@Butler, Wed. Feb. 15, 8:30pm, FS1/570AM

Most disappointing was the lack of effort. Can we please teach these kids how to box out and rebound? Our guys look like chickens with their heads cut off at times on D.

I loved the quote from Mullin after the hall game that they showed: We're a dangerous team, sometimes we're dangerous to our opponents and sometimes we're dangerous to ourselves. Kinda' sums up the situation pretty good.

We've had some real stinkers but we've also had some real nice games. This year the stinkers predominate, I'm thinking next year the nice games will come to the forefront.

we need to turn it around against quette next week or we might not win another game this year.

Chrabascz ran out to the top of the key to disrupt the ballhandler numerous times. They were definitely overplaying the guards and letting our bigs beat them. Mussini was hot and we scored a ton from the line so we could have hung in the game if we could have grabbed some more rebounds. The rebounding problem doesn't seem fixable this season but it has to be a priority for next year.

If before the season someone offered to bet you the over / under on Yakwe rebounds per game at 3.3 how fast would you have taken the over?

Sorry but we scored 86 points; unfortunately we gave up 110; this game was not won or lost by any defensive scheme employed by Butler. Our rebounding problem is the same as our defensive problem, not enough players are committed to the effort parts of the game anywhere near 100% except Owens.

Boy was that rough to watch. Flat start, lack of defense and rebounding was exacerbated by the poor shooting and the mind numbing amount of whistles (a quick rant here because I rarely rag on officials, but I wasted my voice bitching about all the calls - and the terrible make up calls that followed). If you are a half court team like Butler you can deal with all the stoppages of time, if you are an up and down transition team like us, even if the calls are equal it really creates a game flow problem that kills us. A few observations in Indianapolis:
1. Ellison and Alibegovic are tough to watch. I don't understand how second generation (or more) players lack instincts or muscle memory with all of their experience and the wealth of knowledge at their disposal. No greater amount of instruction or coaching will help improve certain players. At some point, you are who you are, and these young men seem like great people, but they are extremely limited on the floor and don't seem to have more upside to their game.
2. Owens is even skinnier than I thought. I think I out weigh him and I'm 5' 7 with a medium build. Please get him a few 1000 calories a day more.
3. I can't get over how much Coach gets away with getting on the floor during games. If there was ever a game he should have wanted to get T'ed up in, this was it, yet I thought he should have been given 3 or so when getting on the floor, he was 20 feet away from the bench more times that I can remember someone not named Knight doing so.
4. The fans sadly (and pretty pathetically) chanted "U.S.A" at Mussini during his free throws. It was lame AND stupid at the same time.
Though I've been absent from much of the discourse this season, I've watched this up and down season with a mixture of optimism and incongruity, but I do love the way Ponds plays and comports himself on the floor (even that dust up, which kinda made me proud). Lovett was rag tag most of the game and Ahmed continues to confound me but they should be much better next year with some help. I do hope that the boys take losses a little harder, because it is beyond the pale to give up that many points in a non overtime game, regardless of the whistles. Hope we win a couple more, get a bit more help, and get better next season.

Butler came out and set the tone by playing good defense. They shot the ball poorly for the first eight minutes but we only had seven points. Once they got hot it was game over because our rebounding and defense were horrible. In the Seton Hall game I felt we set the tone early.

Bad game it happens time to move on.
One thing I will say is Ellison annoys me more than he doesn't. Don't mean to pick on one guy when we gave up 110 but it is how I feel.
Missed first couple minutes. Who were those terrible announcers? Two parents of Butler players?

Not sure if this was addressed as I work my way through the last few pages but one announcer was Jordan Cornette whose brother was on a Butler sweet 16 team in 2003 and he died this summer. His brother did talk about him a bit during the second half as it related to Woodson though I didn't understand what he was getting at, though by then I wasn't fully paying attention.

Yeah was switching back and forth between our game and Knick game. Caught tale end of his brothers story but I guess I missed the beginning of it so like you I too was confused. Sorry about his brother but he was terrible and obviously a homer.
That stuff about Ponds was ridiculous. Wideman had a good game and could probably beat up our whole team but he was posing after getting fouled and smashed into Ponds. Ponds rightfully took offense.

Yeah there is too much "homer" broadcasting going on lately. It was evident last night, it was really bad with Steve Lappas against Nova, and I'm sure it is bad for our opponents when Tarik Turner calls our games.

I would rather have neutral broadcasters call the game. That play with Wideman and Ponds was terribly called by the guys yesterday. It was obvious Wideman celebrated and ran into Ponds without Ponds looking. Ponds just turned around and kinda gave a "what was that for" look. They made it seem like Ponds ran up to Wideman and picked a fight.

Come on, we gave little real effort, this game had nothing to do with tone setting. You play 40 minutes or you don't and we didn't. We continue to have too many players concerned about their offense and not doing what it takes to be a consistent competitive team.

Rebounding wise we are out-manned. Takes a concerted effort for 40 mins from guys to have a performance like we did against SH. You are simple not going to get that every game.

tomato tomato. You guys are both right. Our early tone set was poor defense Lovett, Bashir forcing and not hitting. Too many underwear models on this team and not enough junkyard dog.

Disgusted lets keep thing in perspective from tonite going forward To give up 110 points there is no defense and perhaps they just can't play defense Nice to run but maybe we should have slowed each possession and saved some face This could be the most a st johns team has given up Would not have happen with coachC

Quick check of the record book shows the most points given up by a St. John's team was a 113-97 loss to Syracuse in 1965. Yup, Coach C. Guess we should have canned his butt right there... ;)

Thanks for looking that up. No matter 11o-113 is a failure on the defense can not cream coat it Last yr and this ye we have way too many teams score high on us Yes Coach see had some bad games but his body of work speaks volume Coach M has a lot of work to do on his end the staff and the team. I have supported him and the team and will continue to do so but when they play like they did against Bulter they all should be call out

Yes you can; we don't, but you can. Effort is the ONLY thing a player truly controls and this team turns effort on and off with disarming regularity. I accept the losing and our youth and our lack of real size but our lack of effort just doesn't cut it for me.

Mussini should get more mins than ellison

I really don't get the lack of effort complaint. I know that even the guys who don't play much, like Amar, are amped up all week for the next game, and I am certain are much more focused on upcoming games than on schoolwork.

Now I don't always think energy shows up on the court, especially in away games where a home crowd can just take the air out of you. It's a weird really - like the adrenalin being sucked out of your body when you are not playing well away. I also believe that when a team falls behind, individual players break from the team first mode, not to be selfish, but to try to make something happen. When that happens, guys sometimes start playing outside of their ability and bad things happen.

Flat yes. Air sucked out of the room, yes. Sluggish play as a result, yes. But not trying - I don't buy it.
