Butler, Sat., Jan. 4 , 2p, FS-1

Ignoring the coach is a total recipe for losing...especially a coach with Pitino's credentials. Turns out Zuby made the only threes in the game (If my memory serves me correctly.) If he missed, there was the possibility of a long rebound...especially with four Creighton players in the paint at the time. Oh, well. If Luis had been fouled, he might have missed the two free throws leading to another discussion here.
Thought Ayo made the ONLY 3???

That's 1 play...you made it sound like the entire team is defiant to what Pitino is asking...
I thought Pitino said after the Creighton game that after RJ missed the first shot he should have taken another wide open three instead of driving into two players and hoping for a foul call (which on the road is unlikely in that situation).

Many top prograns have a part or Full time sport psychologist available. Jay Wright was a huge advocate of this...they had a full time one on staff abd articles were written
It's insane we don't have one. I assumed we did.

Thankfully, looks like we're hiring for a "Sport Psychologist / Associate Director for Student-Athlete Psychological Services" which you'd assume is the beginning of a department.

I interpreted what Rick said as they discussed in the previous huddle if they were down by 2 pts, he wanted a screen set by RJ and the pass to go to Zuby for an open three. Then he said he wanted RJ to take the open three on the tap back by Jasen Green instead of driving it into the 2 guys

I agree that because we have had a number of unsuccessful coaches doesn’t make Pitino a good coach. I don’t agree it’s not a relevant data point as I would rather have an employee that is an average performer then a terrible one. Not that I think Pitino is average.

If you are talking about the UCONN game in the BET, I was there but I can’t recall how Dunlap was used. I found the game to be very enjoyable despite the fact that we lost and felt it was one of the best games we played all season. Ultimately I believe we lost because UCONN was the better team but clearly agree we underachieved at times last year.

I completely agree with your points on the lineups and the structure of the team and how Richmond and Smith are not a good backcourt combination. Its a hard problem to solve as we have limited options but would like to hear more about how you would solve this problem particularly with Brady out.

Calling out players in public and playing mind games with them does seem unprofessional. As to whether it has any positive impact is hard to quantify.

You are old school and no reason to apologize for it. As I get older I see things differently as well. I also think that seeing value in new tools like analytics is important as well.
I disagree. Jarvis was very successful. Lavin had success as well. In fact if we don’t make tournament this year, Pitino falls in line behind both those guys and maybe Mahoney.

I truly hope that tomorrow's game is a good performance, and that the team starts to realize its potential. Hard to believe that the team can continue to shoot the ball at such a poor rate, but that definitely has to improve. And the FT shooting also has to be better particularly from KR, which is inexplicable). 3-1 is a good (tho ugly) start. Let's continue to win, and pretty it up too...

.
We may win games but I think we have to understand that they won’t look pretty. With how team shoots the basketball just be happy with wins not how they look. I think the fans will have an easier time if they accept that reality.

I'm expecting a loss (but i hope we win).

What happens if we lose by a bucket? Will the narrative still be that we are a XX amount of points from being a top 5/10 team? That we're right there. That we will get better..
That argument only works if they finally start winning some of these tough games. If we wind up with 10 losses by a total of 15 points we’re not dancing. That argument only goes so far.

It is possible that the identity of this team is "win ugly" and with the veterans they have they are mentally tough enough to do that.

Yes, I like that narrative. It has no expiration date. I like that we are a highly competitive defensive minded team that can run with
all comers but just hasn't been able to get over the top yet for obvious reasons.

Legend also was successful as he inherited the worst team in the history of the program, sorry to those that know of a worse season than I in the Wonder 5 and Mutt and Jeff eras, and built it into a tournament team in year 4. Reminder: his best players were Durand and Mvoika...ooiiee! Norm and CFC he was not and it's wrong and offensive to lump him in with them.

Back to Maher point, here are the career college FT % of ST John’s point/ combo guards since I began watching:
Jackson 75%
Harvey 82%
Buchanon 76%
Cain 67%- really only played his Senior year
Barkley 73%
Cook 74%
Hatten 73%
Hill 74%
Geno 69%-least fav player before this season
Hardy 81%
Greene 70%- Carmine’s fav the circle
Jordan 66%
Ponds 84%
Posh 76%- and we all thought he couldn’t shoot
Jenkins 80%-Marillac fav player shot FT at at 37% clip better than KR
Smith 62%
Kadary this season 43%

I may be wrong but wasn't St. John's out of time outs?
Had a timeout left. Chose to play it out.

The recruiting and then coaching by Fraschilla/Jarvis was by far our most successful period post Lou on the basketball court but the balls inciden and that night in Pittsburgh led to Norm.

Lavin had his moments but didnt win a tournament game. At this point Mullin would be ahead of Pitino by your metrics.

Like Lavin did initially, Pitino has brought attention to our program and more butts in the seats. Maybe he is past his prime but he has a resume very few active coaches come close to.

Mahoney gave us Felipe so for that I will be forever grateful.
