Attendance

Justin Turri, lacrosse coach promised that the whole team was going to the game that night.

He assured that his guys "are going to lead from the front" and "show the Red Zone what type of student section Coach is looking for!”

Lacrosse bros. did exactly that. You've got to love this. Makes me want to attend some of their games. Another PHD coach and team. Something special brewing there.

Would be great if they could get all the sports into the student section on one side and class of 72 has mentioned this before but somehow get the frats and sororities involved and all together on the other side.

Kranmars might remember better than me but when I wasn't doing the games on wsju at MSG I sat behind one of the baskets and there was definitely a fraternity or 2 all together sitting right next to me and were a lot of fun at games. I forget which year or if it was when I was out of school ( I had same seats ) that red tuxedo guy they picked him up and he crowd surfed behind the basket on top of the frats one of the games and it might have been against his will. lolololol

I actually reached out to the AD about how great the lax team was and go the following response.

“We are excited as well … it was a vocal crowd on Wednesday and I do give a lot of credit to the lacrosse team as well. In fact, they are now the starting point of a new tradition … we are going to have a “Team of the Game” in those same seats … next up – baseball in the Marquette game and softball in the Villanova game. Our coaches and student-athletes are excited to continue the energy and excitement!

More good news … we have over 1,200 students with tickets for the Marquette game and over 900 for the Villanova game. In fact – all of our games we are looking at very full and overflowing student sections.

Appreciate your support and thanks for checking in as well!

Go Johnnies!”

Good news

Here's a chart of 2022/23 average attendance top 40 to look at that confirms your supposition. A couple things skew these statistics. Most these teams play in arenas of sufficient size for every home game, be it an on campus arena or full time at a major local arena. No switching between small on campus and larger off campus. Also besides SD St and maybe Marquette all of these schools are in towns where there is sweet FA to do if you don't go to the game.

Thanks, getting to this late, but yes this was the same data I had seen.

It’s crazy it’s taken this long to do that. We used to show up for other sports and teams would show up for our games when I was a student athlete, but it was done through the coaches or players of other teams.

St. John’s has hundreds of student and always has seats available at nearly every game.

That lacrosse crew was great Wednesday night. As I mentioned, my section (120) was near a few of the "unruly" groups of Providence fans, who were positioned towards the back end of those around me (and yes, I also saw that grown man with his 2 kids in Section 119, who literally was just standing for parts of the game with a glazed look on his face, for no reason, and causing all sorts of problems until vocal fans behind me started yelling at him and the ushers came over, which they had to do multiple times). The group was crickets the first half but started to get loud during the second half runs Prov had twice. I joked to the people I was sitting with that we should move that lacrosse group up to our section, since at my age and you know, having a real job and all, I wasn't going to get into dealing with the Prov trash.

I love seeing that.

I'm not a poster on the site but enjoy reading the threads......wanted to add my two cents to the attendance conversation.....

I just moved back to the east coast after 20 years in Southern California and picked a great year to move back and restart my season tickets!

Attended my first MSG game of the season Wednesday night against Providence and it was a blast. MSG is such a special place.

Pregame, I attended the 1870 Court event at Stout bar on 33rd Street. They had a private room downstairs with a cash bar and free food and everyone who attended received a long sleeve SJU shirt. All of this for a mere $10. I'm bad at estimating crowds but there were probably over 100 people there and everyone was incredibly friendly and fired up for the game. I'm pretty sure one of the owners of Stout is an alum, so it feels like Stout may be the official SJU hang out on game days.

I took my niece to the game with me who is a recent Georgetown grad and she was so impressed by the turnout at Stout and the energy at the Garden. She really missed that experience during her years at Georgetown.

The Tobin School is sponsoring the next event at Stout before the Villanova game and I encourage everyone to attend. In addition, if you need tickets to the game, you can buy a ticket through them for only $30. So for $40, you can get a ticket, tee shirt, food and a fun atmosphere. Not bad for NYC!

I know everyone would love to fill the Garden with only SJU fans but, we play in the middle of NYC, which is a magnet for alums from every school as well as being a great reason for people to visit from out of town. I have attended multiple events at SoFi Stadium in LA and there are always thousands of fans from the visiting team since people use it as a reason to visit LA. Rarely do people make a special trip to Omaha, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, etc.

Also, after our Villanova game, I read a thread on Twitter where a bunch of Nova fans were lamenting the lack of a home court advantage due to lack of student engagement, old people sitting on their hands, no good cheers, etc. So many of the same things mentioned on this thread and this was coming from fans of a team who has won 2 National Championships recently.

Lastly, I'm enjoying this season immensely and the games are a wonderful escape from our crazy world.....it looks like our season may end later than it has for many years and that's pretty cool......

I don’t believe you about another school’s fanbase having similar issues to ours. Only our fanbase sucks. 🤪 (note: post is sarcastic 😊)

I'm very biased but have been around a very long time. Cragg is just great and such a great fan and class act. He takes every communication seriously. When a new friend on here had a ticket billing problem I reached out to Cragg and he replied immediately. I love that his athletic department experience was at one of the premier athletic programs in the NCAA and he brought a lot of that with him here. He has become very close to Rick and the two are similar in being willing to go way above and beyond to lift this program to elite status in all ways.

The 1870 at Stouts was terrific. Plenty of room. Full of St. John’s fans Apps being passed around.

Great concept Not sure how many years ago it was started. Ive attended the 1870 at Carnesecca its ok in the tent. They used to have in Taffner A lot more room

Next Saturday will be the real test in terms of how we are drawing. Noon Saturday game before football starts and with school back in session. I’ve already arranged a group of 10 to be there. Let’s pack it out and be loud!
Way to go!
