Big East & UConn

bottom line is what will make the CONFERENCE stronger. Adding UCONN will only make the BE better.

That is the assumption but with a little non-linear thinking it is not the "no brainer" that is being assumed by some. When you have a team, when you have a company etc and you have a prima dona only interested in themselves, that invariably tears the organization down no matter how brilliant or skilled that individual is. In the case of Yukon they have lost their luster. So even less attractive. I don't see the net gain for anyone but Yukon. I do see the immediate and long term negatives.

Things are good and getting better. Yukon, BC, Pitt, Syr - all yesterday's bad news. Move on to bigger, better things.

UConn may have lost some luster, but their incoming freshmen class is ranked 5th, 6th, 8th & 9th by Scout, USA Today, 247Sports & ESPN, respectively. Not bad ... and far above the nearest BE team.

Far above the Johnnie's and their vaunted incoming class???

I am not in favor of the BE accepting UCON but that is not my decision to make. I am against any State school because they have unlimited access to taxpayers money to fund, improve, or expand their brand.

If any State school is allowed in they should be limited in their budget to the average of the BE teams. that in addition to parking their football program elsewhete

I am totally against UCONN and any other school with a D-1 football team. That is what the new Big East was created for. We wanted Basketball centric schools that is exactly what we have. Let's not adulterate it with the likes of UCONN

No State schools! They do not fit our profile. Uconn would have the biggest athletic budget in the conference and as I stated repeatedly it would hurt St. John's the most, even if 7 of the 10 Big East schools wanted Uconn. Dayton and St. Louis are the only two schools I would invite should the Big East expand.
Regardless, this is a premature discussion here because Uconn has made it clear that they are willing to wait until the Big 12 makes a decision on expansion. I could care less if they eventually went to the ACC which could take years because by then Jim Boeheim and Mike Rat Face Shrewzinki will be retired or dead, preferably dead.

Is Connecticut really a state? It's more like a big county.

Unless the network increases the tv fees why would the current schools take in anyone?

An interesting observation. Expansion is usually linked to media partnership agreement and Fox probably has some influence here. Also, Uconn is actually trying to position itself in a Power 5 conference where football money pays all the bills. Moving to the Big East would spell the demise of their football program. Finally, I am not sure Uconn gains very much financially from a move to the Big East without its football program. Staying in the AAC also means going to the NCAA tournament almost every year because they would be top Dawgs in their conference.

At the time of the announcement of the original contract it was mentioned that should the BE expand during the contract there was a clause that the revenue would increase accordingly so as not to hurt the bottom lines of the original 10 programs. I'm sure Fox would have a little say of course and I'm sure they also wanted this clause so that no cheapo program would try and stop the conference from bringing in a marquis program simply to protect their revenue.

What trumps that argument is 4 NCAA titles in 17 years (1999, 2004, 2011, 2014) exactly 4 more than we have in 100+ years. Since our 85 Final 4 is so precious to us, for good measure UCONN has 5 final 4 appearances, ranking 13th of all college programs. They've gone to the NCAA tournament 33 times, 20 times since 1990 (so much for losing their luster). If getting to the second round of the NCAA's in 2016 is losing your luster, I wonder just how bad a program we have - what has it been for us 15 year since getting that far.

I would vote them down simply because I hate teams that have left our league, but there is no question UCONN would make the Big East a stronger conference. I also think it would be one more team for us to climb over to get to the dance, but in the end, money will dictate and if UCONN wants back in, will be welcomed.

But again, I hated the program before they left, and would love to see them excluded should they want back in.

But you make such a good argument for having them in ... (Are you a Pisces by any chance? :) )

It's mostly because once someone bails on me, I have hard time doing something in their best interest. Letting UCONN in would serve their best interest (for now at least until a bigger conference invites them for all sports). But there is no question should they be readmitted that the league would be stronger for it, probably to our competitive detriment even if to our monetary gain.

Dayton yes, but if we are going to go with a program from Richmond, it should be the University of Richmond which fits in with the other programs as a private institution while VCU is not.

Right about VCU. If one's anti-UConn position is that it's a state school with a huge budget, then how is a state school from Virginia okay?

My personal opinion is no state schools and no football schools. If no schools fit that criterion then let's stay at 10

I am only adding to this thread because it's August and basketball still seems a long way off :p That being said, I get the reasons why people would be in favor of not adding UConn, I also understand why some would like to see them added, even with restrictions. At the end of the day, both arguments have validity, it's just a matter of what is more important to your rationale (i.e. loyalty vs improving overall profile of the conference). What we seem to sometimes forget is that the Big East has only been in existence for 3 years in its new format. In year one we sent 4 out 10 teams to the NCAA, in year two we sent six and had victories against schools like Texas & Mississippi St., in year three we sent 5 & won the National Championship, beating schools like Kansas & UNC along the way. It took the original Big East 5 years to win it's first National Championship, Georgetown in 1984. I am not saying anything that everyone here doesn't already know. For the record I am of the opinion that we should stay at 10, I don't want any part of schools that either play football or left (or were looking to leave) the Big East. Yes, UConn has done more than just about any basketball program has done since the 90's, I get it. But the Big East is only 3 years old and already has a basketball national championship. Hell thanks to Denver we even have a Lacrosse national title.

We will never send all 10 teams to the Tournament obviously, but I guarantee you that if the recent regulars (Providence, Xavier, Butler) start making noise similar to what Villanova did last year, or the non regulars (St. John's, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Marquette) start becoming regulars in addition to the others having success in March, no one will be talking about whether we should or should not add UConn.

I'd love VCU, but since the current BE teams would likely have the same concerns as posters here regarding large state schools, I'd rather have Davidson over Richmond.

I wouldn't argue much if it were Davidson instead of Richmond.
