Butler Game

Every game has a goat so who was it today?

Lavin for having a 5 man roster with 2 offensive players.

Lavin probably walks away after this season with a nice job at Fox Sports on the west coast, but we are left to live with the remaining lack of talent. It's not completely his fault, the administration basically killed this program when it hired Norm Roberts and kept him around for so long. After that, the pickings were pretty slim as far as "big name" hires were concerned. That said, for a supposedly great recruiter, after making an initial splash, Lavin has left a lot to be desired.

Phil Greene dropped the ball! Probably blame Branch for passing it too hard.

Greene was 6-11 from the field today, but posters will find some way to kill him.

Yeah well Marillac, if the ball doesn't slip out of his hands and hits the 3, well guess what?
It's tied. The loss isn't on him but that was huge.
Well whoever said: " If Jordan is done, then we're done." Is 100%. I was just hoping that others would step it, well here are our sub #s 1board and 1 lousy assist.

I hate to sould negative but if no Jordan on Tuesday then we'll be 0-3.
I think he would have been the difference today.

0-4 without him at a minimum. They are an NIT team without Sheed. They will miss his scoring and matchup problems he creates. butler couldn't stay in front of him last year. Was hoping to enjoy this year considering I don't like long term outlook right now. Well short term isn't looking good without Sheed now either.

firing fran and not getting cal was the beginning of the end. hiring jarvis and then norm finished us off

Coaching staff takes a couple of years off recruiting, and now can't field enough players. This was not supposed to happen again. As the loses continue should it be expected that people show up at games. Why was this allowed to happen?

Because Lavin recruited big time players with marginal attitudes and inflated images of themselves because he couldn't get the best players like the type that a Duke, Louisville, Texas , Kentucky or Arizona gets so that's what he settled for just to improve the Talent base. He settled for players with big time talent but poor attitudes and huge ego's, Lindsey, Sampson, Jordan, Sanchez etc. Even Dom ,Harrison and Obepka have had issues. Ok, Obepka decided to stay and it worked out but his attitude last year hurt this team, Harrison I give all the credit in the world to because he worked through it and became an excellent player and a better person, Dom it took him 4yrs to get his head straight and his act together and he still has not improved his jumpshot in four years. This is the type of player that Lavin recruits. Talented players but flawed with regard to attitude and work ethic. He's hoping to catch lightning in a bottle because he really can't convince the cream of the crop top shelf player to come here. A kid like Myles Turner of Texas for example. That's been his strategy and it hasn't worked. we need players who can shoot and have strong character and build their games over 4 years because they will have the character and the work ethic to do that. who cares if they're only 3.5 star players. They will have the type of attitude that will make them coachable and able to develop them and improve their games. That's why this was allowed to happen.

Every game someone on the other team kills us from three point land. How does that happen? Dunham killed us today. He beat us almost singlehandedly, the same way Gibbs did on Wednesday, although he had a little help from Sina. But, it's the same thing every game we lose. You know the coaches have to be on this. Why can't these kids get it. Why does it always take until the last 7 minutes of the game because these kids decide to crank it up on defense? I just don't get it. Anyway, this has all the indications of disaster in the making.

I'm not giving up on the season yet, hopefully Jordan gets his head out of his ass and decides to play Tuesday. It really kills me that one player could f our season up.

I would expect more from Branch. Needs to take the ball to the basket and take more shots.

Would have liked to see him take it to the basket.

Coaching staff takes a couple of years off recruiting, and now can't field enough players......

Hey Joe....
Your sentence should read: "The hard working coaching staff takes a couple of years off recruiting, and now can't field enough players.

I am told that there were no members of the hard working StJ's staff at the nearby Christ the King/ Molly game last evening but coaches from other schools did not find it inconvenient to attend the game in efforts to recruit Rawle Alkins and others.

Branch air balled a wide open shot tonight. We need him driving and dishing not shooting.

And 6-16 the last game Give me a break

and Duham did nothing against Nova not even one three. Your point?

Because Nova closes out on the 3pt shooters extremely aggressive. We wait until there's 7 min left in the game to crank up our defense. Why I don't know?

Just like Lavin to start with a zone and allow Dunham to make 3 three pointers. Doesn't he scout these teams, probably not. Oh I forgot, just like he checks the academic records of his recruits.
Wow, really impressed with the lineup with Jones and Joey D. Lavin and the Johnnies are in big trouble. Let's face it, as Gottlieb mentioned, we have only two offensive players, D'LO and Greene.

firing fran and not getting cal was the beginning of the end. hiring jarvis and then norm finished us off

Firing Fran was not a mistake, he was not a particularly good coach, and a much worse person, not to mention, a ticking time bomb. Jarvis was 110-61 at St. John's, got us to the dance three times, and won the NIT. While it was right to cut ties with him (they should not have done it during the season, after 6 games), the hiring of Norm Roberts, a coach with absolutely no track record, who holds a career coaching record of 105-185, and yet was somehow allowed to remain at St.John's for SIX YEARS, was undoubtedly the death blow to this program. It's really not even debatable.

Why should they go after a N.Y kid when Lavin is scheduling his next European trip.

a win Tuesday and we are tied with Nova at 1 and 2 each. Not the end of the world yet.

Almost, pretty close. First of all we have to keep Nova under 70 points because we probably won't score more then 60 if we 're lucky.

Harrison played a great game today, and nearly carried the team on his back. Butler was able to shake off most of our defensive pressure, and made FTs down the stretch, with #24 making the big three when Harrison slipped. Sellout crowd. We didn't play badly and Butler played a solid game.

The wheels are off the wagon. Hopefully we regroup and have a somewhat succesful year but doubtful and then start from scratch with a hungry young coach that recruits hard nose players and shooters. Minimum 2 more down years.

Sorry folks, but this is a mediocre team in a mediocre conference. Good teams don't lose that game at home. There's still some time, but this season could easily spiral out of control. I know it's not popular to say this sort of stuff around here, but it's true.

Amen!

i would agree fran wasn't a great coach but he was a good recruiter. jarvis won because he had frans players. jarvis was too lazy to recruit,, he expected players would flock to him like he was calipari. and we wound up with grady reynolds ans wille shaw. but i do agree that hiring norm was the final dagger in the program

Can someone explain to me how our PG was so highly rated and can't shoot a lick?

Probably the same old, same old story. These athletes score on layups, and steals in high school and come to college without a jump shot. Why they don't develop one is a mystery.
