Our guys can change a lot of peoples perspective starting Wednesday night including mine which has taken a big hit. It would be just like this team to go and wake up now for a memorable run. Just when almost all have given up. Come on guys. Make it happen.
When they wake up is one of them going to be 6'10" 260 pounds, with low post moves and shot blocking ability?
We can win this no matter a big or not. Will we win is the question. Based on our play recently no. Based on how we can potentially play yes. If our guys play to their good potential and stop this free fall play we can win big man for us or not.
I'm gonna keep it real, these big physical school been treating us like their bitches.
It's f'ing time to take a stand and punch back.
Beat DePaul with speed, don't dribble, just pass, pass, pass, shoot or layup.

Show DePaul on Wednesday that we're not losing again for the 3rd time, payback is a mother.

Lets see what they have. Will they fight back or get punked again.

BRING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good post, 1512.

We're an easy team to defend if we're not hitting jumpers or getting out on the break. Turn it into a halfcourt game, and our offense can be easily dictated.

Overreliance on man-to-man on the defensive end has been deadly for us, especially when you have a team who is determined to do work on the blocks. Outside of Strus going wild behind the arc (practically, running the same down screen to get Strus free) when we last faced DePaul.... The Blue Demons (particularly, the first game when we faced 'em) along with Providence and Xavier have been patient running their offense until they get the proper switch (per our switching man) which allows a mismatch.

Once they get us scrambling around like a chicken with its head cut off, we double on the blocks or both, then they'll kick it out to a wide open player on the perimeter. The player may not exactly be a good shooter, but once he has an hour to set up and shoot, then there's a good chance he'll knock it down.

The more film on us has made us an easy prepare. We overwhelmed some teams like Creighton and the first Marquette game just simply due to those teams not being able to contend with our speed, and neither team are gonna exactly punish you on the blocks. More finesse type teams.

For the 101st time.... If this staff knew how to teach a reliable 1-3-1 or 1-2-2 zone, then I doubt we'd be having this conversation. It'd be perfect for the type of personnel we have on this team.

Every team has the entire book on our defense. And against teams with any bigs the book is no longer working! Best way to beat DePaul is to change the book. Don't switch every screen. Decide which matchups to switch and which to hedge and go back. They'll be so prepared for how we've done it all year it's likely it'll take them out of their rhythm and force them to adjust. When they start to figure it out, go to the zone, then back to switching every screen then away from it again. Stop being so freaking stubborn and one dimensional. Play with their heads a bit. Make them adjust from what they've planned and make them adjust unexpectedly on the fly. At the least we'll get a few extra bad possessions from them. Jerk their chains. Every advantage we can get will help. But mainly get as far away from the book that's lost us 6 games to mediocre teams that just happen to have some bigs! Please Chris, get a little creative and make DePaul adjust to us.

Against all better judgment, I find myself looking at the bracket and thinking to myself that if we can win on Wednesday there’s a path for us to the BET finals. We’ve played well against Marquette Seton Hall and GTown this year.

We’ve also had great crowds. If we take this game, maybe we can pack MSG and get some results.

Please forgive the delusional ramblings of this one fan.....
Those great crowds were filled with people who are now disinterested. St. John's has long been a sleeping giant. But, those non-die hard fans are not coming out to see a team that limped into March.
We may have lost a few bandwagon fans through our recent play, that's true. But it is also true that IF (BIG IF) we can get by a DePaul team that has given us fits this year, then every other BE fan in attendance Thursday - as well as the unbiased New Yorkers in attendance - will be rooting for us.

Beat DePaul.

This very well could be Ponds last game at MSG. There has to be huge motivation to light it up in the BET for Ponds. He has so much riding on how long SJU's season lasts and how well he plays in his final games.

Despite height disadvantage, our guys MUST (get our share of) rebounds off defensive glass which ignites our superior transition game. We must crash the offensive boards to get second looks and putbacks. We must be smart on defense and not get beaten to spots and then commit stupid fouls trying to block shots when we are late to the game. Our top 5 must stay on the floor as long as possible.

Even with a weaker bench, we should give limited minutes to Williams and Earlington. We'll see if Keita plays - I have a feeling he's cashed his chips but we will see. If so, now would be a perfect time for him to show why staff called him a beast preseason.

Losing three times to one team is tough, especially an improved but still second division DePaul. As of right now, this is the dance - a single loss tonight and beyond the BET ends their season. Time for a gut check. Our guys must come up big or go home and wonder what the heck happened to such a promising season.

A good zone is harder to play than a good man. In terms of a 1-3-1, Syracuse recruits very long, athletic wings as the key to that success and is never short on height. Even in a zone, its very hard to neutralize height disadvantage, and much easier to be out of position and lose a man. I am not certain, but I may have heard Mullin's staff use the term matchup zone, which is essentially a man with lots of help.

Back in Queens, we'd use the term zone busters to describe teams that had kids that could shoot over a zone with accuracy that forced the zone to be spread wide. The wider you make the zone spread, the more you can attack the seams, not only for layups and drives to the hoop, but mid range jumpers.

In essence, your initial comments were the most accurate - make your shots, and rebound well enough to get out in transition. Our guys can easily create 4 on 3's, 3 on 2's, even 2 or 3 on 1 breaks by being relentless pushing the ball up the floor. We seem to do that frequently, but our guys settle for 20 foot jumpers instead of getting to the foul line or deeper for pullup shots.

Our shorter team may need to be more cognizant of position when shots are launched. Please bury the shoot and retreat philosophy and adopt shoot and follow up instead. Box out and induce their bigs into committing fouls.

BOX OUT! Please!
I picked us to win @DePaul and @X so im just gonna say

DePaul 88
SJU 82

reverse psychology!
117-64 DePaul!

I think the key is Simon staying out of foul trouble. Even with all the other issues in the last game we were winning when he had to go to the bench with his third foul. It’s not a coincidence that Strus ignited from that point on.

We're favored by 5.5... if Vegas is still worth anything at this point...

What’s our record against the spread when we are favored this season?

In Big East games, probably about .500.

Let's not forget the last game, we were up by 9 at halftime, and still about even until about 10 minutes left. If not for Strus with an other worldly performance we may have won. That is even despite the fact that the refs completely handcuffed us by calling the game the way they did.

We had 34 fouls called on us last time and Justin could only play 27 minutes due to foul trouble, plus Depaul shot 57% from the field and 76% from line making 32-42 free throws. Just don't see those things happening tomorrow night. I also felt good about Xavier game, but think I'm due to be right on this one. Depaul shows a little MSG nerves and Johnnies come out with huge effort to get to Thursday night!

In an attempt at catharsis, I would like to formally reiterate that I am thoroughly pissed to (again) be playing on Wednesday in the BE Tournament.

Thank you.
