Butler, Sat., Jan. 4 , 2p, FS-1

We've just had our last coach be in a huddle where the entire team visibly doesn't pay attention to him, the coach before that a Hall of Famer who sat on the scorers table and would stand outside the huddle while looking in behind the players to watch what a 23 or 24 year old kid would come up with then we had our arguable best coach since Looie ( not including Pitino ) criticized for his love of words in front of a mic ( ironically our coach now gets that too ) he also got criticized by some for basically having cancer and being up in a box at MSG and also for recruiting during it after he lost Gathers then got knocked for not going to CTK to recruit but that was Arbitello pissed at him for not letting his nephew or something be a walk on or something like that ( plus Panther actually went with Lavin to CTK games ) so that was asbsolute lies against him then we had one of the worst 2 coaches in the history of the Big East which we had to suffer though for how many years ? Then we had a pompous coach who had a couple years of our best runs ever with the previous coaches players who told a high school gymnasium of coaches he wasn't going to recruit HS kids anyone. Then we also had a coach that dropped his pants in the locker room to show the team his basketballs. Then we had a coach who was. a great recruiter but who's best assistant coach was his point guard David Cain who got him a contract extention

And yet some criticize Pitino.

Like Kadary, it's all about the expectations game now isn't it?

St. John's is 12-3, and 3-1 to start Big East play. There have been missteps and missed opportunities but through tenacious and elite defense St. John's has more often times than not, found a way to win. Zach Braziller of the New York Post joins me to discuss the win over Butler, the press defense, the poor three point shooting, Kadary Richmond's impact in the victory and what needs to happen to get a road win against Xavier on Tuesday.

Dave, the reality is, we are 3-1 cause the three teams we beat are potential league bottom feeders.

Could not have said it better my friend. Thought for today, imagine if every posters professional life was televised or put on Youtube? Would be very interesting.

Could be but then what were your expectations of Anderson ( I actually don't remember ) but I remember on some thread you had mentioned you thought his downfall was Curbelo. That could partially be right but his teams literally had the worst body language towards their coach I've ever seen as a St Johns fan. Worse than Mullin because at least Anderson was in the huddle but the camera would literally catch 4/5ths of the starting 5 staring at the roof or not paying attention. Not just one game but tons of games. People here noted it time and again.

Before the season started I gotta find the thread my guess was I expected us to be 13-2 and we are 12-3. Not the end of the world

Now the new one and has nothing to do with you but here comes the " will Pitino quit stuff " even though he said he's not

St Johns fans can't have nice things

After all these years I know and talk to so many people in my section (8) that it’s like sitting with friends. I don’t think it’s SJU fans, at least not the ones I know and talk to all over NY.

It’s mostly here and I guess Twitter too? It’s a social media thing - not reflective of the overall fan base who are showing up in much greater numbers and generally “happy.”

Let’s face it the demographics here skew very old (hand straight up) and male and the phrase “Grumpy Old Man” didn’t come to fruition for no reason.

I wouldn’t use the small sample of posters on a message board as reflective of the overall fan base.

That's a very fair point. One of my buddies who sits with us in 114 with a couple others are Nova grads ( donors ) and aren't on this site and are loving St Johns and Pitino

If there is 1 thing on this site the holds true is that expectations are insane. All the time

My own included. Panther probably the only reasonable poster here

Where is Fordham. He's got the receipts :)
I was hoping that we could be 13-2 at this point. We are 12-3 with the three losses by a total of 5 points. I believe that we will get better going forward. I will continue to root hard as the season plays out.

And to soften my other comment a little. Message boards also attract people who enjoy analyzing, deciphering, and critiquing. These traits can come off as more negative than the poster is, as pointing out flaws is a way of being "helpful" and pointing out strengths would feel unnecessary.

I know personally I'm mostly just a miserable old goat (not GOAT) but I don't want to put that on everyone.

I guess the main issue though is I don’t see them shooting better. If can’t shoot the degree of difficulty goes way up especially against better teams. Yeah 12-3 is great but seems like fools gold honestly. That is my feeling honestly. And full disclosure if I see ST John’s on selection Sunday and not as a the play in it is a successful season for me win or lose.

You mean final 4 this year is unreasonable? 🫣

My expectation for Anderson was that he could get SJU to "respectability" as in middle-of-the-pack in the Big East - which I thought was an improvement from where the program was at the time. And then I figured after 4 or 5 years the program would be in a place where it could take another step forward with the right hire.

I generally liked the players he brought in and I thought his coaching approach was one that would help him recruit (seems I was right about that, at least). But as it turned out he had too loose of a hand on the wheel and Curbelo was (in my opinion) his undoing. He reached for the talent and instead that head case blew up his program.

My concerns with Pitino I've stated in full, and said the same when he was hired. I am not sure that his old-school approach can work with today's players. His coaching can, and he can certainly handle the NIL world, and between those two things he has exceeded Anderson although not by a country mile, as they say.

But like Anderson - albeit for the opposite reason - he is not getting the most out of his roster either. And if he can't maximize the talent he has on the roster then the dreams of "we hired Pitino, we're going to the Final Four" may have to settle for a reality of "we made the play-in game." Which is not what you hire Pitino for, now is it.

IF we make the NCAA and not backdoor in like Mullin then it's all a crapshoot and while I would hope that we go a lot further I'd still be happy.

If over the next 4 years we are a perennial NCAA tourney team then Pitino has done what no other coach since 1992 has done

For the record I was very much in favor of Anderson getting hired and was for the contract extension. Was clear to me he lost the team his last year ( Curbelo definitely being an issue ) but it was clear others had tuned him out too

Ayo has been with Pitino for what, 4 years now? He knows what the game plan is and he knows what the coach wants. And he brings energy. He's the guy the coach loves even though he's unplayable at this level because he's a sixth man on a decent mid-major sort of player.

If he gets more than 2 minutes in any game, you know that the one of two things is true: it's a blowout, or Pitino has reached "throw sh*t at the wall and see if something works" stage.

I will add one day-after positive to the train wreck that was yesterday (which was really just a microcosm of the things that are wrong that IMO stem from the coaching): the veteran aspect of this team should not be underrated. They handled a tough atmosphere at Creighton pretty well and gave themselves a chance to win the game at the end, and they persevered yesterday when basically nothing was going right outside of 5 minutes in the second half when the pressure D was effective and Kadary taking over with a series of winning plays at the end (somewhat offset by the free throw trainwreck, but you could point to moving past that as another sign of mental toughness for this team).
He’s been with Pitino for 2.5 seasons. He has almost no minutes here.

What he did yesterday for an 11th man with little to no on-court experience was very impressive.

I think you are selling him very short.

Great rant. My only criticism is you neglected to add paragraphs.
