Bingo. I truly believe that if we played better defense we had a shot yesterday. Obviously scoring 90 and losing a college game is not good. Giving up 95 with way, way too many easy buckets is disappointing.

However, this was a problem all season long. I think RP tried to course correct. We looked like we showed a little zone yesterday. No matter. We just didn’t get the commitment to D or the guys just aren’t good enough defensive players.
With all due respect, and you are not alone, the problem yesterday was not the defense when it set up but rather the leak out easy points because first, we did not maintain court balance and second, just did not bust our tails getting back on defense. Accounted for 3 or 4 uncontested layups and the same in wide open transition 3’s. Add in the scramble points UConn got off loose balls and late offensive rebounds by Spencer and Karaban and we probably gifted UConn 15-20 points.
Uconn is a really good team with a lot of weapons and they are going to score, it is the points described above that made the difference.

I generalized defense. I consider court balance and getting back as “defense”. I pointed it out in the game thread when Brady missed a jumper and somehow he hustled and was the ONLY SJU player who got back. Court Balance of course. Bad Defense…that too.

However, I do disagree with the defense when it “set up“ comment. I remember several 3s that a UCONN pass, pass wide open 3. Set up D was not so good /great either. How many times can you lose shooters?

Anyway,I think we all agree giving up 95 in a college game is not gonna get it done.

Most games, when you get 90pnts that's a win.

This has been a problem forever. It's simple to fix: FREE COURTSIDE seats and FREE TRANSPORTATION to and from MSG for 1,000 students.
Maybe we are not admitting Students that like BB and would support it ?

After 2 Decades of lousy BB , the resurgence this year should be a igniter of School Spirit .

Students are allowed to be vocal supporters and paint their faces Red and yell and root loudly .
If they don’t , they are missing a experience of their college years .

I also realize that a few years of making a deep run in the NCAAs would also be a big help. To quote a famous whisper in a corn field, "If you build it they will come."

You are aware that we led the league in blocked shots, by a lot, right?
That’s all in the half court though. We press and get beat and we have no one on the back end that a true rim protector to stop the layup. If you’re going to press as much as us you need a true rim protector on the back end and we don’t have it. Soriano gets beat down court every time.

I get he is Coaches father. However, at one point he was literally on the bench then the floor when they were screaming at O’Grady. Weird.
Pitino should have asked security to escort Hurley's father away from the bench. He had no reason being there. If this was done, Danny Hurley would have exploded into maybe two technical fouls.

The only reason I can think of for Hurley's father for being in the bench area is he might have been his son's designated bodyguard in case Danny antagonized a fan or two and started to get his ass kicked.

Being a big fan of then CHSAA, you always knew Curran was one of the gentlemen of sport. Of course his best Molly team was the Kenny Anderson/Robert Werdann squad, who were like rock stars when they came to your gym (like they did during my high school days at St. John’s Prep).

But he was a teacher, in the classroom and the basketball court.
Throw in the fact he was also a great baseball coach for many years and is in the NYC high school hall of fame for both sports.
I saw Kenny and company at Holy Cross, and got to meet Looie during a Molloy game. Nicest guy ever.

The true stud of that Molloy team was Ralph James IMO.

My point is a UConn is going to score, no matter how good your D is; they run good offense, space the floor well, move without the ball, share the ball, shoot well, etc. So IMO, they are going to get a certain amount of open looks; I don’t think there was an inordinate amount of those against out D when set up but that is a subjective judgement so I certainly understand that maybe you did. Anyway, I can generally accept those, part of the game.
What I can’t accept is what I referenced, ‘gift” points through lack of a commitment to running the court hard, fighting hard for the ball and playing basic fundamental basketball which the lack of by SJU was clearly the difference in the game to me.

Petino is71. Joe Lapchick was forced to retire when he hit 70. Why?
No disrespect for Carnesecca but had Joe stayed we would have had a national championship
Wasn’t it 60 or 65 for Lapchick?
