His mind doesn't have to go back any further than the last game, as they've lost 3 in a row, 4 of 5, and 5 of 8 almost the exact same way they lost on Saturday.
Crushed on the boards (particularly offensive rebounding disparity), crushed on second chance points, crushed on points in the paint, crushed in free throw attempts/made, and crushed on bench points.
The last of these has the potentially season-long as well as in-game cumulative effect on wearing down the starters, which is probably a big reason SJU has lost 9 of 10 2nd halves since January ended. Let alone finishing the season looking fatigued as has largely been the case. When you are reliant upon 5 guys at 30 mpg or more (with nobody else above even 20mpg), and a large % of the total production, this is what can happen
This is not the players' fault. They played insanely hard for a large majority of the season, were primarily reliant on 5 players, and won multiple games (Cal, VCU, GTech, @Gtown, @Marq, Butler, and Nova come to mind) largely on guts and effort. Couple of those games go the other direction and we are talking about needing to win the BET, not just beat DePaul.
Hopefully they'll get a little adrenaline bump to restart things a little bit. But the staff owes it to this team to try something different (1) specifically to beat DePaul, and (2) perhaps more importantly something different than what has driven many of the recent losses, particularly in the 2nd half. It's been like watching the same game over and over.
Particular area of focus might be settling less for jumpers and getting more action going towards the basket / get to free throw line. We have become way too perimeter oriented. Accomplishing this will require actual strategy as teams are clearly just loading up and daring us to shoot it. Particularly with Ponds, they are going 1 and 2 under almost every time he gets it. Think about how many (incredible) buckets Ponds was getting at the rim earlier in the season, even a month ago. Teams have really shut that off of late and we would benefit from opening that back up, getting Ponds the ball on the move and at different angles to change the look defensively.
