Big East & UConn

If UConn wants back in they will be accepted. The BE will make the decision based on more rational business considerations not old grudges of the sort expressed on various BE fan boards.

If the Big 12 were to take say, Cinncy and Houston, the AAC is dead. UConn will then HAVE to bolt in order to save its storied b-ball program from mid major hell. At that point Memphis may be willing to consider the same and the BE would be wise to attempt to grab them both if the opportunity presents itself.

Lets not blame UCONN for wanting to leave the BE when the writing was on the wall. IMO SJU would have jumped at the chance to join the ACC after Syracuse and UL left, we even had a thread about it. UCONN has a great BB tradition and lets not discount their womans program. If their FB joins another conference and they join the BE w a clause that cost them big $ if they leave, I'm ok w it.

It would be a no- brainer to admit UConn to the Big East PROVIDED Yukon agrees to (x) an assignment of it's media rights for a 20 year period as the ACC schools have agreed to, or (y) a hefty - say $25M buy out indexed for inflation.

I disagree and don't see a good result from Yukon for all kinds of reasons but that said. It would certainly benefit Yukon but the BEC is doing well and on the upswing. Every team in the conference is on the rise. Xavier was on the verge of falling into complete irrelevancy. Creighton was the mid-major prototype. Now Xavier was a power player in the Tourney and Creighton is recruiting nationally and setting attendance records. Even Depaul is going to benefit from new facilities. Nova a consistent top 5 and national champ. I'm so sick of the grass is always greener crap. Yukon was always a sleezy, bad partner. And St John's got the worst of it from them going back to shady recruiting tactics -starting way back when they were bottom feeders, to eroding media market share. You guys that want them back are masochists.

Why bring in a team on the slide who has separate interests? That has worked out so well for us! The BE is already in the primary Yukon markets. Why bring in a team that will benefit from recruiting exposure while add nothing in kind for the other schools and conversely compete more strongly against the existing schools? It's a sucker deal for all but Yukon. Also I don't believe $25M buyout would be considered hefty (enough) based upon the scale of current media if it is actually intended to make a buyout prohibitive.

If the Schools in the Big East take care of business, they will continue to improve their standing nationally. We certainly have the schools to make this happen. If they don't even the addition of a team that spurned us for greener pastures will not help us

This sounds like the deal (shaft) that Notre Dame gave the old Big East. They can park their football up their ass it would not change the fact that joining the Big East still seems like a last resort to this big state school that no longer fits the Big East profile. They would compete with both St. John's and Providence for NY area recruits along with Syracuse. Also, why would an assignment of media rights be different than any existing provisions for current members? The $25m buyout would be challenged in the courts and is not enough should the ACC come calling ( see Maryland vs. ACC). NOW, if an ironclad $50 million buyout were the case and all the schools agreed to the same media rights provisions, then two years hence the Big East could benefit but imo, at the expense of both St. John's and Providence. Finally, being very familiar with their women's basketball program, every team in the current Big East would become second class programs in comparison while Geno Auriemma is still there. Until Mullin proves he can coach this would hurt St. John's more than any other team in the Big East.

Any agreement with Yukon to re-enter BE should include funds to payoff Slice as he exits.

BE should not allow in FBS school in, period. It has nothing to do with them recruiting in the same area as we do (they already do and have been doing it for years), nor is it due to sour grapes or revenge for them leaving the BE (although if the ACC or some other Big football school had come calling, they assuredly would have left but in the end they left because remaining BE football and basketball schools decided the conference as constituted with the new teams wasn't going to work).

It has everything to do with interests and UCONN's interest is still tied up in joining a big conference with their entire program. This would be settling on their part. Yes you can try to include a cost prohibitive buy-out in order for them to leave again but will that really preclude them from leaving or trying to find some loop hole to do so?

There are other good programs that fit our Conference's profile better than UConn at this point and if we are going to expand, let's look at them instead of ND 2.0.

UConn is going to need the big east a lot more than we need UConn if the big 12 starts poaching.

Ironclad 50 million dollar buyout. Nothing less

It's not like we are competing with anyone to take them because if they had a better opportunity they would have taken it already

I'd make it $75 million to $100 million.

You are right -- they have no better offer. They are five years or less from complete permanent irrelevancy in basketball if they don't get into a real conference.

Perfectly on point and it is shocking that others can't see this. The conference is doing very well and this is without SJU , Georegetown and Marquette having it together. If those 3 or any combination can get their act together , which I believe we are , the conference will be even stronger. Why do our fans continue to live in the past just amazes me.

I'm fine with your higher number too. Take it or leave it. The only negotiating begins once they agree upfront to the higher buyout. That just gets them to the table to talk about other things

Honestly the only way I even see them helping our schools is with ticket sales because they travel well but if we turn the program around like we all hope than that shouldn't matter either and if we have to rely on another school to help sell tickets to one game then that says a lot more about us than them,

We need to play major hardball with them. I could care less if they join anymore but I'd like Memphis ( for road trip purposes )

On paper, having Memphis and UConn would look good. But I'd rather have Memphis and someone else at this point. At the very least, I'd like to see UConn twist for a while before we admit them.

I'd like another area for a recruiting footprint. Maybe St Louis or something with easy travel

I'm sensing a theme. Maher wants schools with fantastic regional BBQ

next he'll be making a case for U Maine - best lobster rolls in the world...

I'd be all over maine. Google some place I heard about yesterday called " reds eats "

I'm actually going right now to eat a lobster roll down in huntington village :)

We should expand to 16 and not invite UConn just to really rub it in.

Memphis, St. Louis, Dayton, VCU, Davidson, and Wichita State.

Or Memphis, St. Louis, Maine, College of Charleston, Tulane, and San Francisco for mjmaher food and drink and nudity purposes.

Let them go back to the Yankee Conference if it still exists !
