I think people complaining they don't want to be in a "play-in" game qualifies as counting chickens.

Lavin thinks five Big East teams will make the dance. That's also counting chickens, even if Lavin is the biggest hypemeister on the air.
He must be including old Big East members Syracuse, Cincinnati, Louisville (all in the top ten), along with Pittsburgh, and UCONN. The sad truth is we're a two team conference with a third coming if Villanova or Creighton don't win the Big East Tournament. Remember, the selection committee must also choose from the AAC and the Atlantic 10, which will bring in more than two teams apiece.

In other words, this is no time for the team to be complacent. Five and two may not be enough. I think we have a solid shot at winning the BET. However, I wouldn't want to depend on it given our past performances.

Newsie I agree with you that the depth of the BE pretty much stops at 2 teams, maybe 3 if you go by what oldtimers think of as good teams.

But a week or so ago I ran through all the automatic bids and all the major conference teams that were sure things and I only got to 48 teams or so. They are going to have to fill out the rest of the field somehow and given the dropoff in some of the other conferences (SEC and PAC-10 in particular), they are going to have to add teams from the BE. So think the BE gets four by default, and I expect a few extra bids among the better mid-major conferences also.

BE could get five, but unless that fifth team is a conference tournament winner that would be a sad commentary on the state of the game IMHO.

I agree with your analysis on what it's going to take to get in and what would put us out. Certainly, 4-3 over these last 7 means winning the BET. 5-2, 2 BET wins locks it up, and I think we have a shot winning only 1 BET game at 21-12 depending on how a whole host of variables shake out across the country. 6-1 (possible but not the most likely outcome), we might just have done enough to get in with no BET wins (although coming that far just to make things that uncertain would certainly be frustrating), although 1 would certainly lock it up.

That is why I see tonight (or whenever we play SH) as so critical. If we are able to put this game in the W column, that leaves 6 games with 4 at the Garden. 4-2 will seem far more attainable under those circumstances than 5-2 with those one looming.

Agree completely. Beating Seton Hall will go a long way to creating some breathing room. If we can shave that game and the Georgetown game off the schedule as wins then it becomes very do-able. I'm concerned about both games. We aren't a good road team (though better these days) and the Hall plays us tough. And we just never seem to match up well against Georgetown and the offense they run.

The wild card in all of this is if we win the Nova game. I think all the games on the schedule are roughly equal for NCAA chances, but the Nova game is a difference maker if we win it. For some reason I just feel like we have a puncher's chance in that one. If we pull that out and get to 20 wins then I think we're a bubble team even with a close loss in the BET, and we're in with a win. If we beat Nova and get to 21 then I think we're in (barring a bad loss in the BET).

Agreed on all counts, especially the concern about SH @ SH. They always play us tough, and when was the last time we won there?

February 15, 1998. Yes, 1998! :eek:hmy: As Roger Rubin writes in today's Daily News, Phil Greene was 6, Dlo was 5, and Rysheed was 2.

A neat trick considering the Prudential Center opened in 2007.

@BEandBeyond: How does this year's Big East conference stack up with the 'old Big East' of the past 10 years? Check it out at:http://t.co/Qp4blzqlTM

Interesting maybe but doing the sniff test, does anyone really think the conference matches up with the BE of old? I don't and that is no knock on the current conference. We have good competitive teams but it is way too early to try to compare the new conference with one that had historic success. That success was certainly one of the reasons that the money (ESPN) and a major rival (ACC) got together to help break it up. ESPN was no longer sure of the money coming from the BE and the ACC saw a chance to better themselves by elininating the competition basketball wise and ensuring they weren't the ones raided and potentially lose out on the mega-football money. Obviously, the BE football schools had the same desire to ensure the football revenue so there you go. At the end of the day, it was all about the $, as it always is.

I never said they played that February 15, 1998 game at the Prudential Center. It was at the then Continental Airlines Arena, which is now the Izod Center.

i don't for one minute think that people complaining about playing in a "play-in" game is counting chickens.

And as far as Lavin's predictions, what would you like him to say? "Yeah, with the loss of so many powerhouses, we're a down league this year and we really only have two solid NCAA tournament teams. The rest of us will be lucky to make the NITs."

I've said this before, I want my coach talking up my team and my conference. You say hypemeister, I say optimist. After the Creighton win, Jakarr was interviewed and asked what accounted for this turnaround. Sampson said (and I'm paraphrasing here) that is was Coach's positive attitude. You may not like what Lavin has to say, but quite honestly, it really doesn't matter if you, or I, like what he says. Whatever he's saying is resonating with the guys in the locker room. And that's where it counts.

The only reason I complained about the play in game was because someone posted a link to a mock bracket at this point in the season and the bracket had us in a play in.

I was not counting my chickens, and am aware of the work we have to do to make the tournament.

Every game will be a struggle except maybe DePaul and butler, so I, and no one should be counting their chickens.

Bingo, Tony!

I found none of those things to be considered as "counting chickens." Some people.... Oh, well....

Keep winning, gang!

Pull for Pacific over BYU tonight. That could put us in the tournament per the BPI.

No offense but the tournament's in March. Nothin that happens tonight is going to put us in.

16-9, 6-6. with four out of six remaining games at MSG. Take care of the home court and we are at 20 wins...with two road games to play with and the BET remaining. Very nice stretch of basketball by the team. 4-0 in February!

You'll thank me later. Pacific wins!
