last night was brutal for sure.  I said the same thing after the loss.

However, the good of last night is that, the loss gave DePaul a huge bump in NET, they jumped up almost 20 points. It's now a Q3 loss rather than a Q4 loss.  Which makes a big difference.  Also, St. John's only dropped 8 spots to a 76 NET, I thought it would have been much worse and been a double digit drop.

If they can pull out a win against Villanova Tuesday, I think it would put them back on the bubble in the "Next 4 Out Group"  that win on the road would put that NET back in the mid 60's.  Also, now it's vital for the staff to add another non-conference game, I think even if they have to add a road game to an ACC or BIG 10 team on the bubble they have to take the chance.  They need another Q1 or Q2 game badly.  They somehow win those games, which would be the next 2 games, I think they are right back in the situation before last night and control their own destiny.  And I know the likelyhood of that scenario playing out exactly like that isn't great, but I do think they are capable and has played well on the road this year and bounce back after bad losses.  Villanova has looked extremely shaky lately, even in their wins, it's been close games, and they haven't looked their normal overpowering selves.

Honestly, for the good of everyone's mental health, I'd drop the bubble talk and just root like hell for our guys to win these last few games and enter the BET with some momentum.

also the main thing to root for now is for us to hold that 5 seed so we get a first round bye in the BET.

Which means root against Xavier. Believe they play butler tonight. Go bulldogs

Of course , there are some who hold out hope that the NCAA bid is possible . Winning the BE tourney would do that but , even the most ardent fan knows that's highly unlikely . We have 3 tough. BE games left . Winning all 3 ? Again , doubtful . We will have to play much better than we did against DePaul and Butler . When you want to enter the ranks of being a Contender , you have to squash those teams below you in the standings . We lost 3 games to G'Town , Butler and DePaul , that's why we aren't a Tournament team .

If we make the NIT then I'd still consider it a successful year. As of today we'd make it, but we can quickly play ourselves out of it. It's critical we get a couple more wins before Selection Sunday.

Also need to keep our major pieces for next season, but one thing at a time.

If we lose at Nova, I believe our path to get in would be as follows:

beat prov, beat seton hall
then in BET, beat a uconn/seton hall/xavier in the quarters then beat a nova/creighton in the semis.

So basically, if we lose to Nova, we need to win out and make the big east championship game.

we need to get to 18 wins to make the NCAA tournament. How we get there doesn't matter. Whether it's 3 more regular season wins and one BET win, one more regular season win and 3 BET wins etc. We need to get to 18.

I hear what you're saying and I'm all for people doing whatever is best for their own mental health. And while I get that the team just took a depressing loss and looked terible doing it, there's also a huge game against a top 10 team on Tuesday. That's an opportunity. I think the entire team is going into that game with the understanding that if they win they'll be back in the picture.

As bummed as I am and even though the odds are now against it, those odds are not a million to 1. It's not absurd to think they can play themselves back in. We know they can beat Villanova and the reality is that if they do it again the tournament is still in play. There's been too many St. John's seasons where games this late have no stakes attached. There's a game for us in late February against Villanova with tournament implications. That's the reality of the situation.

So I will concede that it's unlikely that we go into Villanova and sweep them but this team has shown an ability to bounce back before. I'm going to wait until they drop that game to talk about BET title or bust.
