Big East & UConn

UConn is going to need the big east a lot more than we need UConn if the big 12 starts poaching.
It's not like we are competing with anyone to take them because if they had a better opportunity they would have taken it already

Perfectly on point and it is shocking that others can't see this. The conference is doing very well and this is without SJU , Georegetown and Marquette having it together. If those 3 or any combination can get their act together , which I believe we are , the conference will be even stronger. Why do our fans continue to live in the past just amazes me.

Honestly the only way I even see them helping our schools is with ticket sales because they travel well but if we turn the program around like we all hope than that shouldn't matter either and if we have to rely on another school to help sell tickets to one game then that says a lot more about us than them,

We need to play major hardball with them. I could care less if they join anymore but I'd like Memphis ( for road trip purposes )
Once again correct on all counts. We should not have to count on them to help us sell tickets. I attended SJU from 1981-1983 when we were good and very good and tickets were always sold out.
We need to be strong and we will sell out the Garden.

I wonder what Stu Jackson & Val A want. Suspect they have had discussions with UConn as Andy Katz of ESPN hinted about several weeks ago. I hope our AD is front & center representing SJU interests. Oh, wait a minute. :)

I don't think our President is well versed in this matter, but that's just my gut. Perhaps that's unfair.

That is unfair. He is probably not versed at all. ;)

Lets not blame UCONN for wanting to leave the BE when the writing was on the wall. IMO SJU would have jumped at the chance to join the ACC after Syracuse and UL left, we even had a thread about it. UCONN has a great BB tradition and lets not discount their womans program. If their FB joins another conference and they join the BE w a clause that cost them big $ if they leave, I'm ok w it.

We can argue long and hard whether or not to blame Uconn for bolting the BE for greener pastures. But it is more than just that.

If they were invited to the ACC or Big 12, they would have happily taken the money and ran so far, so fast, it would have impressed Usain Bolt. But, since their grand vision has failed, they now want a do-over. Well, actions have consequences. They took a risk, and lost big. Too bad for them.

Let everyone in charge at that state University have to respond fot wasting money on a football stadium no one cares about. Let them deal with having to explain why they left the certainty of basketball success and financial rewards (the old BE), due to an over inflated ego, for unfounded riches.

What makes Uconn too big to fail? They played a shaky hand, and lost. As a result, the BE shouldn't be in the bailout business.

This has been previously discussed on this site
Apparently, Yukon sees no future in remaining in the AAC
Clearly, Yukon would like to join the Big 12
Should they not be successful, they would be interested in joining the Big East
If accepted, they would look to hook up with another league for football only
To me, any school that left the Big East should never be taken back
Good riddance, Yukon, you made your bed, now you can lie in it!!
Not sticking up for UCONN and not saying that they didn't want to leave. But, they didn't leave the Big East. SJU et al left UCONN, along with Cincinnati and others.

We should expand to 16 and not invite UConn just to really rub it in.

Memphis, St. Louis, Dayton, VCU, Davidson, and Wichita State.

Or Memphis, St. Louis, Maine, College of Charleston, Tulane, and San Francisco for mjmaher food and drink and nudity purposes.
Let's really rub it in. Central Connecticut, Quinnpiac, Sacred Heart and Fairfield.

Let's say the Big 12 poaches some of the AAC schools.

Then UConn is in a bit of a lurch.
Why can't the Big East wait on deciding to whether to allow UConn to come into the conference?
The Big East would basically be negotiating against itself at that point. The conference really doesn't have to make a fast decision on this. I really hope they take their time in deciding this.

I agree with some of the above sentiment that St. John's has the most to lose if UConn came into the Big East.
So make UConn wait - there is no reason to take them immediately. A couple of years of Uconn in a hurt might make negotiating with them even easier.

I would bring them back. It will help the conference both in the short term and long term.
I would also try to go to 16 and bring in St Louis, Wichita State and Memphis with them.

Adding one of the most successful, high-profile programs in past 20 years+ to the new Big East will only make the conference stronger, more creditable, and more respected, as well as a more attractive draw on TV -- which, in turn, translates to being more attractive to elite recruits. (Think adding a program like St. Louis would do that? Please!) And instead of criticizing UConn fans for filling the Garden (pure sour grapes), let's emulate them -- and I have enough confidence in Mullin to believe that's doable. And as stated in earlier posts, no matter how much some of us would like it to happen, UConn is not going to crawl into a corner and die. And if the BE doesn't admit them, it's only a matter of time before the ACC or another power 5 conference finds a way of adding them (I see Coach K drooling) ... and that won't help the Big East at all.

That would initially be hilarious, but when we woke up the next day to find Central Connecticut, Quinnpiac, Sacred Heart, and Fairfield cuddling with us, we'd want to chew off our own arm to escape.

Ironclad 50 million dollar buyout. Nothing less

I'd make it $75 million to $100 million.

You are right -- they have no better offer. They are five years or less from complete permanent irrelevancy in basketball if they don't get into a real conference.

Let them go back to the Yankee Conference if it still exists !

General, with all due respect, based on histories over the past 15 years, it's St. John's, not UConn, that would better qualify for the Yankee Conference.

P.S. Hope you're healing nicely.

The ACC also has 15 teams -- if they really wanted UConn they'd be there by now.

Think it was BC that squashed it before it even picked up steam. They are a dying program if they don't get into the Big 12.

LJSA, based on statements made by Coach K in the past couple of years, I've no doubt the ACC would find a way to gobble up a powerful, prestigious tri-state basketball program like UConn (not the mention the UConn women!) rather than see them join the Big East (a perceived threat to ACC basketball superiority) or another power 5 conference. As for BC, that's a completely different story. In the era of big-time TV money, it's not about about loyalty or tradition; it's about numbers ... and UConn (both men and women) draw sizable numbers. Better for us if they draw them as a Big East school.

Better for us if they draw them as a Big East school.

Why?

Was referring to TV viewership and exposure, which would benefit the conference ... instead of benefiting another one.

As for any lack of interest by the ACC because of UConn's football program, Duke's stadium holds 40,000 (until two years ago, it was 33,900), the same as UConn's. Plus, UConn averaged 38,200+ last season, while in recent years Duke has averaged fewer than 30,000.

I doubt there is much of a net gain. Outside of the NY Metro there are not many Yukon fans. How much have they helped the AAC? I don't know the answer but it would be less helpful for the Big East already in their primary markets.

bottom line is what will make the CONFERENCE stronger. Adding UCONN will only make the BE better. I would add them and and maybe one more team with a basketball rich history. I like the way the league is now. Its kind of like a throw back to the 80s. Dayton is # 42 on all time wins list, they would be my addition along with UCONN. I like Memphis but they have a strong fb program too. Definitely a huge buyout either way.

When Boston College left the Big East years ago Jim Calhoun and Conn treated that move as if BC was the devil. The current Big East should treat Conn in a similar way. Keep them out.
