Big East Media Day

Mike Anderson said Josh Roberts has put on 10 pounds of muscle and has looked good of late. "He's starting to do some things I envisioned him doing last year." #sjubb
Good to hear. Now I'd like to see Caraher become a lights out shooter

Preseason All-Big East First Team:
David Duke Jr., Providence
Collin Gillespie, Villanova
Sandro Mamukelashvili, Seton Hall
Charlie Moore, DePaul
Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Villanova

Second Team:
Mitch Ballock, Creighton
James Bouknight, UConn
Justin Moore, Villanova
Bryce Nze, Butler
Paul Scruggs, Xavier
Nate Watson, Providence

Creighton's Marcus Zegarowski named #BIGEASThoops preseason Player of the Year, while Marquette's Dawson Garcia is preseason Freshman of the Year.

So the presumptive player of the year doesn't make either first or second team All BE. How is that?
They always add to POY w next 5 I assume to spread the “wealth”

Now we know why we haven't heard much from CMA about Cole's contributions; he hasn't been practicing! Let's hope knee injury doesn't linger.

Yup. I think this gives greg williams a big advantage for the starting 2 guard spot. It looks like cole will be coming off the bench at least to start the season.

If jumper is a bit more consistent, watch out. Quiet, unflappable player who will evolve into a leader as well.

"My confidence level has gone up. I've just been working on my jumpshot and most of my leadership skills" -- Julian Champagnie. #sjubb

Fanta
Julian Champagnie says he told himself to relax at the end of last season, and credited his teammates for the way he was able to find a rhythm. Champagnie averaged nearly 14 and 8 in his final 10 games of his freshman season.

They said it’s only a knee bruise, it’s not a high ankle sprain or ligament type issue so I’m hopeful he’ll be ok. But I agree .

I'm far from a ledger dweller, but don't we hear a few comments like this about our team during every preseason? And I'm not counting the ones that come from our fans ;)
Get what you're saying Monte, those that have been sleeping on St. John's over the last bunch of years have unfortunately been able to stay asleep. :(

don't know how to link but the interviews are now up on redstormsports.com.

I was intrigued to hear St. John’s reaction to being picked to finish ninth. The response was nothing more than a shrug, from coach Mike Anderson and his players. They didn’t feel the need to talk big about proving people wrong. My take: St. John’s displayed a quiet confidence. The Johnnies believe they’re better than where the Big East coaches slotted them, but there is nothing they can do right now to disprove it.

Multiple people who’ve been around the program believe it’s an upgraded group from last year, because of depth, versatility and likemindedness. Everyone there was either recruited by Anderson or believes in his system. They are all on the same page. That wasn’t necessarily the case last year.

I did not have an issue with St. John’s being picked ninth. There are questions that need to be answered, namely who will be The Guy down the stretch after leading scorer LJ Figueroa transferred to Oregon. Early indications are it will be Champagnie. A frequent practice-goer told me he’s “by far” the team’s best player. Champagnie, an All-Big East Freshman Team selection last year, seemed very sure of himself on Wednesday, speaking like a leader and echoing Anderson’s talking points. I’m excited to see what steps forward he can take after enjoying such a strong freshman season.

When watching the "press conference", I said to my wife that the kids had the right response to finishing ninth. It appears CMA is not only coaching the young men on the court but he is working with their life skills. This was one of the things that Greg Williams said when talking about CMA's coaching the team.

Let them rank us where they want: zero chance we finish 9th this year. We are deep and have some talent. Defense will hawk teams all game, every game. Time for Iron Mike to get the other coaches to respect him more. He should have a chip on his shoulder as well.
Is 9th place still on the bubble? Maybe for the NIT.
It's not a certain place in conference that automatically gets you in the tournament, it's other factors as well. Theoretically a team can finish 9th in the conference and make the NCAA tournament over a team that finished 6th or 7th in conference, if they had more quality wins, a better NET ranking, and stronger non-conference schedule. There's been times where 6th and 10th place was literally only a one win difference.

With that said, Big East isn't perceived as strong this year as recent years, most bracketologist think it's only a 5 bid league this year, and with less non-conference games, it's going to be really important to get off to a good start, especially against Boston College and Texas Tech, because those are really the only quality wins you can pick-up in the non-conference this year.
