Big East & UConn

I don't see why they would want to join the Big East. The AAC as bad is it is would only lose Houston if the article is correct. It will still probably be the strongest football conference outside of the Big 5 and with Memphis, Cincinnati and Temple, Tulsa and SMU it is not that bad a basketball conference. The University of Connecticut has been doing just fine in that conference.

I think the next great wave of expansion will be a race to 16, so the AAC will eventually be ripped apart. Memphis and Cincy will eventually be gone. UConn is in a tough position, tougher than I think a lot of their fans realize.

As I've posted before, the attractiveness of their men's and women's programs (in a league of its own) coupled with the fact that their football program draws better than Duke's, makes me think the ACC (overall not a football powerhouse) will eventually be embracing them ... and that's something I would absolutely hate to see.

According to the above linked article (who knows if it is accurate) Yukon reportedly is no longer under consideration for Big 12 expansion.
great news !

Why?
because the longer they are in limbo the longer my uconn friends worry

Have to admit seeing their fans humbled and worried is very satisfying.

There's only one spot left in the ACC unless the Big 10 and the SEC try to raid them to fill out their own conferences. I'm not even sure what kind of contracts the current ACC teams had to sign. If everyone is locked in, I think the ACC could easily opt to just bring in Navy for football only and not worry about anything else.

I don't think UConn outdrawing Duke football means anything. Has UConn football ever had a decent season? It doesn't matter if Duke football has traditionally been sucky; they are already in. Why bring in a school that weakens the product further? As for other factors, I think Temple makes more sense than UConn market wise. Academics wise, might as well go for Tulane or even Rice.

I stand by UConn's best shot being the Big 12, and even there they will have to squeak in. If everyone stays in the Big 12, I think Houston, BYU, Cincy, and Memphis definitely get in. That would leave only two spots left for UConn, and that could be years down the road. They might not be worth shit by then.

The powers that be have a tough decision -- wait for expansion that may screw them again, or put football in CUSA or the Mid-American and rejoin the Big East.

Well said, but I think you underestimate the attractiveness of having UConn's men's and women's basketball programs in the basketball-arrogant (and basketball-obnoxious) ACC. Temple certainly has a much, much better football program than UConn, but how many national championships has its men's and women's basketball teams won in the past 20 years? None. None ever, in fact, unless you figure in the men winning the 1938 NIT.

The football ratings drive this nonsense. Hoops is a distant secondary factor. We're lucky Fox paid the BE decent bucks for hoops.

Maybe the state of Connecticut should terminate their college football team and spend the money to fix their crappy highway before the end of this century. Connecticut can win women's basketball games by 100 points but can't finish a basic highway construction project for ten years.

One big factor in the Big 12 or for that matter any of the other big conferences is that the tv contracts they have require them to pay a certain amount to each team in the conference. In the Big 12 or maybe the Big 10 I believe the number is 20 million a team. This is for football. So these media outlets will not and will oppose and pressure the leagues not to bring in a team unless that team is going to add big time to their draw. Otherwise, they dont want it and wont pay the league. This is UCONN big problem as their football program is not so big time to bring in the revenue the media wants

That explains why the Big 12, Big 10, and certainly the SEC would have no interest (with the possible exception of the Big 12) would have no interest in taking on UConn ... but the ACC is a different story.

If anyone wanted UConn they would already be in that conference. Also, everyone is putting BYU in the Big 12, but BYU has a very captive and very loyal alumni base. Their football program does extremely well as an independent. It would be interesting if BYU refuses them.

It will all shake out in time.

East Carolina says it was informed by Big 12 it is no longer an expansion candidate.

Would think UConn will receive same any day now.

If UCONN is ever readmitted to the Big East they should have to pay an exit fee should they depart for greener pastures. If so, I just hope SJU legal doesn't negotiate the contract. We'd end up owing them millions if they depart after one season :)

Our AD is very experienced at such matters. Oh wait.

This is one school I truly feel bad for, because they've worked hard at improving, the fan base is rabid, and they will NEVER see the inside of a real conference.

Interesting twist - article indicates uconn as finalist but under consideration for b12 football only with other sports going to big east.

In my opinion the Big 12 made a circus out of this & knows who the final four are for probably two spots. The conference will probably get their's when Texas & Oklahoma leave for greener pastures not too far down the road.

Re; UConn, I doubt they get in & I think Calhoun, Ollie camp yearns for & supports BE for hoops. Basketball attendance has suffered as I understand it, playing in mediocre AAC.
