Bye Bye Sampson

We all knew this one likely come, but Brandon chose us because of the PT and the opportunity available. It is imperative that we get a new coach signed and announced quickly to get Brandon back and finish up the recruitment of Diallo, the Greek kid, and others.

Players commit to coaches not schools, all these guys are off the table now

Guess you don't remember Anthony Glover, amongst others, who wound up honoring commitments in spite of coaching changes. More common than you would think.

Glover honored his commitment because of Ernie Lorch and the fact that he was a Prop 48.

Plus, he was a local kid who wanted to stay near home. As for playing time, there are plenty of Division 1 schools that can offer Brandon Sampson PT.

That's kind of different. AG committed the day after Fran was fired so he essentially committted to no coach, and of course his entire AAU team was already on the roster so there was that as well. Oh and he was local.

He was one example, maybe not the best one. The only point I was making was that kids commit to schools for a variety of reasons, and the coach leaving does not always mean the kid will back out of his commitment.

Where has Cluess ever won 12 games? Stratomatic?

Not who I want, but it is what I am predicting. Either him or Mas

My choices would be
1. Pitino
2. Donovan
3. One of the Miller's
3. Mullin /Slice
4. Berry
5. Me
6. Fun

Mullin only realistic choice I would be ok with.

Well it's going to be none of those people,

Where's you're secondary list?

Well the good news is once Cluess is hired, Baldi will stop bashing the coach. Of course that will be equally irksome when he is defending a 12-19 coach. See Roberts, Norm

Cluess just signed a mult year extension with Iona yesterday

Not that I want Tim Cluess but signing an extension means nothing.

See Alford, Steve

And why not? -Desco

Becuase:
1. School will not shell out $ for top tier coach
2. Once Jordan and CO leave we will not have one legit D1 starting player on our roster
3. Despite what some disillusioned few still believe, SJU is not a destination for a established succesful coach.
4. No perspective coach once to deal with your fashion critique daily

Here's a thing you're forgetting: Steve Lavin sucked at coaching basketball.

Also I am i much better pretend coach than you, as I I never would have offered Larry Wright.

I am a redmen til I die. As long as the coach isn't Roberts or Jarvis or anyone tied to Roberts/Jarvis I will jump on the band wagon. I will reserve my right to refuse any kool-aid though until we see results though...even if I have to wait until I retire (circa 2035)

Fun
Don't you mean two time NCAA tourney participant Larry Wright?
I liked Wright simply becuase I hated everyone else on Norm's teams. Though he did have a pretty jumpshot. Sometimes late at night I still find myself thinking of it.

Lavin is not a very good coach. Agreed. Comparing him to Norm and the realistic replacements. Not expecting much, which is why I would have stood pat.

Mullin would be my sentimental favor - he was my basketball idol growing up... but what has he coached...ever. Seems a risky venture to hire anyone, as beloved by the community as Mullin is, to come in to this situation, with no coaching credentials, and turn this thing around.

Hurley would be my favorite. Local ties. Current positive coaching reputation for success.

Sorry - guess this should have been in another thread. Oops

And why not?

Why would a guy who's the Golden Boy of St. John's basketball, who's never coached, and who's financially well off want to take on the headache of coaching a depleted team whose returning core players will likely be Amar, Christian Jones, Balamou and an untested (and most likely still out-of-shape) ADR; face criticism from once-adoring, impatient fans if he fails to oversee an immediate turnaround in the team's fortunes (see Clyde Drexler at Houston); suck up to HS & AAU coaches and "advisors"; and have to deal with constant media coverage?

As AD -- which I'd love to see him be, especially given his administrative NBA experience and his presence -- Mullin could have a profound impact on the basketball program, not have to deal with the onerous task of recruiting, spend more time with his family, and not risk having a much-valued legacy tarnished.

MOOSE
You pulled Lavin's name out of your ass last time, who is it going to be?

I wanted Lavin in 2003 when UCLA was pushing him out. Was surprised his name came up 5 years ago.

I'm staying out of this one. Whoever we get will work harder thats for sure.
