@Butler, Wed. Feb. 15, 8:30pm, FS1/570AM

Yawkwe has 0 rebounds.

Actually he had 2 rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time. Ahmed, Lovett, Owens and Mussini outrebounded him. Hopefully next year there should not be much playing time, especially since he doesn't rebound or score.

I did not expect to beat a Butler team that has knocked off a bunch of ranked teams this year.  We were simply outplayed at every position tonight but like so many games this year we did not come out ready.  Our perimeter defense continues to suck and the rebounding effort was non existent.  Yakwe was constantly out of position for rebounds and Alibegovic doesn't even try to rebound afraid to mess up his hair.  Both guards played smaller than their height tonight and Lovett played without any intention of directing the offense.  Except for Bashir, Owens got no help inside.  How bad were we?  Mussini kept us in the game while Ellison fumbled, fell over himself or otherwise turned the ball over. Both Yakwe and Ellison could not finish inside where Bashir would have scored or been fouled.  Both will be bench players next year without a doubt but their lack of footwork and offensive instincts may make them too unreliable even off the bench without major improvement over the next 8 months.  Hopefully Matt signs a diamond in the rough because too much cubic zirconia pretending to be diamonds on this team.

Some rough stat lines in this game

Yawke 23 minutes 2 boards
Ellison 12 minutes 4 fouls and 3 turnovers
Ali B 14 minutes 5 fouls and 0 rebounds

Good games and hustle by Mussini and Bashir.

We have 8 rebounds. I think they have just as many 3 pointers as we have rebounds. At some point these guys need to look in the mirror and realize these types of performances can't just be written off because of "youth and inexperience." I'm not giving them that cop out anymore.

Spot on. Horrible display tonight.

Yakwe and Ellison couldn't finish with Kate Upton and Scarlett Johannsen tonight.

My two cents worth:

We gave up 110 Points!!!!!
We were outrebounded 40 to 25!!!!!

Post Game Quote (Mullin)

http://www.redstormsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/021517aaf.html

St. John's Head Coach Chris Mullin

On the game:

"I got to give credit to Butler. They played a great game; moved the ball."

On getting outrebounded:

"That has been a problem of ours. [It's] something that's just going to come as we get stronger. When you play small, you have to be quick to the ball. I tell [our team] that you can get outrebounded, but you can't get outrebounded, lose 50/50 balls, play selfish and all those things. You can make up for it in other areas, but if you lose every area that's what happens."

The only silver lining to last night's debacle is getting to read Fun's recap of it this morning. It should be even more entertaining than normal. And he might actually have to go back to calling him "Mussini", even for just one game.

Wideman really set the tone early with his physicality and bull rushing tactics. They even had trouble boxing him out on foul line. Strong guy, who does more than box score indicates.

I was watching the game with my son last night and he said wow it looks like SJU is a bunch of kids playing against men. It certainly looked that way when going for a rebound.

In a fortunate turn of events, I fell asleep during the second half of this game. Woke up to see that Butler has scored 110 points. 110! There was no way Butler was going to lose last nite after losing 3 of the last 4, they'd be too fired up. But I really thought the days of us playing defense that atrociously were over. Guess not.

Disgusted lets keep thing in perspective from tonite going forward To give up 110 points there is no defense and perhaps they just can't play defense Nice to run but maybe we should have slowed each possession and saved some face This could be the most a st johns team has given up Would not have happen with coachC[/quot

Hi USG!
In Aruba knew nothing about the game until reading these posts.
It's easy to critique the obvious - pourous defense, few rebounds
No one likes to lose
but ahhh
Perspective!
One could argue John Wooden, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson and yes
Coach Carnesseca
COULD DO NO BETTER WITH THIS AAA team!
As I've posted before:
Great season because we've made progress!
The kids have another year of experience, they played hard in many games - not all of course...Owens has been a pleasant surprise and some here wanted to run him out of town...
we have the two quality recruits sitting out (Simon?&? Forget their names)
the staff will always be in the prowl for additions...
Being optimistic and realistic I'd settle for 2 or even one more W!
all the best

Another "selfish & soft" game. The first 5 minutes they had at least 5 offensive rebounds. 3 of them the ball literally touched a St. John's players hand. Yakwe is useless on the D-Glass (that is why Coach plays Amar). Overall butler punched us early and often we didn't respond.

Hopefully we bounce back at Marquette. With some intensity & focus .

Ability to string together wins part of growing process. We've alternated loss-win for 9 games now, 50% of conference schedule. The flip side is that not allowing 1 loss to turn into 2 is also a strong and important trait, and we've done a pretty good job of that.

Inability to string together consistent efforts? More concerning but hope also part of young, inexperienced team.

Don't think last night can be explained by any of that, at least not exclusively. Really bad showing. On to Marquette.

I'm honestly going to chalk that game up to running in to a buzz saw. I know Butler had a lot of open looks but they are a 35% three point shooting team who hit 13 threes and shot 50% last night. Every time St. John's looked like they were putting something together Butler had an answer.

It also seems that now we go as Tariq Owens goes. Even though he played 25 minutes, him being in foul trouble really impacted the kind of effect he's been having on games lately.

I have not liked what I've been seeing from Ahmed these last two games. He had a nice article about him in the Post recently about finally buying in and improving his shot selection. Since then he's been stopping the ball movement and trying to bully his way to the basket whenever the ball gets in his hands again.

Bad game it happens time to move on.
One thing I will say is Ellison annoys me more than he doesn't. Don't mean to pick on one guy when we gave up 110 but it is how I feel.
Missed first couple minutes. Who were those terrible announcers? Two parents of Butler players?

I think it is time for the program to invest in a weight room and a cafeteria.
Whatever happened to Freshman 15 or 40? Our guys seem to be losing weight. Clearly they are not enjoying the College experience properly.

I noticed that when seeing the starting lineups. They looked like muscular men, we looked like skinny kids.

It's not a crime to lose to Butler in Hinkle, but that was a terrible performance all the way around - especially on defense. We should be better than that by this point in the season.
